Re: Question from a Bachelor in Econ

From one Econ grad to another, kind of. The closest we have at the moment is stuff like Payeer, PerfectMoney, EgoPay, OKpay, that kind of stuff. Their fees are high and it's not P2P. The problem with pegging is that someone has to back it up. Sure, I could create JimmyCoin and say 1JMC=$1, but if I don't have a dollar in waiting for every dollar in circulation, and therefore can't deliver on my promise to give $1 for each JMC, people get weary, other people offer to buy it for less, and now JMC is just like every other cryptocurrency.

There are two ways around this problem: insurance and a huge stockpile. Insurance (like FDIC for banks) doesn't exist in any reliable form, and likely won't unless cryptocurrency can become more money-like. Right now, merchants are accepting BTC and the like, but not holding on to it. To get them to hold it, we would need stability, but as per your question, stability is the problem already.

This leaves having a stockpile as the most viable option. The problem? Not profitable. This is why PerfectMoney and the like charge fees, because they pretty much have to keep all dollars from currency exchange in a big stockpile.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Well, the large gap between exchanges tells me maybe not. People are losing faith in it, so to make up for that risk, prices are higher.

In other words, it's not looking good.

Bounty
by

Hey all, I had the idea the other day to release a few things online, each for a specific bounty. I'd love to use Bitcoin (as it's anonymous), but I don't have much of a clue how to get this out there for people to contribute to.

My demographic is college students, so things are a bit tricky in a few regards:
1) Getting this info out could be rather difficult, considering the mass of ads flying on campuses. I'm open to all ideas here, as the ones I've got are a bit generic.
2) Students are bombarded with things asking for money all the time. I would need this to stand out as something legitimate and reasonable, and I don't really have a method for that.
3) Most students don't know about Bitcoin, so they would need to learn and convert USD to BTC rather quickly (due to the relatively short attention span =P). I would potentially need to partner with someone willing to do PPUSD to BTC transactions (that's the best I've got right now).

Sorry to drop all this here (especially at such an hour), but I figured that there are surely some motivated experts on the forum (or bored individuals, or both =P).

-Rem

PS: I'm a student as well, so if I'm taking a jab at students in general, I'm also taking a jab at myself Tongue.

This could be useful: Shoutbox! Admin feedback?
by

on 29/06/2011, 05:47:31 UTC
I'm on another forum, http://www.drumforum.org/, and if you notice right on the top, they have a site-wide chat (or "shoutbox"). I think it could be a rather useful addition, and it could also provide an area for quick chit-chat. I'm no coder, so perhaps someone here and a few Admins could make it happen!

I feel like short rounds work around midnight and such, but longer rounds would work for other times. Leave it for a few days to gather data, then alter (if you want) as needed. Also, Herb, it may be redundant, but you may want to copypaste and create a new thread about King Of The Mountain separate from the KOTH one. Frankly, no-one seems to know about KOTM, and a new thread may help to spread the news about it. I'll do it if you'd like, I just didn't want to create a post using your game and your words without throwing it out here first.

NothinG may have a point. Hmm, perhaps let this run a few days, and if it picks up more, great! If not, keep 1hr rounds for the times a lot of people play, and elongate others, e.g, a 7pm round that lasts till 10.

It being unexplored may be a good thing, as we can't have Bitcoin associated with too many socially negative things at once. We already have untraceable gambling taking place here on the forum, and stocking the list of places that accept Bitcoin with pornography retailers might not bode well.

Truth be told, it'll probably happen at some point. I'm just hoping closer to never than to now.

I'm going to look into it, but regardless, it's not something to worry about. I didn't have my client up yet, but now I do, so that issue should be off the table in the future  Smiley. What was the exact amount sent, if I may ask?

I still insist that you put in a refund at the end of one game, not the 30 second limbo at the start of the next. Your transaction log validates this theory, as you put in at 1:51. That means that you either put in well into the game or right before. I will ask this: what time did you put in?

After this, /argument.

Dank, your bid was probably entered in before the new round started... And thus it went into the previous round's pot and not the current one. So if you didn't get doubled, you should have at least received a partial refund based on the percentage that NothinG states in the rules when a round ends.
That's the problem, I never got a refund.

Partial refund may mean like 0.002 BTC depending on the pot at the time.

Also, did anyone else just get sporadically banned?
