Can you comment on how loud it is, how many dB?

The fan rpm is a good indicator, my guess would be "silent" in mining terms ;P

I am surprised the VRMs have so few bubbles.  I would have expected them to be much hotter.

I was surprised as well.  Not many bubbles at all coming off the VRMs. 

I am uploading a video to youtube and I will link it as soon as it is done.

The VRMs shouldn't generate that much heat tbh so when you have a efficient way of cooling them they should run quite cool, a few watts can easily create a 100C hotspot if there's no efficient way for it to dissipate.

Let's change PoW so that anyone with moderate amount of capital can attack us, sounds like a great idea! Both cpu and gpu minable chains would be an easy target at this point when the economic target is as big and hated? as BTC. You sit here and worry about BU miners trying to kill a minority chain in case of a fork and want to trade that for gpu miners (who many are heavily invested into alt coins) and/or bot net owners. I guess the BU miners wouldn't mind since they would win by default when the core chain self destructs on a new PoW.


If you want some tinfoil this is how I would take over BTC on a budget and couldn't just 51% the current network due to my inability/unwillingness to spend the needed funds.

- Get cosy with lead devs.
- Push for PoW change to something supposedly ASIC resistant.
- Develop ASIC solution in advance for when switch happens (can be on shit node and somewhat low cost, use mining profits to jump to bleeding edge asap later) This would cost a fraction of what building hardware to try and take over current network by building hardware (more than factor of 10-20x). This might even be within reach of a wealthy early adopter *hint*, a couple of mil is enough to do a mass rollout on say 65/40 nm.
- Easily keep CPU/GPU miners at bay due to them being unprofitable, doesn't even make it apparent anything strange is going on (someone just have cheaper power and more cards duh!)
- Reap majority of all block rewards.
- Stay cosy with the devs and push for any and all changes you want to do, congrats you now own the network without anyone the wiser.
- Even if competition starts developing their own ASICs its something that takes months to get working hardware out of and even longer to mass produce.

So I guess Bitmain decided to not learn from BFL then, trying to go cheap on PSUs meant for 24/7 operation with close to 100% load is not the brightest idea.

This has been discussed at length on the forum.  Bitmain is doing what they are required to.  Please stop blaming them for the shitty import rules of your godforsaken Country.

One order I got was labeled as "PC GAME" and got slapped with another 10% import duty due to their sloppiness, also had problems due to them not stating a shipping cost and inaccurate weight. The problem with writing "Bitcoin miner" is that it's not a recognized customs category for goods and 99% of customs worker wont know in what category to put it (hence delays and complications)

Meanwhile labeling a shipment of chocolate chip cookies as chocolate chip cookies is not by the customs standards either, but then 99%+ of all customs workers can figure out what category it belongs to.

The only way anyone except Intel is making 14nm bitcoin ASICs is if they pay a shit load of money to Intel.

TBH, Intel is barely making stuff on 14nm ;P

They will ROI within 2.5 months as long as you ordered enough of them to beat the curve. 

Someone needs to work on their math skills, if one ant is unprofitable then 1000 of them will be as well as long as the cost of running them /ant stays the same.

Yes (can't be otherwise). 133GH/chip, if every chip requires $150-250 in VRMs alone it's out of the market already.

You could probably find some cheaper design alternatives at those loads however, remember they only used half the VRMs for most of the October units. Then again why would anyone bother trying to get these on boards even if they were given the chips for free, considering the hardware will be obsolete by the time you have something working. Wouldn't mind one for a key chain though!

I hope they can run at something near 1W/GH or they are useless for most of us.
The point is what hashrate will we have @ 1W/GH

Got my October Jupiter running at 535GH/s@550W (at the wall) for the last 2 months

Doesn't say if they are used or not. Which could mean they are stripping out the Jupiter boards and filling up their Boden datorhall with Neptune boards. Which might explain why they didn't have any spare chips during July.

Could they be removing the DC/DC's from the Jupiter boards to put on the next batch of customer Neptune boards?

Or the neptune chip is pin compatible.

by 20th september your S1 will be worthless.

if 100GH/s@1W/GHs is worthless on the 20th of sept then the S3 is almost as worthless as well, might just skip buying hardware altogether then!

Way to risky to buy the upgrade kit as the price of BTC continues to tank.

Not to mention you are throwing away 105-110~GH/s@1W/GHs per ant that you upgrade if you were under-volting. So for 0,46BT what you get is
a 350GH/s@250W upgrade compared to just keeping the S1, might as well just buy a S3+ instead.

He has heard of Bitcoin and was thinking about doing mining in his home. He agrees Bitcoin hasn't spread as much in 5 years as the smartphone did.
An interesting but I'm not so sure it is fair to compare Bitcoins growth over the last five years to the growth of the smartphone.  The smartphone is being backed/produced by major companies with extremely deep pockets for one.  Bitcoin is grass roots and mainly depends on word to mouth forms of advertisements.  Expecting the same results as far as growth doesn't seem fair. 

The "smartphone" era is far away in the future for crypto, we have barely evolved away from this

I have a unit with the fans blowing the wrong way, exhausting towards the ethernet port, anyone else experience this?

I guess some poor employe at Bitmain turned them the wrong direction after being kept awake for a week straight assembling 100xx ants. As long as both of them are mounted "wrongly" it should be just fine.

Does anyone have the weird problem where normal clocked s3's give 440 GH/s quite well, and overclocked S3's (to 250), give...440 Gh/s?

They do seem to start out faster, with a higher rate initially, but always seem to go back down to this level. I just don't understand why they would do that. Hardware errors are low in all cases. I'm using P2Pool, but I don't think that should have anything to do with it. Does anyone shed some light on the issue?

From my testing they don't seem to show this behavior if you keep them cold, and I mean cold. I stuck a unit that would do 250 for 1-2h and then started falling in performance in front of a portable AC and got the load temps below 25C, it seemed to be just fine at 495GH/s+ under those temps (12h~ of testing) but not really worth it with the AC costs ;P

Or maybe it's just random behavior and it will drop the has hash rate despite the cooling given enough time, someone will figure these out eventually :/

One of my S3's overclocks like a beast!

The other sadly doesn't suffer the same fate! it's hashing at 430 at 218, any higher and the rate drops!

Make sure to keep that beast cool (sub 35C pref), they really don't like getting warm when you run them at 237/250MHz (hash rate starts dropping and you might get and x or two after 10h+ of running)

Well lets compare to cpu world. Intel chip for example. Ivy bridge to haswell. Extremely negligible gain, not really even worth the sunk cost of RD. From consumer perspective not even worth the upgrade. Any diff in the bitcoin world, i think not.

CPU performance scaling is limited by other factors than just process node, if you want to compare performance progression over node history take a look at GPUs since they are more similar to mining gear (can just add more cores for improved performance so much better scaling with node shrinks). Beside Ivy and Haswell are both on 22nm and Intel was mainly focusing on performance/w and GPU performance.
