yeah, it shuts down and reboots constantly. I can't believe my luck that the exact same problem happened in 3 exact same units. I can't help but think if there was anything I could have damaged while taking the boards out and putting it back in but can't think of anything.

I've tried all of that already. Fan speeds look ok because I can see the fan ramping up when it's overheating and then ramping down when the miner auto reboots.
I reset it to default and reinstalled the latest firmware too. It was running fine for last 3 months. In fact, I opened to clean it because past few days it was running into 80s. Now I frikking regret opening it. Just my luck! Wondering if Bitmain will help me troubleshoot it because it's no longer under warranty and I don't want to spend money to fix it. lol!

Yes, honestly last time I opened it, it wasn't this dusty!  Sad

After I brushed the dirt off, I used a blower to blow off any residual dust. Could you please recommend me a contact cleaner spray? Is this ok https://www.amazon.com/WD-40-Specialist-Electrical-Contact-STRAW-SPRAYS/dp/B00CMT9TFY/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1520721398&sr=1-1-fkmr3&keywords=PCB+contact+cleaner+spray ?

Thanks!

that product is perfect...doesn't have to be a premium brand contact cleaner, maybe your local electrical supply store stocks a cheaper brand(just check labeling and make sure it states for PCB boards)  good luck

So, I used the contact cleaner to clean all the boards and plugged it back in. In less than 2 minutes of the ASIC booting, all boards were over 100c!! I am sure I didn't damage the cards while handling. Do you think using compressed air might have damaged some temperature sensor on board? Please help me!

While I'm waiting for the contact cleaner to be delivered, do you think it might have anything to do with the order in which I put the cards back?

I mean, does it matter if I put each hashboard in the same slot I took it out from?

I forgot this name like a filter for aircons or you can make a homemade net or a piece of paper which air can go though this paper should be fine that does not break or torn apart got this Idea from a posthere from bitcointalk.org too did not get the chance to save it if you understand my explanation when you buy a filter you put it on the exos of the miner. You dont need to clean a lot of you tried the idea that I got.

Sorry if wrong terms are used I am not officially a miner just want to know about miner step by step until I bought a miner for myself.

I got a problem linking the link here on bitcointalk.org so I would suggest search on Google aircoin filter and miner dust filter.

thanks, I'll search for a suitable filter that I can use.

Antminer D3 overheating AFTER cleaning the hashboard and removing the dust
by

Hi all,

so, all of my D3 units have been overheating for a while (85+) and some of the chips would often turn x.

I thought maybe it has sucked in too much dust so I opened them and it looked like it could use some cleaning (see image).

Unfortunately, after cleaning, the temperature is shooting up even higher and the ASIC is constantly rebooting, probably as a safety measure.

The fan speeds look ok and I can hear them ramping up to bring down the temperature till it gets too hot and the ASIC reboots.

Any idea what went wrong? I opened and cleaned my S9 and A3 too and they are indeed running few degrees lower than before! How come only the D3 units were screwed so bad? (see image)

Can I directly flash my D3 unit to the latest mod v1.12 :: 10/12 (https://mega.nz/#!ylJX0LCQ!8JWryI0jDhgMvPdH2mrOvybkXCtrpYtQpxu0akdxU1s) ?

Or is there any intermediate mod that I need to upgrade to first?

Thanks!

You can do it directly. Your writing a new image to flash, it's not a file based upgrade.

Thank you!

Re: Whining noise from S9 fan?
by

on 27/12/2017, 20:03:13 UTC
The conversation drifted towards another issue that I'm not primarily concerned about. It's not the noise but the uneven nature of the sound which is bothering me. My mistake, let me add more to it. The fan is constantly ramping up and down with a strange whistling noise that my D3 units don't make. I also have some more information to add to it which might help. I found out when is the fan making the noise.

Please take a look at the attached image:

https://imgur.com/a/cyANY

You see 3 'yellow' columns which signify the duration for which my S9 was rented on miningrigsrental.com

From the right, the highly fluctuating hashrate graph is when the S9 is being noisy. At this point, all the hashborads are under 78c. During the rented duration when you don't see the fluctuation in the graph, the S9 is running smoothly.

There's nothing I'm doing from my end that might cause this uneven hashrate.

My understanding is that a neutral air pressure inside the cabinet would take care of overheating. Air intakes and exhaust will have to be channeled through foam lined fins in order to absorb the noise. At least that's the concept I see most commonly in designs of other people. Or perhaps, something like this :

ok, so here's the thing. I saw a post somewhere (reddit or bitcointalk) where someone had mentioned that it's due to a much slower intake fan that the miner makes the whistling sound. Then they talked about replacing the fan with a faster/silent model which reduced the whistling effect. Has anyone else seen this post? or if you can recommend me the fan I can upgrade to?

thanks!

Whining noise from S9 fan?
by

on 26/12/2017, 01:02:29 UTC
My S9 fan has a strange whining/whistling noise. Is it normal or is it just my unit? The temperature of each hashing board it well under 75c but my fan ramps up a lot quite often. Any suggestions? Thanks!

One of my D3's will only load the main page (with nothing on it) and won't let me go to any other pages to reboot or flash, etc. I tried the reset with a paperclip, but no go. Any ideas? Thank you

I had the same problem but I tried multiple reset attempts and it worked eventually. In short, turn D3 on - let it completely boot (2-3 minutes) - press reset for 10 seconds - fault light starts blinking - reboot

If the fault light doesn't start blinking, try again.

best of luck

Powering case fans for a noise reducing enclosure
by
rageprone
on 11/12/2017, 07:28:36 UTC
Hi all!

I'm trying to build a noise reduction enclosure for housing 4 units of D3 and 1 unit of S9. I want to go with a push/pull format for the enclosure using 5 x 120mm case fans for each side. Since there's no motherboard, how do I power these case fans? Can I use some kind of USB adapter to power the fans?  I can't control the fan speed either but that's another problem for another day. Any feedback would be much appreciated!!
