what's preventing you to pull a JD and just suddenly stop operations

You make it sound like JD did something bad.

No offense intended, obviously JD did something very right and I do respect your decision to close it down. But speaking in practical terms, a site closing down is not very beneficial for investors and I'm solely speaking in the investors' perspective, so I hope you understand. Btw I'm the guy that won the SwC poker tournament so I'm very grateful for how you & and deb were running things and organising these sorts of fun activities.

I would like to ask DiceBitcoin, which jurisdiction are the site subject to? I'm concerned because as an investor, what's preventing you to pull a JD and just suddenly stop operations, or even worse, being raided by the police for illegal activities and all bitcoins seized? Can you go into depth as to what procedures you have in place to ensure all coins are safe?

Hi guys,
As I was thinking of upgrading my GPU to the 6950 at some point (unless I;m told ny different),I'd b interested in how this card performs and how many Mhash/s this gives u and whether OC'ing is necessary (or how well n how far can u OC this card)

So gd luck 4 u in getting it up n running Smiley

I have a Gigabyte 6950 2GB. After BIOS flashing and running at 950mhz, it can do 405M/s. If you don't mind the fan noise you can overclock to 1000mhz without much problems, giving you around 430M/s.

To me it sounds like someone used a brute force program to break in.  Did you use the same PW on mtgox and the btc guild?  People should go through the code of these utilities to see if anyone snuck anything malicious in just in case.  Maybe some kind of key logger or something.

I used different pw for btcguild and mtgox. I'm now installing KeePass to store my passwords in.

I can tell you with full certainty that if anything was hacked, it was either at your email, or your computer itself.  Even if a security flaw were in BTC Guild's database, the hash retrieved for your password is strongly salted.  The salt cannot be retrieved without the person having shell access to the server, at which point they would certainly be going straight for the server's wallet, not users.  Even if the salted passwords were pulled from the database, they would be useless in trying to access another site like MtGox.

I'm adding a "Revert to Prior Email" option right now so you can force the server to restore your original email address.  I highly recommend you change your EMAIL PASSWORD if you haven't already.  Given the attacker hit multiple sites, that is the common weakness.

Thanks. I just tried changing my email address but the same message popped up saying I need to wait 24 hours, perhaps the feature is not yet implemented. Yes, I think you are quite right with my email being the common weakness. I've since resetted my email pw and added secondary verification through cellphone text message to be able to login. It's more likely that I've been hit by a trojan/keylogger, but seeing that I did not visit any dodgey websites, I guess that I've been attacked via IP.

I didn't see that warning when I reset my password from gmail.

I believe the attack occurred when I was using the computer, i.e. one minute I was logging in btcguild just fine, the next minute my password was changed. Both my mining computer (the one I believe was compromised) and my laptop were physically by my side.

MtGox is in the process of tracing my bitcoins now, I will continue to update this thread when I receive more info.

Check your account activity in gmail. At the bottom, it will say "Last account activity: XX minutes ago on this computer.  Details" click on details and it will show you the last IP's to login and when it was. See if you can find out any info from that.

I just checked and it only showed data up to 4 hours ago, and the IP addresses were all me since after I've recovered the password. The attack occurred about 6 hours ago so I couldn't get info on the attacker's IP.

I suspect that this will not be the end of accounts being hacked. Seeing as the hacker targeted specifically for bitcoins (changing btcguild and mtgox passwords), This is done by someone within the community. I only got a new SSD with a fresh install of windows 2 weeks ago, and since then the programs that I've downloaded are the miners, bitcoin client, and the various sites I've visited are all bitcoin-related, such as http://www.bitcoinwatch.com, http://blog.bitcoinwatch.com/ and http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/

I'm using Microsoft Essentials as my anti-virus, and I have not been going to suspicious sites (as far I'm aware). So the hacker could only get through to me through the above means. I urge everyone that visits the same sites or uses the same programs as I do, change their passwords regularly (and avoid using same username and email for sensitive info).

I'm just enabled the two-step verification process for my gmail account to require a verification code sent to my phone before I can log in - I hope doing so will prevent hackers to have access to my email which then they use to change my passwords for various sites. Those of you that have invested significantly in mtgox should do the same.

No, I did not use the same password on both sites, although both sites had the same user name. My first initial thought is that I have been hacked or keylogged, because whoever that did this cannot do this without access to my email username and password (he changed my email password).

