Re: Children of same-sex couples are happier and healthier than peers, research show
by

Interesting. Would like to see more studies. In the US at least, half of all pregnancies are not planned. I would imagine that most children in same sex parent families required planning. Children planned for are children wanted. I wonder if this might account for some of the difference

I agree. I would assume same-sex couples (and in fact all couples who adopt or otherwise try hard to become parents) are likely to have put a higher amount of planning and organisation into their child's upbringing than people who can have children 'by accident'. Couples who adopt are also more likely to be relatively wealthy / middle class, both of which have been shown to improve a child's wellbeing.

Then again, the study may account for these factors. I can't be fucked to read it though Cheesy.

I would say the same. To me, it seems that it's the degree of determination to have a child that really matters, not sexual preferencies/gender identities of the parents. If there was common for same-sex couples to have unplanned children, I'm not sure if the results would be the same.

the man to the right of Obama - not sure, but couldn't it be David Cameron, UK Prime Minister?

The pic was based on another pic, which was taken during D Day anniversary. So it could be Cameron, but I don't think he is partially bald headed. Plus, he is much taller.

good remarks.
so I've done some searching and it seems that the figure to the Obama's right is Spanish king Juan Carlos

So, who decided it was illegal anyway? On what grounds? Why? In the normal world everything is legal until the necessary procedure is taken to make it illegal - not the other way around. That would make everything illegal in the US until "someone" decided it was legal....... Tongue

good point.

a step towards imposing a tax, maybe?  Wink

I recognize Obama there not sure who the other two were besides Putin
Femen girls provide a service lol.

On the left, it is François Hollande, the president of France. Don't know who is the guy on the right of Obama. As I have posted earlier, these radical feminist groups such as Femen and Pussy Riot are just a bunch of attention seeking whores.

I can't find the link now but I read a confession of a former member of this group describing practices used at their training - and it looked anything but liberty fighters. and I remember her saying that only good-looking women are chosen for "public appearances". oh, how feministic it is...  Cheesy

Re: Events that changed the world...

although not a single event, for the 19th century I would add emergence of nationalism in the Western world in the modern sense of the term, i.e. the strong feeling of identity binding together communities of peopl,e surpassing social, confessional or other differences among them. there were many "nationalistic" notions before modern period but there were to some extent always dependent on some special conditions and thus limited to special group of society... but since the 19th century nattionalism became a "mass movement" and has influenced the course of history sinbce. it seems to me that nowadays people (in Europe at least) can barely view the world without taking it into account.

Re: Favorite political figure?
by

Some of the figures mentioned above were truly remarkable, both as military leaders and/or political thinkers... but I've noriced a lack of figures from the Middle Ages in this thread - and I think there were also medieval politicians worth mentioning.
So I would go for Charlemagne - he re-introduced the idea of imperial power in the West. He was also a great military leader who united vast ethnically and culturally different areas of Western Europe under one rule (although some of his decisions might well be disputed) and managed to rule them as peacefully as it was possible at his time (with Saxons being major exception). And he had sort of intelectual interests as well - he sponsored an important cultural revival after dark centuries whereby helping to preserve and enrich ancient legacy for the whole Western civilization.

Another interesting medieval figure was emperor Frederick II in the 13th century, I think - he managed to oppose the pope, instead of leading a crusade he made peace with his Saracen adversaries that provided Christian pilgrims with free access to the Holy land, and as a Sicilian king he maintained religious tolerance (Christians, Muslims and Jews living in hramony in Sicily Wink ) for the benefit of his kingdom. And at time when literacy was still not perfectly common among Western ruling elites, he not even could read and spoke six languages - he also wrote book (on falconry) Smiley

Umberto Eco - The Name of the Rose, Foucault's Pendulum (much better than any of Dan Brown's works I think, with quite different message)
Orhan Pamuk - My name is Red
Fyodor Dostoevsky - Notes from Underground
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - Citadelle, The Little Prince
Ernest Hemingway - For whom the bell tolls

just to name a few Wink
