Re: [ANN][CRF] Coin Revival Foundation! ★ COIN REVOLUTION ★ VOTING STARTED!

I wouldn't consider GPUcoin dead as such. It has active dev's it just needs a marketing push. I'd suggest thats its a LARGE project and requires almost full time dedication. Maybe not the sort of coin you guys are looking for.

It would work if that dedicated team would cooperate with the foundation. I will post in their thread to ask if they really need a takeover.
If they have active dev they only need some help on other parts, not development, like 66Coin otherwise! And we're #2 on the voting list!
Anyway totally agree with talking with their developer directly!

What do you mean pikimunga? Are you saying that 66coin is a better fit? (I'm sorry, but I am not sure I understand your first sentence).

What is it that you like about 66coin? I have never heard of it before -- why do you think it would be a good fit? Maybe you can get some converts to your cause if you tell us all why it is so good!

I agree with you (if I understand correctly) and Jonesd on GPU Coin about talking with the developer. If the coin has an active team, then I don't really understand why they would be on the list. Every coin needs a "marketing push", as esotericism put it. It is entirely possible that I may be missing the exact goals of the Coin Revival Foundation, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but that doesn't seem to be a perfect fit. It can be nuanced, but there is a danger that a coin with an active developer could use this group as a source for dumping their coins on a new crop of people. I realize that, depending on the situation, that is true with all "dead" coins as every holder has been stuck for a long time. But, it seems to me a coin that has been abandoned would have a much more enthusiastic crowd of coin holders, than one that is still being actively attended to by developers. The latter holders, I would think, will just use any upside to get out as their belief in the coin has soured. An abandoned coin tends to have holders that are more bitter about the developers than the coin itself.

Of course, as I mentioned, there are nuances involved and each situation is different. It sounds like Jonesd is handling it correctly by contacting the developers directly.

But, regardless of how that works out, I would certainly like to hear more about all the candidates, including GPU and 66 Coin. Let the best coin win!
I didn't say any is a better fit than another one! I just said they may be in the same situation as 66 Coin (which has a developer but that is not enough, we have miners, pools and even are on 3 exchanges at the moment, used to be cryptorush as well but... oh, well...). At any rate without something useful to do with the coin interest in it dies in time and the value will continuously drop, as soon as there is something to use them for (other than selling for BTC) they start to circulate both ways and should be able to self-sustain!
ANNOUNCEMENT

After voting we will still have to see if the people from GPUcoin really want this takeover and cooperate with us. If not, it will logically fall of the list.

I have to say, that our foundation is about patching up deserted coins, so if there is nothing to patch up with GPUcoin, we will move on to the number 2 coin quickly anyway Smiley
wow... gpucoin a non dead coin, is winning the vote...
This is a bit deceiving to say the least. This coin isn't dying because of lack of manpower, but essentially because it doesn't interest anybody except those who hold large bag of gpuc.
I thought the foundation would concentrate on more special coin (meaning other than scrypt and scrypt-n)
Reviving a coin means more than just patching the wallet, if it were just patching the wallet there would not be need for a foundation for this.
You have to get new members involved and increase interest in the coin to the point it can start having it's own life (like getting it accepted at a shop). This way the price will vary in time in both directions thus giving the coin an oscillating value or "pulse" if you will. If the only thing you can do with a coin is sell it for BTC than it's a dead coin the way I see it because the price will only go 1 way and that's down... and it needs reviving (a pulse).
No amount of wallet patching will get a coin a reason for existing, once a coin has a shop which accepts I think it can go on with it's own life and we can move to the next one... if it dies again maybe that the coin was not good all along.
This is the way I see things, I may be wrong though, but I stand by my vision that fixing the wallet alone is not enough to call a coin revived!