My MtGox account has been hacked
by

on 15/06/2011, 08:24:59 UTC
This morning when I tried to login btcguild, it said my password has been changed. Same deal with mtgox. I also cannot login my email which was associated with btcguild and mtgox. I recovered my password and resetted it only to found out that my account in btcguild has been updated with a new wallet id as well as a new email, which is my original email with a 1 appended at the end (eg from xyz@gmail.com to xyz1@gmail.com). Luckily I had payout lock in btcguild which means payout cannot be allowed within 24 hours of a wallet id change.

I then tried recover my password in MtGox by clicking the forgot password option, but the hacker likely changed my email address therefore I cannot receive the mail to reset my password. I've filed a ticket to MtGox support but I don't know how long it will take for them to respond to me. I would very much like them to freeze all my assets on MtGox (worth thousands of USD) until I can regain access to my account.

I'm typing this to let everyone know that I've either been hacked or the security in btcguild and/or MtGox is not secure.

Edit:

I've been contacted by MtGox and they are now on the case.

    Hi,

We have located your funds. Unfortunately some funds have already been withdrawn ($1000 worth in bitcoins). We are tracking those funds as fast as possible.

    Thanks,
    Mark

URGENT NOTICE

When I tried logging in this morning to btcguild.com, I realised I couldn't do it. I then tried logging in mtgox.com as well with no success. I then tried logging in my gmail account which is tied to both mtgox and btcguild, and realised the password has been changed. I recovered my gmail password, which then I reset my btcguild.com password. When I log in to btcguild, I found that my email address has been changed (my prior email address with a "1" appended at the end of it, eg originally xyz@gmail.com became xyz1@gmail.com), as well as my payout address has been changed. Luckily, I had payout lockout enabled so the hacker could not retrieve the funds yet. As of this moment, I'm still unable to recover my mtgox account password. I've sent in a help request through the support forum to freeze all my assets asap and I'm now waiting for their reply.

I urge everyone to change their mtgox and/or btcguild passwords asap, there may be some security vulnerabilities in either of these sites or my computer. I'm not sure whether I've been hacked or what, but everyone please becareful.

edit:

I still cannot change my email address back to my original gmail account, because I cannot change my email address within 24 hours, that means the hacker could still have access to my account via the new email address to change passwords. eleuthria if you are able to read this please check your pm. I have sent you my account name. Please disable all payouts until further notice.

edit2:

The username and email I use for btc / mtgox are the same, although the passwords are different. The email also happens to be the same as the one used in this forum. I realised that I got hacked after I made a few posts on the bitcoin forums, I don't know whether the two are related.

edit3:

eleuthria, do you keep logs of the wallet ids that were changed? During the panic, I changed the wallet ID back to my own wallet without first noting down the wallet of the hacker. It would be useful to know the hacker's wallet id at least, to see if anyone else has been similarly hacked and had their bitcoins sent to that address.

Hashing difficulty does not always correlate with price of bitcoins.. as seen from the recent crash. But I think the long term trend of bitcoins is upwards with more and more mainstream exposure. The most important thing is gaining exposure, this encourages goods and services and start dealing with bitcoins, which then creates a bigger economy. Right now for all we know, the market is just being manipulated by speculators.

I've been running ufasoft on my work laptop for 6.5M/s over the last few days and I've mined a few hundred shares with it. Depending on which pool (eg deepbit with pay per share), you are guaranteed at least some pay. The way I see it is that any pay is better than no pay.

I think as a moderator of this board you should better inform the new posters, rather than just slamming them down with a simple answer.

Hi,

The most efficient CPU miner if you are using an Intel CPU is ufasoft:
http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3486.0

For ease of use, I suggest you to get the latest version of GUI Miner here:
http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3878.0

In GUI Miner, click on New -> ufasoft miner. Select your preferred pool and enter your username and passwords.

I suggest you to use the following flags for ufasoft miner:

-v -t 2 -g no

This specifies that you will use 2 threads (1 for each core), and forces no gpu usage.
You should now be getting significantly higher hash rates than using CPU/RPC miner. Although, using a CPU to mine is much more inefficient than using a GPU. I recommend getting a budget ATI card (5830/5850, which is hard to come by these days) to pull in 100x more hash rates than what you would be able to achieve.

If you found my tip useful, you could donate to the following address: 1EfUBS19MnWELQ8xKgqy1ic7A4DUzZonvg  Cheesy

Happy mining!

I bios flashed mine to 6970, and run it overclocked at 950Mhz, but only get roughly 350M/s. What drivers and miners / command lines do you guys use?
