Re: Mining in the refrigerator?
by

I watch a lot of Breaking Bad and Gustavo Fring uses these refrigerated trucks to distribute methamphetamine around the southwest United States while submerged in buckets of ingredients for the restaurants which he uses as a front for his drug operation. Imagine getting one of these refrigerated trucks and setting up racks and racks of cards/systems within the refrigerated box portion of the truck.

I realize that running the truck 24/7 may be costly in terms of fuel, but I've heard that..... there's this car.... it runs on water, man!

EDIT: Now that I think about it, as the result of a recent face off, Gustavo Fring is currently no longer using these refrigerated trucks, so acquiring said vehicles may be a viable option after all!

There are a lot of places you can get the riser cards from ebay so it won't be hard to get good cheap risers.

Thanks for the info. I've always been interested by the idea of getting some risers to save a lot of money versus buying whole motherboards for the sake of extra PCI-E slots to squeeze more graphics cards on board. What's the story with the extended ribbon cables? Is the idea to just rig up the graphics cards just any old way they can fit inside whatever case you're using them with?

Checked the website and your motherboard doesn't have the card to switch around like mine does. I also noticed that your board doesn't have a 4 pin molex on it for extra power...I don't know if this could be the problem just an observation. Do you have any x1-x16 riser cables? If you do you could try the x-1 slot and the main x-16 slot and see if that gives good results.
Thank you for checking into this for me. No, unfortunately I don't have any riser cables (can you recommend a good source? I'd like to invest in a few.) and in terms of power, the connections from the PSU to the cards should suffice. The PSU is equipped with four PCI-E connectors: two 6-pin and two 6+2-pin connectors all together.

PCI-E Slot problem

Wondering if anybody on here might be able to help me out with a problem I'm having with the bottom PCI-Express slot on an ASRock 770DE+ motherboard. I bought it as a budget board for a mining rig since it has two PCI-E slots. I'm using two 5830s in this rig, but only one of them will show up anywhere in the Windows 7 environment. That is, GPU-Z has only one card present, CCC also lists only one card in its hardware tab. Even the device manager lists only the one card under display adapters. Now here are the facts I've confirmed:

1. Each card will work in the top PCI-E slot, no matter which one I switch into it.
2. The PSU is a 650w Apevia that, while may not be a high-end PSU, has supported two 5830s in another rig no problem before.
3. The current rig is a single-core Sempron CPU with a single SATA hard drive, two DDR2 memory sticks, and the 5830 cards. The PSU is by no means overworked.
4. With only one card in the bottom slot, the system will turn on, and the POST will beep several times, and nothing appears on the monitor, which goes into standby.

I do not have the cards connected with a crossfire bridge, but I never use one with mining rigs. I'm hoping there's some adjustment I can make to the motherboard or the BIOS to enable the bottom slot. Is there anything I can do here to bring this second slot online, or is it probably a dead slot?

What is a women?   Grin

I read about it in books and stuff before and oh my god when I look at pr0nzoes I see things that make no sense to me whatsoever!!! My dear sweet lord, I see such strange things like men with inverted jennie-tulls and enlarged nappled-milkbags that remind me of far distant primordial memories of nourishment that I vaguely recollect but cannot be sure if it was real or just a long-lost dream. Such strange, unfamiliar-ness that I cannot understand.... OMG WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN.

Well nice job on having dates!

The only dates I have sadly are the sparse few times a month when my personalities convene to discuss hot-button issues, developments on popular television series (breaking bad is a current favorite) and, inevitably, critique and compare what amounts to be a pathetic round of stand-up comedy bits, hour-long variety show concepts and song-and-dance routines.

Re: exchanges requiring photo ID??

I did see that tier 0 on mtgox requires no photo ID to withdraw up to $1000 USD per day, but how exactly is that done? I know I can't use dwolla, which requires an ID no matter what. Anybody know the trick to exchanging BTC to USD without the ID bullshit?

Yeah, you just log into mtgox and use bank wires to cash out.

edit: I found the ABA/routing option for a US-based account. I'll see what the deal is with this option and if I can get away with a withdrawal without forking over an encyclopedia of my entire life's information, data, account and identification numbers, pictures, and favorite color in order to exchange BTCs for USD and transfer that into a bank account.

Shit. It turns out that ABA transfers require a 2000 Yen transaction fee, roughly a $25 charge for every transfer. This is not good at all. That's too much of a chunk to make it worthwhile for myself and plenty of others I'm sure.

