I havent been to bratislavia but I can tell you that eastern europe in general is full of people with a high amount of distrust of banking and the goverment.  Bitcoin gives them a way to securely buy things online and will be a huge boom for them.

1. Exchange their local currency for a currency you can purchase bitcoin with.
2. Trade goods or services for bitcoin
3. trade other monetary substances for bitcoin.  People are saying gold and silver but it could be anything you can sell like cars, books, golf clubs etc.

Re: How Bitcoin Centralizes Profit in the Hands of Miners

dude, your missing the point here.  More and more bitcoins pour into the hands of regular folk everyday as well as into the hands of miners. Even if only one coporation controls all minining, which won't happen, they currency will not be centralized to them because you, me and everyone else will have bitcoin!

first mover advantage and none of the new currencies have a single killer feature that makes them rediculously better then.  Take PPCoin which is my preferred alternative.  All sorts of great features but the major drawback that for right now the majority of coins that have been mined so far were mined first day.  Needs time to mature to be competitive or beat out btc.

my two bitcents say the two coins with the most long term potential is PPCoin and Litecoin which both offer something distinct and of major advantage over btc.  its still so early in the game that any crypto currency can have a great chance right now!

speculation speculation and more speculation.  Its not going to kill any newbie to wait another month to see what happens.  the price is not going to stabilize anytime soon.   It could be 1000 or 10 bucks!

scarab, take a look at some of the alternate crypto currencies.  Theres alot more potential for that little power to mine in the short term with something like Feathercoin etc.  be prepared for wild speculation however!

The point is noone is ever really correct in guessing these short term market adjustments.  Today will be a small blip compared to the bright future for bitcoin.  If you believe in the product and the idea this is a small blip in the long term roadmap.  If your just here for short term speculation, todays probably a very bad day for you.
