Supply and Demand

So, how long do you fellows think it will take for BTC prices to increase and balance out for the decrease in new supply?

New supply of coins for the market has now halved.  More of the coins being exchanged will be old coins.  I don't expect prices to double at all, at least not for a long time, but when might we see prices steadily increase due to decreased new supply and where might it top out.   I personally would't be surprised to see $14~$16 over the next 6 months and maybe $18~$22 by a years end.  This is of coarse if we don't get any type of bubbles.  I think ASICs could be a bubble maker or a bubble popper and the most important thing to look out for

Prices have gone up, but I think this was mostly due to more buying right before the halving.

It'll be interesting to see where things go from here.
I really love the idea of BTC.  I just wish they were a bit more useful in a practice sense.

I might continue until ASIC's hit.

Payout halved, still making money but now cut in half.  I think over the next couple weeks difficultly could actually drop some as GPU's get turned off.  Looking at some polls looks like at least 20% are.  Network GHash may then drop back down to 18~22 GHash which would drop difficulty and increase my payout some.  So who knows what happens.  Just keep mining!

I will be cancelling my ASICs from Butterfly labs though.

My first random run into website taking bitcoin
by

So, this is the first website I have been too that accepts bitcoins, all by chance at that.  All the others I have been too I am specifically looking for or find links too on forums like this.

http://defensedistributed.com/

What is also pretty cool is this is where I found this website.
http://www.popsci.com/

Pretty cool general idea too boot.  I can see this being the way of the future as CAD printers get cheaper.  Would be pretty cool to need something and just be able to download a file, even if it costs a couple bucks, and print out what I need. :-)

Doesn't seem like a fair bet if the OP "knows" 100% that it will be >$12 on the 27th and we don't know what his sources are.

Though 20% increase, Ill take that anyday. :-)

are there anyone who are in top 25 list in btcguild hall of fame ?

im just curious  Smiley

The thing is that those that are may only be using 50% of their total hashing power on www.btcguild.com. Those that are not in the top 25 could if they wished move up fast. What would be more prudent is to ask who has the most shares submitted.

Yeah, I can see that.  Especially when there are DDoS attacks, the entire farm doesn't go down.  But I am sure that the Guild has private servers for the top miners that wouldn't be effected by a DDoS. This could potentially keep more of ones farm on their service.  Especially if those servers don't go down when the Guild has been attacked in the past.

Re: Next best coin to mine after ASIC takes over bitcoin?
by

I use pooled merged mining currently.  Will the BFL ASIC's be able to also mine namecoins, or just the bitcoins?  Maybe my gpu's can stick on merged mining, but mainly be there to get namecoins if those ASICs can't mine namecoins.
BFL asics should be able to merge mine.  You could mine litecoins with GPUs.

Well, GPU's are very programmable.  The ASICs not so much.  From what I have been reading, if the hash algorithm for bitcoins changes any bit by say a potential shift to SHA-3 (especially when SHA-2 gets compromised) the ASICs are then worthless.  I have no clue if all these other coincurriences (namecoin in this case) uses the same hash algorithm as bitcoins.  If it is the same, it should then be able to merge mine or mine other coins so long as the software is there to support it right?

My latest transaction took 6 days from Mt.Gox to Dwolla.

I missed the whole Mt.Gox/Dwolla fiasco, and when I came back my dwolla account in Mt.Gox under "available withdraw methods" was still there.

Actually didn't know about the conflict until after I sent the funds, which thankfully made it safely to Dwolla.

Next best coin to mine after ASIC takes over bitcoin?

So, if these ASIC from BFL are as advertised, or even half of what is advertised, GPUs will quickly become a hot brick burning money when it comes to mining bitcoins.

There are other coincurriences out there I have noticed.  What do you think would be the best coin to mine with GPUs once bitcoin is no longer profitable for gpus?  Seems like mining another coin could be profitable, and all the gpus could just switch to another coin and help bring up a coin to being something worthy.  Im sure a lot will make a shift to a new coin instead of selling off all their hardware.  Bitcoin was a risk that was worth pennies at the time, just like these other coins, just that bitcoin miners already have the hardware.

Though I don't know much about these other coins.  I ordered some ASIC if they do pan out.  If they do pan out, Im hoping I can keep a similar BTC per day ratio in mining and then switch my GPUs over to the next best coin to mine and hope that it becomes really profitable.

Yeah it is risky, but if these things pan out with production near target, or even half of what target is, people not on the wagon who are mining now are going to be screwed royally.  This will be the only real viable product to mine with, and if rumors are true, everyone and their mother will get one.  Think the wait list is bad now on say a weekly production of 100 units, imagine after they come out and make GPUs paper weights!  GPUs will be worthless with a massive flood on ebay, and have to wait forever to get a ASIC unit.

