Re: Official FutureBit Apollo BTC Software/Image and Support thread

Hi All,
I'm new to this community, I've just received my Founder Apollo II.
I'm trying to sync the node. It's going very slow.
After 24hrs I'm still at half chain (490,225/836.701)
It shows 10/32 connections.

Am I doing something wrong?
I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you

Tk

Hey TK - you need to allow 8333 to the LAN IP of your node from the internet. Check your firewall settings.

Super excited about these units! I did have three questions:
  • Do these units come with a warranty in case of unlikely failure?
  • How many of the "standard" units can be connected to a "full" version?
  • Does this support SHA256asicboost?

thanks!

John - do you ship these to shitcoiners? :/

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend, I am new to setting up a device like this and the pool gives me two options for sha256. Even after a few google searches I still don’t really understand what asciboost is. I only want to mine Bitcoin (and I thought having a node would be cool), so I am guessing that means I should select sha256 as my algorithm…

Hey - yeah, ASICBoost bug was corrected in Bitcoin with the implementation of Segwit - Only shitcoins BCASH and BSV still suffer from this exploit which was kept in the protocol due to Bitmain's means to exploit it for mining profit (Jihad Wu being one of the supporters of the BCASH fork).

Anyway, it was a tongue-in-cheek comment, but you really shouldn't be supporting those forked shitcoins with these fine pieces of American engineering.

You really shouldn't be supporting pools that throw hash at those coins either. Try SlushPool.

r00tdude

Oh I had no idea. Thank you for this information. It’s good to know!

I will definitely check out SlushPool instead, sounds like a better route.

Thanks!

Rock on!

I have a problem, I paid for two apollo-btc units , (batch one), and only one arrived. Since then I have sent all the documentation requested, received an apology, and assurance that the missing items were to mailed out, but after three weeks now nothing, not even a response to my recent inquiries about the status of my unfulfilled order. Its only about $350 in BTC but the reputation of the company is in my mind very bad. Its one thing to make a mistake and fix it, but to ignore my email inquiries into my paid order is not something a reputable establishment can or should survive. At best the over priced bug ridden device billed as an American company achievement is now starting to look like more of a disgrace. Just wondering who else has similar problems before I get banned from posting.

As a customer of FutureBit before it was FutureBit, I can tell you that your experience is certainly not indicative of the performance of John's company over these many years from the original Moonlander through this rig: I can also say that you can complain publicly until the cows come home, and I'd still gladly buy every unit John would make available to me.

You make yourself look bad by making truly unfounded complaints like these publicly (bug ridden/overpriced) - disputes like this are always best handled privately between the two parties.

If you don't want your rigs, sell them to me for the full price you paid for them and forget you ever posted in this thread. I'm available by PM here.

My partner and I are going to be making mining investments this year. We are looking to buy already hosted rigs/farms that are functional and productive. Script/SHA rigs/GPU rigs... We're buying all rigs and algos. For any substantial purchases I will travel to inspect equipment and review hosting facilities and agreements. PM me here, and I'll be in touch.

Thanks!

Assuming jstefanop et. al. get it running on the Orange Pi Zero, the biggest limitation is the storage space; my node is currently using 24G to store the blockchain, so you'll need a sizable SD card.

It could be more practical to store the blockchain on some USB flash stick since there's an USB port available anyway. That way the SD card size wouldn't matter that much and updating the firmware by fully erasing the card content wouldn't reset the blockchain back to zero (or to some other older snapshot the firmware possibly provides).

Yea this is the main issue we are still trying to figure out with the full node (other than the memory limitations we are still working through). We still want to make it that the whole node runs on the current hardware with nothing extra, but based on how bad the node wears down SD cards we might need to provide an external USB drive solution for better reliability.

Almost done with getting Batch 2 out the door, and my full attention will turn to this...

So pleased to hear that the full node is in the works following the Batch 2 being on their way. Been waiting what seems like ages for this - I want to solo mine my Apollos from now on and mining against a node on the rig is the best scenario (I had considered a VM on my NAS, but I like the thought of this better).

FWIW and for those interested, I was one of the guys running L3's until last week, and with the price action on LTC, I decided to shut down 75% of my capacity and run only my Apollos from here on out. It hurt, but LTC is losing ground immensely and without privacy solution ready for mainnet, I don't think LTC is going to gain ground on BTC.

With the halving and price slumping, I foresee an immediate 25% reduction in hashrate, and 50% over the next six months, unless Charlie Lee pulls mimblewimble out of his hat.

Just gonna leave this here...  Grin

No, they'll not pay for themselves for a year or two (though I suspect that during the bull run I feel in my bones, the coins they mined will be worth double what I paid for these gems), but it's always nice to see that they can catch blocks against the biggest mining farms anywhere.

Kudos to you jstef!

Not sure if this helps anyone make a decision - but these are super high quality rigs developed by a super high quality guy who is responsible for the Moonlander, Moonlander 2 and now this rig... Even with beta version 0.0.1 of the mining software based on Minera, it's super stable - I have quite a few of them myself, and they run without interruption for weeks at a time. Software is in active development.

Yes, given you can get dumpster rate on L3's for lots less per MH, but that Chinese garbage doesn't hold a candle to impression you'll get with a few of these on your desk. Try that with an L3.

Anyway, if you have any questions from someone who has owned all of JStef's rigs and this one in particular, drop me a PM. Happy to help.

Peace,
r00t

Going and try to get the image update out tomorrow or tuesday so there is a least a built in protection for rare edge cases like this.

when will we have the next release?

thks.

Sorry we had to do a kernel upgrade to the base system get some things we needed, which broke other stuff and this took way longer than planned. Image is currently done, just doing testing over the weekend and should be out on monday.

Hey JStef - do you have a changelog available so we can appreciate the work you've done beforehand?

[WTS] [WTT] PandaMiner B3+ with OEM PSU 8x RX480 GPUs
by
r00tdude
on 29/12/2018, 17:44:49 UTC
Hey Guys -

I'm taking offers on my PandaMiner (for those who don't know, it's a fully integrated Windows 10 machine with 8 RX480s inside a 4U enclosure for easy, non-messy GPU mining. Since GPU coins are pretty much the only positive ROI coins at the moment, I thought it might be worth quite a bit and I don't see any others for sale on eBay or here - meaning those that have 'em are mining 'em. I don't have any more Kwh left in my cage for this one, so it's sitting unused at the moment. Make me an offer via PM please. Will accept trades as well for just about anything (laptops, cell phones, etc.).

Peace,
r00t