Edit: Oh, and if you think patching is enough, you are wrong, I tried just patching with 66 Coin... so here's a bit of history...
66 Coin used to be just fine and going pretty well... difficulty was going up and down, prices were around 15 BTC/66 and things were fine, than, I think it got added to a multipool and the difficulty spiked hugely (tens of times) up to a point nobody wanted to mine it anymore, Somebody still did... once I saw block were being found I joined the effort and dropped the difficulty lower... but at this point the network was almost dead... 2 pools dropped out, the other one was not mining, I think we were just 2, maybe 3 people in the whole network solo-mining each. Prices also dropped because I guess the multipoolers sold the coins they mined!
I patched the wallet and put up the update because the original developers abandoned it... I added KGW to it so this would not happen anymore, I also continued to patch the coin and add stuff to it but prices are continuing to drop because although there were hundreds, possibly thousands of miners originally for this coin after such a long period of inactivity nobody wanted to trust it anymore.
I think this is very likely to happen with other coins as well, so as long as there's no real purpose for the coin just patching it will not revive it, will just make it's coma stage last longer!

currently supporting the comeback of volt.
im using osx and the link to the wallet update is invalid.  any help in getting synced would be appreciated, currently stuck on block 87836.......
Mac Version available here:
https://github.com/TeamVOLT/ElectricVOLT/releases/download/v1.2.0.0-osx-beta/Electric-Qt-osx-v1.2.0.0-beta.dmg
I'll prepare a more recent blockchain download and link here shortly.
Blockchain available here:
https://github.com/TeamVOLT/ElectricVOLT/releases/tag/ElectricBlockchain151696.zip
Ensure you have adequate backups before trying this.
I get an incorrect database error, it seems your database/log files are needed as well in that zip, trying to rebuild from scratch dies with incorrect proof of work and remains stuck at block 479
I should mention that I built from source and still seem to get version 1.1 (presumably '"version" : 1010000' is the actual version string) .... please post latest sources on github as well!

We have quite a strong technical team, but Panda probably requires massive marketing and PR to work. Maybe with more experience, indeed Smiley
Agree, we're not even close to having that much power

- Already a direct (superior) competitor with Pandacoin (PND)
o Started off as a clone yes, but with an active development team, PND is rapidly evolving to rebrand and incorporate new technologies and development to ensure its survival and usage. It has a leg up on Wolong's scum coin already by far with a consistently 400+ mhs and ever growing multipool and upcoming developments this week by inplementing either POS or merged mining with DOGE to remain asic resistant. Market price and volume reflects this superiority very clearly.
o You call it a clone when it started off, but it was a damn superior clone when it started off with 0 IPO and 0% premine
o Has the backing of 4chan as the foundation of a community.

In the end it was a wise move for the foundation head to disqualify PANDA, as you've said yourself, they should take on a 'medium-sized' disaster coin project to drum up a good story instead of trying to climb bloody Mount Everest solo without any gear or supplies.
Agree with the last part, but even though PND may have come as a replacement for PANDA it is essentially a different coin with possibly a huge part of different users, I don't think you should be using that as an argument against it! As for the pre-mine, you can lock the remaining funds out or send them into oblivion with the first wallet update you release, by making an exception for 1 transaction in the block you fork the chain at! Alternatively you could re-launch with a new genesis block containing all older public keys and balances except the pre-mine ... and whatever wolong stole!

It was only proposed by one person, so I will add that it's unlikely (otherwise I have to reset the whole vote)
Or you could just announce that it's disqualified without resetting the vote... anyway I agree that it's unlikely it will be in the first 3.although it currently kind of is...

Hmm, with this new info I think PANDA should be crossed off the list as it does not even come close to meeting the criteria for the foundation!

I'm eagerly awaiting for a decision which coin should we focus our efforts on first!
I think that should be the next step of this foundation, to successfully revive 1 coin proving that we're worth our name!
Than people will take us much more seriously and we can easier succeed later!

Please consider adding 66 coin, not really dead but I've been trying to revive the comunity for the past 6 weeks, we have been screwed by cryptorush twice (we were listed there), price was on the rise and so was network hashrate, now some of us have coins stuck there, we'll see if they get restored! Interest is already on the rise and hashrate is slowly getting restored, development active (I have taken development over a while ago, after seeing that the coin was abandoned), we're running polls, giveaways, had a new forum and a new exchange added in just the past week!
What we need help with is marketing, advertising and getting accepted as a payment method somewhere!

That's an interesting coin, indeed. Would you be willing to contribute to the foundation in general with your revival skills? Your coin might be one of the upcoming coins selected. Do you have ownership of the github?
Sorry for late reply, was a busy day yesterday for me, yes I have ownership of the new github (most people already know to get it from there). I also got shared privileges on facebook from a member of the community and the password to their twitter, but the website is out of my control and has not been updated in months. I also have moderator privileges on new forum and cryptocointalk!
I would help with other coins especially if someone else took some of the burden of me, it's a lot to maintain all those forums and twitter and facebook and to send a mail/private message to every service we have everytime I make an update to the wallet! I'd prefer to be on the code writing part of things and let the social stuff to be handled by someone else!