Even if the hash production is say that of a 5830, still not that bad of a product.  Performance of a 5830 using what is it, 2watts of power and not that much more money.  Plus I can still keep my GPUs and double my hash rate. :-)

From what I have been reading around, I don't get how they can make these available in October when from what I read, that is when the silicon will be shipped to them. Seems like the turn around should be a little longer unless they expect to have zero issues with silicon, pcb, and other components.  Either that, or those first on the top of the list are going to have a higher chance of having a bad unit.

Re: Problem adding second video card

It should be able to boot at least.

Power cables are plugged into both cards right?
If the 9800GT boots by itself, and you are getting rid of it, why do you need to make sure it boots with the radeon?

You have a bootable CD, like a WindowsPE disc or UbuntuLive disc?  See if that works.  Could be a power issue.  It might be 500watts, which should be enough to boot at least, but could be an amp issue maybe?  Does the PSU have different rails, and each GPU on a different rail?

Suggestions might seem silly, but sometimes something obvious could and can usually be overlooked.

Re: Reason for current Bitcoin crash
by
red_dog007

Even if Bitcoin gets in the news in a negative light, that is only short term.  Long term it seems like it would be beneficial because Bitcoin is getting attention, getting the word spread around.

Even currencies, stocks, and other types of investments have ups and downs.  For anyone to even really put Bitcoin in the news, even if negative is good imo.  Kinda legitimizes bitcoin as an investment outlet.  Just that many more people know about it and will research it. Investments usually really only make the news too if sometime bad happens, unless you are a large booming industry like Apple.  Then you are always in the news good or bad.

I look at the market a lot like a stock.  Very risky, but can be very profitable.  Stocks can have have crazy ups and downs too.  Just because the stock is $8 today doesn't mean that it can't be $50 the same time next year or even regain all its losses within a couple days.  Or even go lower.

Re: Four 7970's crossfired in windows
by

Might need to make sure you will have proper cooling, especially if they are going all on the same mobo.  Mine are in an open environment so are not that bad, but I have a fan on my 5970 cause that thing will get LOUD otherwise.
I was planning on running 4 in mine, but I feel best that I just run 3.  Even with coolers on them the middles ones just couldn't get enough airflow.

Did you pick up those Visiontek ones for uber cheap?  I thought about buying 1 or 2 of those but I don't dig reference coolers anymore so opted out. :-/

When you game, if you game, just enable crossfire when you game.  With those cards, you don't even really need to crossfire unless you are running eyefinity.

Expanding Bitcoin as Payment Option
by
red_dog007
on 19/08/2012, 22:11:32 UTC
I have been a on/off lurker for 1.5 years.  Just now really getting into it now.  Did a small investment in 8 GPUs to mine on.  Thankfully electricity is fairly cheap here.

I do a lot of internet purchasing.  Everything except groceries for myself.  I'm sure we all do.

Not sure if there has been a movement on trying to get websites that we all shop at to accept bitcoins, but I have started this myself.  I would love to pay in BC  if the option existed on the websites I shop at.  I have started the process of emailing these companies on when they will accept BC, if they have looked into accepting BC, etc.  I will be emailing them periodically as well about it.  Im a long time shopper at all these websites, so will be a long time nuisance until they take BC, lol.

The BC community is pretty large it seems.  I figure if enough people email the stores they shop at, some websites would really consider accepting BC and take it as a payment option.  Thus strengthening BC place in the world. :-)

Re: HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT BTC
by
red_dog007
on 19/08/2012, 21:48:18 UTC
Not sure how, if it was internet media or tv media, but I found out about silkroad.  Was kinda interested in it, and kinda surprised that you can only get to it through Tor.   Checked it out and was like "what is this currency they take?"

Looked into it.  Shortly there after bought 2 6870s to mine on.  Took a couple days for me to figure out all the accounts I needed to make.

I unforgettably got out of bitcoins as I joined after the major crash and prices tanked.  Just wasn't interesting.  But now I just recently built a tee tiny "farm" (8 new gpus), so now I am really invested in it.  :-)

I hope to be able to use bitcoins more and more as I love the idea.  Hopefully one day Amazon and Newegg :-) Though right now the only thing I can do is mine.

Lowering your memory clock can also decrease your core temps a couple to few C.

Increase the fan speed a few %?  Can work wonders.  On my 6870 I took fan speed up 5% from auto settings and it decreased my temps 6C.

Isn't the -f setting in GUIminer allow for more or less desktop usage?  Still mine at 100% but allows other apps to utilize some gpu power if needed.
