Re: XT 12.7% of Network - No blocks mined
by

I contribute resources to the bitcoin network by running my home computer as a node. I switched to running an XT node some weeks ago. I think changes from Bitcoin Core not related to a block size increase should be kept to a minimum at least until the dust settles, however. Either way, running an XT node is just my way of signaling to the world that as a longtime Bitcoin user I support block limit increases above the current cap of 1 MB.

Boom! Thank you. I'll start putting orders out for these contracts over the next few days. One of the nice features of it is it's a way to bet on presidential politics without tying up bitcoin until 2016.

You mean by selling earlier?

Well these resolve sooner - the prez and nominee markets don't resolve until there's a winner.

How deep are the markets? Generally speaking. As a former Intrade user, I felt like there were millions of dollars locked up on there during the height of Mittens vs B-rock

Yeah it's a far cry from InTrade. I definitely wish there were more liquidity, but it is what it is given the current regulatory situation and bitcoin adoption. I tried to deposit into InTrade to bet on Obama back in the day since Romney was so overvalued, but I needed to send a check to Ireland which would've taken days. Much better with bitcoin.

Hi Predictious. Over at Predictit.org, a USD based prediction market, they seem to be generating quite a bit of interest in propositions on the polling average for various key polls by certain dates. For example, Hillary Clinton to be polling over 60% (according to the average on realclearpolitics.com) by July 31st. Is this something you guys would consider as well?

Please to anyone reading this who's even considering depositing into this site or another one like it, any site promising exorbitant "risk-free" interest is 100% going to be a scam that will swindle its users and surely wind up keeping more than whatever little bits it might pay out. 0.1% hourly might not sound like much, but it's over 6000% annually and nothing like this is even close to realistic.

It pains me to see people falling for this, and I see this site advertised on other websites and this thread comes up in a google search which is why I'm posting here.

Is this forum a good place to request software features?

I'd love to be able to disable auto-post blinds. Often I sit at tables alone trying to start games, which can take hours, and when someone does sit down I happen not to be immediately at my computer so all that happens is I post the small blind and then time out (and they leave). Even just a confirmation that you want to be dealt into the first hand of a new game would be nice.

I'm unable to login now, it's telling me my google authenticator code is incorrect but I'm able to use google auth elsewhere. Another person I know who has gauth enabled reported the same. Anyone else experiencing this? Maybe the server clock is off?

Re: UTXO reduction by trx-to-self?

  • similar to malleability it changes the transaction ids of your valid inputs
  • it may invalidate your partially signed transaction that you got from a third party on a common multisig address
  • it may make your bitcoins lower priority, since their age is diminished

How could the first point be practically exploited? I'm failing to see any issue with inputs being changed. If you're expecting a payment with a certain txid, that txid will still exist even if it is later combined with other utxos right?

You buy a coffee at your local shop.  At the same time you send the transaction, someone combines your UTXOs with another transaction that uses the same input.   Only one of the two transactions wins.  So you may accidentally double spend on your coffee and do not even know it.

Quote
I'm not familiar enough with how the second point might pose an issue, do you have an example?

GreenAddress would be an example.  They have a service to keep your bitcoins safe against someone stealing your private key by requiring that every transaction is additionally signed by them after you logged in with a second factor.  They also give you a pre-signed time-locked transaction that gives you access to your bitcoins after a few weeks/months without their intervention in case they go out of service or lose their private keys.  However if someone in the mean time compresses your UTXOs this transaction would no longer be valid.

Other scenarios are payment channels where you also get a time-locked transaction to reclaim your coins if the server crashes.

Thanks that makes a lot of sense now. Not sure how to work around those problems. I do hope we come up with some new ways to reduce the UTXO set in the near future, though.

Sorry Micon but if you had even attempted to run a legitimate site then all of this probably wouldn't have happened to you. But now you're getting what you deserve. Fuck off and get a real job if you care so much about your daughter's future.

What's not legitimate about a poker site with fair games, speedy withdrawals, 100% solvency, and a policy of promptly returning all player balances when legal action forces them to shut down? I've played on a lot of sites, and SealsWithClubs was more legitimate than any poker room not named PokerStars or SWCPoker.

Besides being a hard fork, there are some undesired effects.

  • similar to malleability it changes the transaction ids of your valid inputs
  • it may invalidate your partially signed transaction that you got from a third party on a common multisig address

For the third point, this is a valid concern and maybe the priority/age formula would have to be modified not to penalize consolidating utxo's.

