I have an old wallet.dat that's either too old or corrupted to simply drop into bitcoin core and make work. It has been suggested that I try using pywallet to extract the keys so I can upload them to a new wallet, but I have no coding experience and have not ever used python before.   Ultimately, I need to get a nice idiots guide on what I need installed and what I need to type to extract the keys using OSX. Help appreciated. Thanks.

So far I have made it this far, but not sure where to go from here...
Mac OS X:
 1. Install MacPorts from http://www.macports.org/
 2. sudo port install python27 py27-twisted py27-pip py-bsddb python_select
 3. sudo port select --set python python27
 4. sudo easy_install ecdsa

Hi everyone.

A few years ago I gave my brother BTC for XMAS. He hasnt touched it since and was using Bitcoin QT at the time. We are looking to transfer the funds to a hardware wallet, but when getting him to upload his wallet.dat file, we ran into a snag. It seems he didn't do an actual back up of the wallet app, and instead, had a time machine back up of the computers hard drive made, and when he gained access, we grabbed the wallet.dat file from his bitcoin folder. When loading it into the app on my computer, the funds are coming up as 0. I checked the address on blockchain.info and the funds are still there.

Any suggestions? Can you make a usable backup via dragging and dropping the .dat file as opposed to backing it up manually?

Operating System: OSX 10.13.1
System Hardware Specs: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 and 50 GB free hard drive space.
Description of Problem: Bitcoin Core isnt loading wallet.dat file.

Mining is a tough game to get into, not only do you need the space (if you intend to mine BTC) but also need cheap power and at least 2k for a decent ASIC miner. If you are looking more into GPU mining rigs, even building one of these can run you a decent amount of money to make it worth it.  If I were you I would learn from my mistakes.  I got into Bitcoin in late 2012 and bought some coins, but decided I wanted to have some of them earn me more money (makes sense right?) long story short, I lost all the money I put into mining via cloud mining scams, ect, and I would have been way better off just buying and holding.  $500 a few years ago would be worth 12k+ right now, so my advice to you would be to invest in a secure storage device like a hardware wallet, and buy BTC and sit on it.  2018 is expected to have a lot of forks that you can in turn sell for more BTC (sort of like a dividend).  Best of luck.

Twitter has accounts and hash tags that follow users that follow them.  Loop up hashtags like #friendfollow #follow4follow #followfriend and accounts with friend follow in the name, some accounts post tweets that have these hashtags that say anyone who likes/retweets this tweet, so all you have to do is retweet, follow, and like a bunch of accounts and posts.  Best of luck.

Never store long term on an exchange.  Is it convenient? yes, especially with all the forks and whatnot.  But under no circumstances would I ever leave on an exchange.  Lots of new people here dont remember what it was like to lose money on Mt Gox, or even BTC-E, so I say it again, DO NOT STORE YOUR MONEY ON AN EXCHANGE.  Buy a hardware wallet, learn how to use it, and keep it in a safe place.  I suggest Ledgers Nano S, and right now they even have a deal for 21% off because of Black Friday.  Check it out.  https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s

I always suggest if you have a reasonable amount of money, anything over a few hundred dollars, to store via a hardware wallet.  Ledger, Trezor or Keepkey make great products, however I believe Ledger Nano S's are the best and most affordable option.  They also offer a great list of altcoin support and add new ones constantly and great Bitcoin hardfork support.  This week they are also offering 21% discount!  Check it out.

Do your research.  Learn about projects and find ones that have long term appeal, good developers, active community.  After that, pick an entry point, don't get swayed by emotion.  Once you are in, buy and hodl.  Don't try to swing trade, don't try to diversify profits in lesser known and less viable products, aim to keep the total number of tokens or coins as you started off with, store in a safe place, preferably a hardware wallet, and wait.  Obviously everyone has there preferences and opinions on the matter, but this is one I have used and has been working for me so far.

Anyone have any more resources on the project?

I currently use a hardware wallet, such as the Ledger Nano S which supports multiple currencies, and adds new ones on a regular basis.  Some of the currently supported currencies are: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash, Neo, and others.

If you are looking for a web wallet, I enjoy the interface and usability of Exodus.  Easy to use, great portfolio interface, lots of supported currencies.
