Cool idea Legendster, I actually love the sound of the "You've got mail" concept proposed by mistress magpie.
Naturally it would be a musical :-)

If you study the potential of the bitcoin protocol and it is very clear that the power of the platform is currently vastly underutilised. Yes there are built in contracts, escrow, and other complex operations, but these are barely utilised, in spite of them being desperately needed by the bitcoin community and ecosystem.
I don't know the developers and I'm not technically qualified to say for sure, but the next years Google could look just like this.
One of the interesting things about buying/mining any coin is that you not only get the value of the coin and the ability to spend it, but also it is a share in the business of the coin, much like a stock market share. Why complain about them raising 20million when you'd prefer it was 2 million.

Clearly bitcoin is going to be big business - if you want to win it makes sense to be well funded, or you'll get squashed by the next guy.

Time will tell if these guys succeed or crash, but this should be looked at as more than a speculative currency investment - it is taking a stake in the development of a promising new technology.

Personally I'm bullish about bitcoin, but not (just) as a speculator. I'm bullish about the protocol and how it is going to impact the future.

I see bitcoin as being on par with social media or the internet. We are at the very start, but its the programming and contract potential that will be the long term value. The currency aspect will be important, but that's just a special use case of something much more powerful. I've got a lot more interest in what these guys are doing than the next Dogecoin, that's for sure!

As to the people who said "they aren't even going to build the apps for you!" - that's like complaining that the internet sucked as an invention because it didn't have facebook yet.

Personally I'd use Bitcoin, Litecoin or Earthcoin at this stage of the game - I'd love to be able to use any coin I wanted though - looking forward to the coin-agnostic future!

Hi shakezula
I can't find the github foocoin repository.
https://github.com/foocoin/foocoin

What should we use instead, or where can we find it?

Brain gears turning slowly - I'm guessing we just use barcoin. Could somebody confirm the obvious for me..... and for others just as slow.

Thanks shakezula
This is a truly awesome guide and a wonderful contribution to the cryptocoin community - excited to read through it and try some test run implementations.

Love your work! You are a rockstar, sir!

Hi Facewreck, I've been thinking about exactly the same thing so I'm keen to get involved as some level, including financial investment. I also have web design/development experience for setting up a website and assisting with social media or other digital marketing and branding around the coin and the launch.

Personally I'd find a scrypt coin more appealing - and probably many in this community/ecosystem would too because Bitcoin mining has basically become an industrial process out of reach of individuals now.

I've got a number of ideas relating to implementation which may be of interest to you.

PM me for more details.

Thanks Kail, appreciate your efforts. It would be great if the exchange meant only the user could edit their own transactions.
Somebody was messing up the exchange and editing other people's entries - frustrating.
One option would be to require people to use a public gmail ID and be invited to join, then you could at least tell who did what.

If your account represents a Bitcoin business or you are a developer, please post here so we can get you into the forum beyond. State your company, project in addition to what you wish to do on the forums. We will get you whitelisted promptly.

Godspeed in your endeavors and thank you for your service!

I am here with the express intent of determining if it makes sense for me to develop a bitcoin oriented business, specifically making available a smart card that could be used to protect the ECDSA keys used in the Bitcoin protocols. Such a solution would make it virtually impossible to steel the keys without a rubber hose.
This sounds interesting - so many interesting potential ventures in the bitcoin space

I'm working on a simple consumer coin exchange where people can easily buy coins using bank transfer.

Brand new to this - trying to understand it as we speak.
I'm testing the water running Asteroid to mine litecoin and altcoins on OSX on my imac.
It's working, but very slow - clearly I need GPU rigs if I'm serious about trying this.

I'm really just trying to understand the whole economy/ecology of bitcoin/altcoins better and this seems like a good place to start.

A ban like this is certainly possible, even likely. Bitcoin holds serious threats to so many aspects of government operation.
However, it will be like banning the internet - the rest of the world will just laugh at you. Bitcoin et al is the future.
BTW have you seen how the war on drugs have gone - you can make pronouncements to ban things, but you cannot stop them, especially when they are so good.
Also there is potential risk of civic unrest if people ban something which many perceive as legitimate - it would be like seizing assets.

My Philosophy with bitcoin is that it could end up worth $100-000 - $1M per coin, but there is a real chance it will be worth zero in a years time.
I put in enough that I won't kick myself if 1BTC would let me buy a house a few years down the track, but little enough that it ends up worth zero I have no regrets.
Its definitely requires a long term approach - sit and hold or dollar cost average. Be totally prepared to lose the lot.

Re: is it possible to make a bitcoin miner to be used from a home CPU. and how?

Hi NakedJedi - I'm in a similar boat - I'd suggest you start mining litecoin to see how it works, then spend some time around the forum and try mining some of the new altcoins that interest you.
From what I've seen so far, overall, if you want to make money from crypto you are probably best to buy and hold some litecoin, bitcoin and some new alt coins as a speculative move, but I see the appeal of wanting to mine.
Just realise the serious guys have 1000s of times the mining power you have and getting faster everyday.