I wanted to share some feedback for potential improvements to the site. I've e-mailed about these before but I'm not sure I got a firm response.

1) The volume stats on the site are consistently way off. Often times the all time volume will read X whereas my own trading activity may greatly exceed X for that contract. It would be nice to have accurate and more detailed volume statistics. Something like a historical volume chart (the way we have historical price) would be very helpful and informative. It would also be nice to know at any time the total number of outstanding shares for a given contract.

2) I believe Predictious is still calculating margin requirements on a per-ccontract basis for the most part. For example if I'm short 10 shares of Joe Shmoe to win the 2016 US Presidential Election, there shouldn't be any additional margin requirements for me to offer to go short 10 shares of a different candidate (lets say Jane Doe). Only one candidate can win the 2016 election, so only one of my short positions can result in a loss. Currently, it seems that margin requirements go up in this case. Optimizing the margin requirements calculations to that it results in the lowest margin requirements possible would be a big improvement,, and would allow users to make more predictions with less money. That's a win-win. I realize this introduces some complexity to the trading engine but I think it would be a greatly valuable feature.

I've enjoyed Predictious and I hope these suggestions are taken into account and that the site continues to grow and improve.

I agree that point #2 is a very important issue.  If you could resolve this I think volume on your site would double or more.  I personally would increase my volume quite a bit.

Yes I'd increase my volume and order sizes as well, particularly on markets where there will be exactly 1 winner out of a number of possibilities. That describes most of the most active contracts I think - Oscars, election winners, sport championship winners, etc... When trading relative longshots, lets say i'm selling a contract at 0.5 mɃ, it sucks to have to tie up 9.5 mɃ for potentially months at a time for a relatively small payout. This is even more extreme when it's 9.8 or 9.9 to win 0.2 or 0.1. I realize that margin requirements need to be enforced, but they should be minimized where possible.

It's a shame, I used this exchange a bit and really liked the interface and some of their blog posts, but they never really seemed to attract much volume. I'd speculate they were partly overshadowed by other new US exchanges like Coinbase.

Agreed. But I never saw any promotions by them to attract new users. Even here in Bitcointalk, I hardly ever say any of their offers or discounts. Accept the truth. These guys were not interested in running the site. Their intentions were something else.

There were definitely promos but perhaps they weren't advertised well enough. They had a referral program with signup bonuses, as well as no fee trading (which was slightly misleading as there was still a fee on the bank transfer to fund your account).

I checked my account for the first time in months. No new announcements.

However, I have a small fraction of bitcoin available that I didn't have before, 0.00181734 BTC.

It's below the minimum to withdraw, in fact it's below their withdrawal fee, but I find this interesting because it suggests SOMETHING is happening with the frozen balances. At this rate and assuming their volume stays the same, I'll easily be dead before I get my entire balance. But I thought it was worth noting.

It wasn't today, but I recently paid for satellite TV (Dish) with bitcoin for the first time ever. Was pretty cool, and I'll have the option to do it t again for future months. I would probably do it every month but I forego the 2% cashback from paying with a credit card - Dish keeps the savings from the lower transaction costs that come with bitcoin payment - and I'm not desperate to spend my bitcoin or anything.

pretty sloppy to not have HTTPS enabled here.  hashes of builds, etc.

sloppy on security is the last thing i want to see in an unregulated bitcoin poker site.

someone was repsonsible for security, and they quit.  maybe i'm in the minority, but i'm skeptical of micon et al to be able to live upto the same standards.

Regulation?  LOL

I lost $ on a regulated site and was very luck to get to get my $ from another.

There are many regulated sites where people lost $ when the site closed with no warning and in every case the regulator said there was nothing they could do.

TY MICON

Wait, didn't Full Tilt start refunding the money last year ? or that never happened ?

I am still owed upper 5 digits from my Full Tilt balance because I was erroneously tagged as an affiliate. I also had thousands more on Absolute Poker that is gone for good. I got my Seals balance back in under 24 hours.

I also meant to add that I and everyone I know who had a balance on Seals received their full balance within roughly 24 hours of submitting a request through the website. Again kudos to Seals for having the competence and trustworthiness to operate this long with this many players and bitcoins going through their servers and never lose any player deposits even despite facing adversity. It's a refreshing change of pace from the Mt Goxes and Full Tilts/UB&APs of the world.
