Q2: Can old machines be used to pool mine bipcoin? I am going to try to use an old 2Ghz system with 3GB RAM running a single core AMD 64 bit CPU. It's pretty snappy with Ubuntu 14.04 but that CPU is quite old. Tho mobo in that system has an integrated GPU, so if the wolf miner will work on that system it might produce a better hash rate than a CPU miner would.
Don't bother. To say the result will be disappointing is an understatement. Even core 2 chips are not worth it, as is the case too with anything older than sandy bridge.
Also, cryptonight GPU mining is not that much more efficient than cpu, even for dedicated cards, which is why such coins are a favorite among cpu miners. I doubt that integrated gpu will even work for mining.
Thanks for the info. From my research Sandy Bridge came out in 2007, so that is 10 years old now. My source is wikipedia, so it could be inaccurate / wrong.
I had my doubts about mining with this old system. It might be good to put a few words on the bipcoin mining page stating mining isn't practical on systems older than X years. Sandy Bridge being 10 years old is a rather big age limit, but you'd be surprised how many people squeeze out every last drop of use from old systems.

Perhaps for Windoze noobs, but there are gaps in the steps for linux users on how to mine, like how to select the correct YAM file to download off mega-dl site for the CPU being used to mine with.
Q1: Why do you use the proprietary YAM miner in your tut? According to Atithasos it takes 2.5% of the proceeds. Atithasos says the lucas jones (wolf miner) can also be used, but it's a GPU miner not a CPU miner. I'll check into it. It requires compilation but that should be no problem. I do understand why you don't get into detailed instructions for linux users, most of whom probably already know how to mine, compile and use cmd line tools. A few words might be nice for those that are new to it tho.

Hey Michael, how's it going these days, long time since we've crossed paths. I actually just posted this article about it on Steemit if you want to refresh your memory.
Anyway, glad to see you're thinking about DNS alternatives. Rather surprising nobody has seriously proposed a solution / alternative since MeowBit and the Firefox plugin.
I just heard the advert on LRN about BipCoin so I came online to do some research and stumbled onto this.
Electrum v.2.5.3 pops up "Certificate has expired" when trying to send BTC - WTF
Man like I don't need this aggravation!
Went to pay my hosting service like I've done many times before and now Electrum pops up a message saying "Certificate has expired".
I get nothing else. I have no idea if it's Electrum's certificate or the full node it's trying to connect with. I changed the connect option from "automatic" to a specific server and I get the same error.
I did a google search with keywords electrum and certificate and found very little. One link was a guy saying he felt Electrum uses SSL rather insecurely.
What is going on, and how can I access my balance so I can make some payments?
I just installed version 2.6.4 and it produces the same error.

No I never found that info.
I got it installed finally. Debian is a bit different, requires a "sudoers" file in addition to the sudo group. Once I got that I did the install from my normal users account but using sudo and it installed OK, replacing the launcher's 1.9.8 with 2.5.3. Didn't have any issues sending after that.
The python install/setup script apparently has enough smarts to do things that require root as well as the things that don't and does the right thing for both. That's why it didn't fully work trying to install using the root account but does with sudo (path differences etc). Of course the install totally fails with just a normal user account without sudo.
Having trouble with the upgrade. It partially works but seems to have permission issues, probably due to python.

You should be able to tell me this idea in a few sentences.
If I cant figure it out, and I'm in the industry how the hell is someone from the public going to? Its not that theres anything bad. I just dont see where the focus for mass adoption is. That is what you absolutely need, and there is no doubt the music industry has way bigger potential than the porn industry for using crypto coins. But its not going to happen if artists, labels, and the public have to jump through hoops to do it. Right now its incredibly easy to buy music, or listen to it, or even take it. Anything remotely more difficult than the current methods simply wont happen.
I also feel you have it the wrong way around. THE PROBLEM with the music industry now is there is no filter down money effect. It now stays at the top. Masses of small, niche, and indie artists wont see a royalty check worth a damn ever. They are where your focus should be first. Getting them on board (which wouldnt be that hard) would then get their fanbases involved etc.
The point is the vast majority of music artists make next to nothing these days contrary to what the general public believes. So any avenue or possible means of income like this would be wholly embraced.
Then again to be honest it doesn't need what seems to me a centralized system which I gotta say is very complicated to understand for newcomers to crypto like me.

He does have a point regarding the target of the DAC promo campaign, that it might make for faster adoption if it were marketed to the artists rather than the fans. But why does he think that's not happening? I thought the OP was very comprehensive and dealt with EVERYONE equally.
The one thing this guy doesn't get is that the BitShares Music DAC is the very OPPOSITE of centralization. Perhaps he didn't read the OP fully or doesn't understand blockchain technology. He's here so there's still hope it will one day "click" and he will see how decentralized the BitShares Music DAC is, and even more secure than BitCoin's POW blockchain tech is.

Oh really? Let me hear you tell me "in a few sentences" how the electric grid works, or your cell phone, or nuclear power or ... blockchain technology. Why do you expect difficult things to be made so simple? It devalues the accomplishment. If it was easy to explain it would be easy to do and it just isn't.
And jumping through hoops is what we all have to do to play in the crypto world, at least to some degree. It's an evolving industry and convenience will come with time. Compare blockchain technology to the introduction of the Internet. How many years did it take the Internet to evolve to be user friendly and convenient. Darpa started the internet (ARPANET) way back in the 1960s. I began using it for email in the 1980s, and the WWW wasn't invented until the 1990s. So your microwave, A.D.D. short attention span, give it to me in a few sentences attitude doesn't sound very realistic IMO.
The guy may be right that it will take awhile to realize the design goals of decentralized freedom blockchain technology promises as long as we have to "jump through hoops" to participate in it, but it's gonna happen baby, count on it. The human race cries for freedom, and financial freedom is long overdue!

Thanks Tachikoma, it seems to run, at least I get the initial dialog to create a new wallet.Who knows if slowaes is really a dependency on all platforms. It doesn't seem to be, but you may hear more from me when I proceed through the GUI and create the wallet. I suspect slowaes has to do with key generation, but there may be several algorithms to do that, slowaes being only one.
As I said, stay tuned as I proceed through the installation.

Hey thanks for your replies. I heard a podcast regarding cold storage and that leads me to believe it's not a trivial topic to digest.
It's kindof funny really, the mix of info saying bitcoin "is easy" vs. "it's a deep topic". But then nothing unusual about that, typical of popular topics on the net these days.
It does therefore warrant caution, and to give myself plenty of time to discern and absorb the correct info from the fire hose stream.

I'm a btc newbie, trying to find an entry into all this knowledge. I'm a software engineer with decades of experience in many fields. That said I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed on this forum and am looking for some basic help.
In reading the "New to Bitcoin, Start Here!" sticky I clicked on the link for the question "How can I store bitcoins securely?" and wasn't able to find the actual 14 steps of the post's title, only the comments about it. Why is that? I went to the first and last pages but no luck. What am I missing, why is that so confusing? Did Vladimir create a "red herring" title to frustrate newbies like me?
