Does Litecoin fill a certain niche, like Namecoin does?

I'm not new to Bitcoin, but I'm new to the various altcoins. Is or was there a specific purpose behind the creation of Litecoin? Or is it just an alternative?

I'm feeling the same way. I wish I'd bought some Bitcoins back when they were fresh. LTC may or may not take off like BTC has, but it couldn't hurt to have a few of them just in case.
