Re: Finance Part III: Divide, Conquer, Enslave

The question is when will it collapse in a catastrophic way ? (if it doesn't evolve smoothly into something better).

[...] buy gold (for CA$H until a way to buy gold with BTC is found -- no shipping address...), and Bitcoin itself.
Some meatspace gold dealers accept bitcoins. If yours doesn't, they shouldn't be hard to convince.

I feel for all the wannabe traders who thought they could short bitcoin. I've learned my lesson a long time ago and have never been so happy to hodl and buy all the way down.

I still think it's a bull trap and we will see $400 again though.
Disclosure: i'm hodling so I couldn't care less about my own predictions.

Would self moderation contribute to the free expression of thoughts and ideas?

Do free-speech justify letting a communication medium be intellectually polluted by trolls and impertinent persons?

Is it really free-speech if what you perceive as trolls and impertinent persons cannot express themselves freely via this communication medium ?

Unfortunately I don't feel any pain because I'm ready to lose everything. I would not sell even if it goes to 0 (if it's based on FUD or political news).
I can only listen to my instinct to buy and want more. So... I'll buy when I feel that it is worth going all in with all the fiat I have left in the world. I can't put a price on this yet.

It's just awesome to see all the weak hands leaving the market.
I didn't think we would see more of it, but just looking at reddit and around here you can tell that more and more people are getting desperate.

And thanks for the analysis cosmofly, it confirms that I should wait a little longer before buying moar Smiley

Re: the China PBOC event explained
by

Regarding the rumors, my theory is that the exchanges dont want to close their businesses.

The PROC didnt outright say btc is prohibited and illegal. The reason is they dont want public outright and being criticized by the Westerns. They always want to be looked at as a developed country....I would call the banking blockage is a soft ban making btc unfeasible for its ppl and eventually would make btc negligible.

Hence the exchanges are most likely finding another banking network to facilitate btc trading.

And imo, for the average joe who buys small quantities, websites like localbitcoins are much more efficient than exchanges anyway (if they're not interested in day trading). The "black market" will just explode.

xiexie zhangweiwu!

Really, thank you for all the information you give us.
It makes a lot of sense and means the dip we saw today might just be the beginning.
It reinforces my thoughts that China will try to cripple bitcoin to avoid capital flight.

That's what Chinese do. They squat in the street to take a phone call or smoke a cigarette and it looks like they are taking a dump.

This would make for a great academic paper!

I'm starting to think there is a lot of low-hanging fruit that would make interesting research papers.  We need to found J Bitcoin.  This forum is useful for brainstorming and vetting ideas, but I think a lot of good work gets lost and forgotten in the noise.  It would be useful to publish highly-polished peer-reviewed manuscripts in an archival format accessible to everyone.

Yeah, I've been pestering my academic colleagues in economics (I am myself a prof. of chemical engineering) to publish a paper that addresses something to do with Bitcoin... but they either laugh or take the idea seriously, but the serious ideas they will consider is how to prove that Bitcoin is a bubble Sad

*sigh*

Haha, that's because nearly all academic economics are Keynesians and therefore a lost cause.

The bitcoin nutcases are scary people who should stay far away from power.
"Haha, education and all the academics are full of crap! Not that I have often picked up a book or finished college, but I saw a really kick-ass Youtube video, that gave me a strong feeling that it's all crap!"
The previous mentality is pretty common among the bitcoin nutcases.

It's my humble opinion, that the bitcoin nutcases are even scarier people then the Bolsheviks, because at least they valued education..

I have a PhD and I value education tremendously.

I just think Keynesians are fucking retarded. Have you ever read what they believe? Cheesy

I don't even have to read what they believe to know that they are retarded because in my book anyone who values humanity or society in terms of economic output and employment rate is fucking retarded, no matter what theory they believe in.

My first concern is storage. Where do you guys keep your stash ?
It's important not to keep all coins in one place of course, but I don't know of even one safe place to keep them.