It would be great if we could have a network to let things like that run much smoother indeed. Also things like github and coin websites would be much easier if we would work together. Smiley

What are your specific skills?
C/C++, I know some php but totally hate working with it, I can fix coins, update wallets and implement new features. But the social side of things is killing me.
I also have a server rented where I run my pool and may get additional ones if needed to host websites, but I will not administer the sites, don't have the time for it and I'm really slow on that part!

Totally agree that there should be more done than changing the algorithm, however please try to also get involved, yes, I did offer to become the maintainer of this coin, but I also happen to have a life and can't dedicate it completely to this coin.
If you really want this coin to go somewhere we have to join efforts, I can't be expected to be doing everything alone!
I have started new threads and some giveaways (for now from my own mined 66, hope menzo will give me some of the premine for giveaways) in hopes of increasing the price!
New forum is here http://coinstack.org/index.php?board=23.0 please post there from now on!

great work man!!!
Thanks, just as a side-note I really hate how php-mpos is written, it's horribly slow and doesn't use any kind of transactions whatsoever when working with the database, like it should.
Also uses float way too much and can cause lots of rounding errors.
If I end up having some time I was thinking of rewriting huge parts of it, at least to use innodb as storage engine, relations between tables and transactions to make it faster and safer (if you don't commit and script crashes everything gets rolled back automatically and you don't have to worry about partial updates, took me almost a full day to recover from one of those).

Everything seems to be working fine, as promised here is the mpos patch
Upgrade instructions:
  • backup your database in case something goes wrong, shouldn't but it's a good idea!
  • stop your cron scripts and wait for them to actually stop!
  • patch mpos
  • modify database parameters in scripts/sqlchanges.php
  • run 'php sqlchanges.php' and wait for it to complete (it may take a while)
  • manually run 'cronjobs/findblocks.php' (use -f if necessary - check logs after) and wait for it to finish
  • manually run 'cronjobs/proportional_payout.php' (use -f if necessary - check logs after) - if you use a different payment system you can change the code according to the modifications in proportional_payouts.php in the patch, should be relatively simple)
  • after the above jobs complete manually do a run of 'cronjobs/run-crons.sh' and wait for it to complete
  • re-enable your cron jobs, upgrade finished

UPDATE FINISHED:
https://dig.coinage.ro is back up! Due to me working on scripts I disabled automatic payments until I made sure everything is ok, you have to manually set up your automatic payments again for them to work.
You can withdraw your mined coins anytime!
All blocks currently show a payout of only 0.000066 but this is only on the interface side, bonus blocks are taken into account and you can see the bonuses as a second payment for the same block number in transactions!

You can start mining again, after I assure mining doesn't cause new issues I will post the patch for other pools to upgrade as well!
Bonus blocks work fine: sample here http://dig.coinage.ro/index.php?page=statistics&action=round&height=87881 (yes that is a single user although it shows up as anonymous)!

great news, what will be with few days of mining when you said coins would be withdrawn to wallets?
All payouts are retroactively calculated, I'm currently just making a minor adjustment because due to a mistake I made in my scripts some of the bonus blocks were calculated twice and I would end up paying more than the pool has!
You can see partial progress on my pool https://dig.coinage.ro/index.php?page=statistics&action=blocks where it's actually at the last block found by the pool.
Bonuses are not show in the Amount field yet but that will be fixed soon as well!
Unfortunately php and mysql work very slowly together to calculate the payments everyone will be getting so it takes a lot of time to update for so many blocks!

UPDATE: I think I've finished, waiting for pool to retroactively calculate all payouts (will take at least 1 hour... took 1 on my pc and it's better than the server)

So, how's this coin doing?
Getting back on track soon, almost done with the mpos changes!

Is there a way to mine this coin still? All pools seem to be in maintenance mode.
Pools will be back very soon, fix is ready, just a few minor adjustments need to be made.
Also you can solo-mine to your wallet directly, wallets work perfectly!