Does anybody know of any service aside from mtgox that offers relatively small-time users a free, or at least a nominal-fee exchange rate (ideally < 1%) and a relatively safe method of taking the currency exchanged from BTC and transferring it into a US-based bank account? I used to be able to exchange BTC to USD on mtgox for next to nothing, then mtgox to dwolla for either next to nothing, or nothing at all (can't remember exactly at this point  Huh) and then dwolla to bank account in 2 days flat, again for either next to nothing, or nothing at all. What I do remember is that what I lost in that process was, in total, absolutely negligible compared to the principle sum. All I ask now is a similar way to exchange my hard-earned BTC to either USD or some gold, silver or copper-based currency, basically anything that would be very liquid in its ability to become USD. Maybe I'm completely missing the boat here, but if somebody could fill me in, it would be greatly appreciated.

I've also considered skipping all the big-brother bullshit and going down the SR route, achieving my means and ends of BTC to USD (or any liquid asset) but as I've been out of the BTC scene for a few months now, as my previous posts have noted, I have unfortunately forgotten my way down that particular road. If anybody would be good enough to send a private message guiding my way back to a certain Silk territory, that would help me knock this issue out in one fell swoop.

Now, to those of you planning on replying with the advice that I should wait for a severe lightning storm to come along, grab my ankles, and hold my ass in the air in order to zap! and magically gain access, please spare me the agony and the ecstasy. Thomas Jefferson may have founded the great United States of America by flying model rockets with keys attached in thunderstorms, one of which got struck by lightning, the current of which rode the exhaust plume back down to Jefferson* and relayed the words of the Declaration of Independence directly to his brain, but I do not wish to go to these lengths to achieve access to that which I desire to gain access to. Plain and simple.

Again, many thanks to those with the patience to help me out in these matters. It will feel good to finally be back on my feet again and not a complete and total newb.

* Luckily for Jefferson, John Aaron was at the console on this fateful day and made the legendary call "Flight - try SCE to AUX" which luckily saved the day. This earned John Aaron the coveted designation of "the Steely-eyed Missile Man"

Thanks for the responses. I guess my next question is, by providing my photo ID to a site like mtgox which is pretty well established and legitimate, as far as that goes, is this a relatively safe thing to do? Or am I seriously putting myself at risk for a breach of my identity?

Assuming it is safe, then by providing all this information to an exchange, am I responsible for reporting what I exchange? God help us all when a 1099-BTC comes into existence.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, do I have to worry about all the potential big brother issues that come from my identity being tied to where and what I exchange, or is it simply to combat money laundering and therefore nothing I need to be worried about?

exchanges requiring photo ID??
by

I've just started using BTC after a few months and I notice that mtgox now requires a photo ID (passport, driver's license, etc) to withdraw any currency to either bank accounts or dwolla. This was never the case in the past when I had used mtgox to exchange BTC to USD. From what it looks like now, all exchanges are mandating this. Is this in fact the case with all exchanges now, and what is the reason for this requirement? It's been a few months since I've used these services, so anybody who could fill me in on this, the information would be very much appreciated.

Because of the subject line, I had initially thought that this thread would be a complaint about trying to build a mining rig with a raging erection. How it might get in the way, knock things over, etc.

I do not want to buy something because I know it's few.
I do not want to sell them because I have confidence on them.
I do not want them to be just held in my purse neither.

Can I place them somewhere else to increase the value?

thanks.

Gee I don't know, buy a bullet, and rent a gun?!?!

Re: Solo Mining - Tracking Stats
by

on 05/04/2012, 01:46:27 UTC
Accepts and rejects are not quite what I was aiming for, because my miners may be at 0 Mh/s and I would have no idea. I'm after something that can broadcast hash rates in real time.

Also, the 2500 Mh/s was just thrown out as an example, but that doesn't sound implausible as a solo hash rate.

Solo Mining - Tracking Stats
by
st4rdust
on 04/04/2012, 00:14:57 UTC
I'm wondering if there's any way for a solo miner to keep track of stats, like one would have access to as part of a pool. For example, if I had 5 machines each contributing 500 Mh/s for a total of 2500 Mh/s solo effort, and I wanted to pull up a quick stat page on my smartphone while at work and away from the miners to check and make sure that the hash rates are where they are supposed to be. Is this something that is possible to author for a solo mining effort?