That's the thing you learn when you own precious metals or Bitcoin. There is no safety, there are no 100% guarantees. Same is true with fiat, but it is so much easier to buy into the notion that your fiat is "insured" and "protected" Wink

So you have to learn to live with uncertainty. The best way to deal with that would be diversification imo. It is harder for a perpetual traveler, though.

With bitcoins I can at least encrypt my wallets / priv-keys and copy them on papers, usb keys, disks, cloud storage, emails or even on decentralized systems like freenet.
It's easy to send copies to my family and friends and also receive theirs. I am happy with this level of redundancy and security.

Thanks for your answer because somehow it's good too know that most holders seem to be in the same boat when it comes to precious metals; a boat that can sink at any moment.
I'll do what I did for bitcoin then, hold what I feel comfortable holding and potentially losing by taking the intrinsic risk into account.

I actually think that people underestimate the extent to which precious metals are now obsolete as a store of value.

When I think about bitcoin, I see where the value is, but when I think about gold, I really don't see it. So I, for one, do not overestimate its value.
I only buy precious metals because even though it's obsolete, I don't believe people will start discarding it anytime soon. It will take a while before it is replaced in the industry and in jewelry and stuff.
It's stupid but it's been considered precious for so many years (thousands!) that it must now be hardcoded in our brains. That will take time to erase.
So for now, I think it's still a good way to hedge again inflation (as long as the global monetary policy doesn't change radically).

I'm new to precious metals trading holding and there's a few things that bother me. I'd love to hear solutions from you guys.

My first concern is storage. Where do you guys keep your stash ?
It's important not to keep all coins in one place of course, but I don't know of even one safe place to keep them.
Home is fine for small quantities only, safe deposit boxes are too expensive (and I don't trust them), in the wild under a rock is inconvenient, etc.

My other concern is with traveling.
I don't have a home country and travel constantly so now that I have coins I don't really know what I'll do when I have to move abroad.
Selling everything for bitcoins and buying again is a pain and would increase the likelihood of getting scammed.
Exchanging all my silver for gold would make the stash much smaller which would be easy to smuggle.
But if I ever get caught they'll still think I'm a freaking mafioso...

Also, right now my stash is small because of these issues I foresee, but I would love to see it grow to $50K (to give you an idea of what I'd travel with (1kg of gold...)).

Thanks for you help Smiley

P.S. Could we have a poll on what would be a good price to by Gold (then another for Silver) ?

would be nice if the poll closed *before* the end date. At least by one day.
Also, 500-600 range. Wild guess: $555 on bitstamp.

April 15 rings a bell.

Anyway, it's most likely FUD.
1) use of "reportedly"
2) says "the central bank [is] noncommittal on the news"

ideas for new poll?

how about something like "has the news and trends this year changed your confidence in BTC?"

-Yes, I love bitcoins more!
-No, I don't change that easy.
-No, what news?
-Yes, running for the hills.
-buy
-Sell
-Hodl
-where can I get Bitcorn

just drop hodl already. Its way too lame.

Beside why make a poll thats just for jking around?

The polls here are completely useless (like most discussions, see: +1, +2, +3, ...).
I would like to see serious polls with answers that make sense.

O.k.    I decided to take some advice from 686f646c (as cautioned above), and I moved 9 BTC from BTC e to a Blockchain.info wallet.    It took me nearly a week to accomplish this BTC movement b/c there were technical SNAFUs with my e-mail confirmations to BTC e.  I thought that I had confirmed with BTC e via e-mail, and then after three days, my BTC were still in the transfer section of the BTC e fund.  Thereafter, I submitted a ticket and got some weird-ass quasi non-responsive e-mails from BTC e support, which made me suspect that the BTC e support English skills are NOT too good.

I then presented my issue in the BTC e troll box, and a couple responders reminded me to make sure that I adequately went through the e-mail confirmation process, which assisted me to identify the problem was that I had NOT properly confirmed.

Anyhow, now I am fixed, and I have removed 9 BTC from BTC e, and put those 9 BTC into a blockchain wallet.... which also caused me concern, yesterday, when blockchain.info was down for quite a long time (more than 10 hours?)

Don't forget to offline some.
