Yes, it is 10 yrs. But hey I'm probably the only Donator with zero merit and newbie status. So go figure. Things have changed around here.  OK, back to sleep for a few years.  Cheesy

Re: Donation Titles... 50 and 10BTC

One of the reasons for not lowering the entry amounts to gain VIP and Donator status, is stated to be that it is an unfair action to lower the price according to the increased fiat value.

I wonder how you as donator would experience a scenario where the amounts will indeed get lowered ~ would you be bothered in all honesty?

Some will care and some likely wont, but it's a moot point because theymos has said several times he wont change or lower the current ranks. I think some additional donator ranks (with different titles and perks) should be added though (as I have mentioned numerous times before). Prices should be pegged to fiat to prevent what happened with the current ones. Countless people have shown interest in donating if only the price was lower and I think additional ranks with different names wont displease any of the current donators so I think this is something we should strongly consider. As I mentioned before, if we allow some of the perks to have include a bigger signature that will put a stop to a lot of account sales as well because people can just donate to the forum instead of giving the money to a possibly shady black market account seller.

I like your ideas hilariousetec. How about "contributor"?

I thought I would share with new beginners of how Bitcoins started Smiley

Really interesting!

Pretty accurate article. As long as you are going to use the wayback machine. Here is the pizza.

Good question. For me it is just a title not a technical reputation. What I do like about it, is that it shows I stepped up early on to support this website financially. I doubt that will ever be required again. So yes, I do like the fact that I can indicate I was an early supporter and would not want to lose that significance in the title.

At the risk of taking your post seriously, there is some very interesting work going on with algorands (zk-SNARKS)

Is it intended that the donation titles are $137,500.00 USD and $27,500.00 USD?

I mean... seems slightly excessive lol...

Time to update these to something more realistic? IDK who in their right mind would pay that. Are people still setting these up in 2017?

Nope.

As mentioned, we did it back in the day to pay for some much needed updates per theymos suggestion. Very few stepped up actually. Why would a title even matter? It is ancient history.

It IS that easy to create a token.

Unless the token represents something of value, you are out of luck.

It's funny how everyone here that's suggesting to ban signature campaigns are all enrolled in them.

Because we all love money obviously. What else do you think we are posting here for? Chit chat?  Grin I wonder what will happen when the business for the more industrialized posters dries up. World famine and mass exodus from the forum?
Geez. I dunno. Hopefully someone only contributes when they have something technically useful to say. I'm over it.

i agree to ban the signature campaign if their rules are explicitly encouraging spamming and trash posts. however, some of the people really need to rely on  certain works in order to make their own lives. some of the signature campaign operators have been allying to deal with those spams IIRC.
Ban all sig campaigns. I was surprised to come back after all of these years and realize it was a "thing". It is noise and is a long stretch from the original intent of this forum.

Re: High school dropout who invested in bitcoin is now a millionaire at 18

Smart (and lucky) guy!

In hindsight, something I've regretted a fair bit was not dropping out of high school. I was bored out of my mind, wasted 9+ hours each school day, ended up sleep-deprived a lot of the time in order to both avoid failing and do the other stuff that I wanted to do, and in the end I didn't get anything out of it. It was a big waste. I should've dropped out ASAP, gotten a GED, and gone to a university several years earlier if possible. Or just abandoned the traditional education system entirely. (University is a much better and more useful experience, though probably still not the optimal use of time/money.)

I'm not saying that people should forget about developing useful skills and instead pin all of their hopes on making money off of insanely risky investments. That's not a good plan at all. But no matter your future goals, I think that any form of schooling that requires 8+ hours of classtime+busywork per day is a criminal waste of time.
Droppped out of a Ph.D. and did what was in front of me with BTC. No regrets. You are correct.

Re: Are there people here from 2013 who are not millionaires now?
by
physicist

as i joined here the BTC was around 10 USD, bitcoin was a game for nerds.
We build our own economy and felt like crypto pirates, we invested in ponzi schemes (Pirate *haha*) and thought that we are the kings of the world because we had unbelievable interests.
We used Marketplaces who brougt us into difficulties or were closed by governance or frozen by banks or marketplaces who losed our coins (Mt. Gox).

We learnd it by the Hard Way, spended a lot of BTCs for nonsense because it was cool to pay with BTC or lost them because we were to stupid to follow some simple rules.

As the price was 60 USD i dropped all coins a had, because i cant imagine that it gets higher.
I lost more then 20-30 BTC with Scam, of course if i keept all the btc i had i would now be a millionair.

Re: Window blind solar panels

To the rest of you following this warped thread: My technical take on the "energy windows" is unfortunately posted between this kerfuffle between MachineZero and smutboy420 about anthropogenic GHGs. So it appears I am engaged in that debate. I am not and won't waste the time in this forum. However, SB420 commits an error in logic so I'm gonna just speak to that.

The argument is of the form:
All A are B
C is not A
Therefore C is not B

For example:

All poisons are dangerous to humans
Angry bears are not poisonous
Therefore angry bears are not dangerous.

Ah yeah, but they are dangerous for other reasons.  Roll Eyes

Re: Window blind solar panels

Yes, but one does not need to maximize electrical generation at the point of use. Just because a building has many windows does not mean they are an ideal location. The "trick" with electrical distribution is to understand that losses are proportional to the current^2*resistance. Since power is volts * current, one transmits power at extremely high voltages and lower current. A typical 765kV high tension line transmits 1000MW of power over 160km with less than 1% loss. Truly remarkable. So put the panels out in the desert/away from the city and transport it in.
