From Grok.........

If we assume a Bitcoin price of $90,000 per BTC on March 5, 2025, we can calculate El Salvador's unrealized profit based on its holdings of 6,100 BTC. Here’s the breakdown:

Current Market Value of Holdings:
6,100 BTC × $90,000/BTC = $549 million

Estimated Total Cost Basis:

As mentioned previously, El Salvador’s total investment cost is estimated at around $285–$290 million, based on an average purchase price of approximately $45,000–$46,000 per BTC for most of its 5,931 BTC acquired by late 2024, plus the additional 169 BTC bought between November 2024 and March 2025 at higher prices (e.g., $83,000 for the latest 5 BTC). Using the midpoint of $287.5 million as the total cost:

Unrealized Profit:

$549 million (market value) - $287.5 million (cost basis) = $261.5 million

So, at a Bitcoin price of $90,000, El Salvador would be up approximately $261.5 million in unrealized gains on its Bitcoin investment as of March 5, 2025. This figure could shift slightly if the exact cost basis deviates from the $285–$290 million range, but it provides a solid estimate based on the available data.

So in other words, you want the US to use taxpayer money to buy enough Bitcoin in order to manipulate the price of Bitcoin--in the same way the US has a strategic reserve of oil that they sell off when the price of gas gets too high.

A strategic reserve would give the US government the power to determine the price of Bitcoin. They could make the price go up by buying it, and make the price go down by selling it.

That's what you want? Seriously? Are you mad?

OMG! You’re STILL here spreading FUD?! Give it up, man! Temp is the man! Bitcoin is exploding because of his election! America has spoken loud and clear!

Those are default behavior of Bitcoin Core, so i don't understand why other node would determine it as a spam.
Ordinals are also allowed by "default behavior of Bitcoin Core", but they are filtered by some mining pools anyway.

data carrier: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/27043
bare multisig: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/28217

In general, if you make for example 1-of-20 multisig, then guess what: you need a single valid key, and the rest 19 keys can be used, just to push some data.

And in case of OP_RETURN, the 80-byte limit is no longer a problem, because there are pools accepting more than that. So, obviously, it is used as a faster way of spamming, because then, you can put your spam inside some output, instead of input (which is needed to put more spam, if you want to send a lot of short messages, because then, it may be cheaper than Taproot, if your data is between zero and a few hundred bytes).

Also, bare multisig can be used to slow down verification, and to increase the number of sigops in a given block. And both issues can be used, to get some advantage over another mining pool, which may be unaware of that, and include those transactions, and losing some time or fees by doing that.
This sounds like one for the Pro column. Will wait for any for the Con column, thanks!

Bitcoin Core source code provide short explanation about those configuration.

Code:
# Relay and mine data carrier transactions (default: 1)
#datacarrier=1

# Relay transactions creating non-P2SH multisig outputs (default: 1)
#permitbaremultisig=1

AFAIK it means,
1. datacarrier=1 allows you broadcast transaction with OP_RETURN.
2. permitbaremultisig=1 allows you to broadcast multi-signature transaction which use P2MS (Pay to Multi Signature).

Those are default behavior of Bitcoin Core, so i don't understand why other node would determine it as a spam.
Good question, and I’m watching for any answers.

I have a node connected to mine that has instructions in the User Agent field...............

"stop the spam on your own node, set datacarrier equals 0 and permitbaremultisig equals 0"

Are these valid commands? Are they safe? Do I want to enter them? What exactly do they do? What is the exact command to enter them if I do?

Thanks!
snerd

These instructions are suggestions to configure your Bitcoin node in order to amplify its security
Yes they are valid and safe

If you are going to enter the command with Bitcoin core

1. Open `bitcoin.conf` file (usually in `~/.bitcoin/` directory)
2. Add these two lines:

```
datacarrier=0
permitbaremultisig=0
```

Then
Save and restart your Bitcoin Core node.

Let me know if this doesn't work
Ah yes, the config file. I should have known that! I've been running my node on a Win11 machine, with the data directory on a separate drive, so the .conf I wanted was in E:\Bitcoin. Yes, it works as you stated, thanks!

