Re: Has all the forum staff quit? My reports to moderator = unaddressed for weeks.

It's a public agreement, terms stated in public, terms violated in public. Absolutely no wiggle room out of it. Especially when the violator quoted the exact rule they violated.
so you think quoting something is more important than explicitly confirming you agree to it? are you trolling? did you mean to post this 2 days ago on the 1st of April?

does anybody here believe an "implicit agreement" because of a local rule is an agreement to full extend? just curious

April 02, 2018, 14:12:13 on my screen.

Electronically quoting a contract of auction terms & replying underneath it when specifically, highlighted-ly, prohibited from do so, serves the same function as signing your name at the bottom of a contract IRL.

sure, just because you say so  Roll Eyes

I'd be interested to know if anyone else agrees with you on that

There's already implicit agreement in place that the ban be executed, feigned illiteracy/dyslexia aside
first you need to establish a local rule is an agreement to full extend. I don't think it is unless the other party explicitly confirms he agrees. implicit agreements or contracts aren't necessary valid, explicit ones are as long as they're not against the law (or forum rules I guess)

The moderator has no legitimate reason to reject a binding agreement between me & my rule violators.
he has no reason to enforce private agreements. I'd bet most moderators wouldn't ban me even if I explicitly agreed to be banned if I post somewhere, unless I break some forum rules
a moderator's job is to enforce the forum's rules, not private agreements

26.
Those were mostly replaced by self-moderated topics, but local rules can be enforced at the moderator's discretion.

banning someone just for breaking a local rule would be absurd. you can't demand a moderator to enforce that if he doesn't agree

Re: Isn't it time to introduce 2FA to enhance user account security ?
by

2fa is enabled in essence because when someone tries to hack and take access of your account you can lock it via the link in the email you get if it wasn't you. The issue is is that most people complaining in Meta are waiting for their accounts to be restored to them by an admin which isn't really happening. Better 2fa options will be available on the new forum but the email lock is probably as good as we're going to get on this one.
when exactly is the email sent? what is defined as "tries to hack"? do you mean when the password is changed?
it's not really 2fa because if someone else has the password they can login with just that

I insist proper 2fa should be implemented. it seems simple https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2859085.0

someone said it could brake things (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2859085.msg29944712#msg29944712) but I don't think that's very likely. at least it should be tried in a test version (I guess there's a private test version of this forum where things are tested before going live?)

Re: 2fa with a simple $20 plugin?

my question remains, I don't see a reason why it's not worth spending $15 or $20 to implement 2fa on this current forum

It's probably just that little bit of money, plus a LOT OF PROGRAMMING TIME.

Theymos has modded this forum considerably.  That's why it's such an old version of SMF - he can't upgrade it anymore.

A "simple" thing like 2FA could break a dozen mods he has made....

that makes sense if that's the case. but has that been tested?
adding 2fa would be very important. it's definitely worth trying the plugin and checking if it really breaks something. there must be a dev/test installation of the forum I guess

is there any reason why $15 or $20 shouldn't be spent to add 2-factor authentication to this forum?
There will be more likely a new forum software added later on. Theymos posted it somewere on meta thread.
yes I know. it's being discussed since 4 years ago here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
I don't think it will be ready this year or even the next one

why is it difficult to integrate? maybe it was but now I see there's a plugin for that:

Re: Get Donator status by donating 10 BTC
by
rapsaodan84
on 01/02/2018, 15:24:22 UTC
That is completely illogical.  With that logic a pizza would still be 10,000 BTC because it would be 'unfair' to the guy who bought a pizza for that much, when that was the price of a pizza at the time.

Deflation is a thing, and I would enjoy hearing the opinion of a donor who genuinely believes that their donation of $50 in 2012 is equivalent to someone donating over $100k today.

Agreed. Great logical example Smiley

I think getting donor status is not on anyones mind any more. Just not worth it and nothing to gain.

it makes sense only if "donator" is no longer seen really as "donator" but "old user" or "bitcoin pioneer"
it differentiate users who were here soon enough so that 10 btc were worth 1 month of hosting

Just for the record, the 10 BTC donation was not an arbitrary number, but meant to be more or less equivalent to 1 month of hosting.
If anything, something like today's equivalent to 1 month of hosting would be an appropriate amount of money to be considered a donator.
My 2 cents. Cool

that makes sense. and even that would be much more (in fiat) now that it was before as I'm sure the forum is bigger now and needs a much bigger server

Probably because they're working on a new forum software?
Anyway, not everyone would use 2FA and even if you enforce everyone to use it, issues like unable to login due to 2FA would become the new problem.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
it doesn't have to be mandatory. but users who are worried about security would have that option

"issues like unable to login due to 2FA would become the new problem"
are you saying it's better to have hacked account and hackers to scam with those accounts rather than a few users who don't know how to use 2fa to complain?

I don't see why but maybe it was difficult to implement that in the past
and I understand it's not worth putting a lot of effort developing something if the new version of the forum is about to be ready

but $15 or $20 and a few clicks?! it's already done, ready to be easily installed
it's like if someone already completed that bounty but charged $20 instead of 2 btc
it is worth even if it lasts 1 month before the next forum version! and I doubt it will last less than several months or more than 1 year

Re: How to see latest / newest threads?
by
rapsaodan84

Would like to see a list of the newest threads within a board, how can I do?
Thanks!

the most recently created? regardless of the last post?

add ";sort=first_post;desc" at the end of the ULR. for example for meta
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0;sort=first_post;desc

Yes, that, many thanks!

And if I would like to filter this list by title, how can I do that?

filter how? show only titles starting with something? I don't think that's possible
you can try in the advanced search

2fa with a simple $20 plugin?
by
rapsaodan84
on 31/01/2018, 22:41:50 UTC
hi

I know 2fa has been discussed before but I still don't know why it wasn't implemented

is there anything bad about just buying this ($20) and installing it?
https://www.smfpacks.com/2fa/
or something similar?

why is not installed? is it something bad?

if you mean the last reply then that's the default sort and you don't need to do anything

Video: what is bitcoin (really, not just gold mining comparisons)
by
rapsaodan84
on 29/01/2018, 16:41:44 UTC
I've watched this video and found it very informative to understand how bitcoin really works, not just the typical comparisons between bitcoin and gold mining
but actually how the system works to send transactions and confirm them in blocks, including the required operations

Ever wonder how Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies) actually work?

I hope this is useful

Re: Can a newbie become a merit source ?

Can a newbie become a merit source ?  Provided he has made those 10 valuable posts. Or this limited to higher rank members.
first, it's not you who must make the 10 valuable posts, you must find 10 posts worth of merit

and I'd guess newbies can't be sources
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

theymos a request:

please add the merit details in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=xxxxxx;sa=showPosts

great system for making us make sense. thank you

It's in the main profile page already. For you, that link would be https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=479624 and you can see a clickable 'Merit' link.

but he means showing the merit of every post after clicking 'Show the last posts of this person.' if I understand him correctly