Trump Jr. has announced that his family will be entering the cryptocurrency business:

https://cointelegraph.com/news/donald-trump-jr-launching-crypto-platform-take-on-banks

Although the details are still sketchy (which is how they do everything), it's clear that Trump is making a big push into crypto personally.

I have sometimes been called "alarmist" in these forums because I have made predictions about what Trump would do if he wins the presidency. I predicted that Trump would introduce a competitor of Bitcoin, and then use his control of the US government to prop up his platform and pass laws to denigrate existing crypto platforms like Bitcoin.

Well, it looks like my first prediction is about to come true.

Trump already has built-in excuses to come after Bitcoin: he promises to criminalize abortion in the USA, which will require the largest police state created in the USA since the Prohibition in the 1920s (which is how the FBI was invented, for instance). Since Bitcoin and other cryptos can be used to pay for illegal abortions, it will make sense that Americans should be forced to use his "trusted" platform instead of "untrusted" ones like Bitcoin. (And if that excuse doesn't work, they could think of a dozen more).

I would like people to think about what a Trump presidency would mean to Bitcoin and crypto generally.

Trump, a convicted criminal and somebody who has been found guilty of running multiple scams all of his life, will have his own business that competes with Bitcoin and/or the crypto industry, and he will have the full power of the US government to give his own company unfair advantages over competitors. And Trump has demonstrated, over and over again, that he will absolutely use the US presidency to enrich himself at he expense of the American people.

Do you want to compete directly against the President if the United States and his political party with your business? Then by all means vote for Trump.

Please, for the love of god, just stop! You’re a liar and a shill for the left. A national police force to enforce abortion?! Lololol

Re: Film industry attack on cryptocurrency
by
snerd
on 11/08/2024, 00:24:37 UTC
Bitcoin is constantly under attack from different sides, but so is free speech.
Do you remember how youtube was demonetizing videos that mentioned the pandemic, or used the word covid? How google was limiting your ability to search for crypto related sites?
Do you remember the smear campaign they launched to make people think bitcoin is bad for the environment?
Nowadays they're trying to put people who say something they don't want to be said in jail. For instance in the UK they want to make social media companies to police content and arrest people responsible for something that they call misinformation. This means that if you don't believe in the government narrative and express that in social media, you may be arrested. In other words, if we have covid and they say vaccines are safe, but you tell people they are not, you're going to get silenced.
Bitcoin is something they fear because if you hold BTC they cannot freeze your accounts and starve you, like they did to protesters in Canada. Protect your freedom!
This. Exactly!

Trump got on stage and told everyone to never sell their Bitcoin, raised a ton of Bitcoin from the community, then immediately sold them all to fund his campaign............

Re: All eyes On Trump As Kamal Harris Gives Up On Bitcoin Conference Attendance

While Trump is happy to take money from suckers who will donate to his campaign in hopes of special favors after he's elected, the "Bitcoin vote" doesn't exist in any significant quantity in this election.

This year's election in the USA is going to be about abortion and whether it should remain legal like it has been or whether it should be criminalized nationwide.

Republicans think abortion is "baby murder", and would do anything to stop it, including voting for somebody who would ban Bitcoin that's what it took.

Democrats see the abortion criminalization Republicans want as a fundamental attack on their bodily autonomy, and more practically speaking, the end of safe sex in the United States because there's no recourse if one's birth control fails--so every act of sex in the country Republicans want must necessarily consider the possibility of there being a baby. And most people aren't in the position to have (another) baby. So hence Republicans are basically trying to... outlaw sex.

So it's "baby murder" versus the end of sex. Compared to those stakes, Bitcoin isn't even remotely on any voter's radar.

Dude! Give it a rest! This is a BITCOIN

I think I’m still in shock that a President of the United States is going to speak at a Bitcoin conference. That’s extremely wild to me. I don’t think I would have believed that this could happen a dozen years ago. This cycle will either be the ultimate top for Bitcoin, or we could be looking at the future currency of mankind.
