Calculate if your mining rig will make profit based on start date

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ahg4c_1PnrADdHRUOWw4RzRIeWdJeVhlU1VIdGxsX0E&usp=sharing

Shows the raw profits based on what date you receive your mining rig. Useful for people who have pre-orders and can anticipate the arrival date of their machine. Variables for bitcoin price, difficulty, hash rate, and power consumption. The accuracy portion is still being worked on.

Spreadsheet based on user LuckXIII's original estimate.

Re: Insane Prediction for difficulty increases
by

It could be some miners are hoping for a breaking point.. ie, it becomes so HARD to mine that MOST miners get out leaving only a hardcore group and eliminating some of the difficulty.  I for one do not think difficulty will continue to climb.. eventually it will go down and only those few left mining will reap any rewards..

It will climb for a while but its not going to be +33% forever.  It will eventually stabilize to a sustainable number.

I think you are absolutely right. Some of the forecasts around here get to insane numbers not realizing how much hardware would be involved in gaining such astronomical hashes per second.

The current BTC price requires new money coming into the system at a pace of 100 million dollars ++++ year. That will not happen

So why doesn't BTC just implode right now without this 100 million coming in every year?

I don't see any problem here.

The British Lung Foundation is a fine and upstanding organization.

+1

OP, you can't be recommending we get off the lung transplant list so you get yours first. Not fair.

@ 100 USD per BTC = Difficulty 240,000,000

Net profit over 1 year: -0.58 USD

@ 150 USD per BTC = Difficulty 368,000,000

Net profit over 1 year : -5.46 USD

Maybe at that point people will keep their mining rigs turned on in the hopes that eventually BTC will appreciate in value past $150. I don't think people who get mining gear from ASIC/BFL will turn off their hardware unless they are loosing a lot of money. You just don't chuck your $2,499 machine into the closet on a loss of 50 cents. People will foolishly keep hoping while it continues to get worse.

I think you should rather use 25-30% in your calculations. ASICS are coming fast now, and will skyrocket the difficulty.

Yes, but not monthly.

The difficulty increase in percentage staying the same means that the average increase has been the same.

Lets illustrate this:

Difficulty 10m. For illustration, lets say it is 10th/s (I know that is wrong.)

Hashrate increase of 10%, increase 1m. 1th/s
Same hashrate comes up: 11m, Hashrate 11/th/s with a 1th/s increase. After 2016 blocks, difficulty is increased by 9,09%.
If you suggest a cumulativ increase of additional percentages, you need to think about the costs. 360 million is RIDICULOUS. I have written about this before.

You would have to add the total hashrate of June to accomodate October increases. Just think about that. Then you would do it again, and again. Adding the current total network hashrate several times over, with increasing the increase absolute number every time.

I would agree that a cumulative outlook is nearly impossible.

Major problem with solving such a situation. If all the manufacturers were to suddenly flood the market with their miners the difficulty would go crazy and the market would just implode from confusion. I respect BFL's method of sending off their early mining rigs to a variety of patrons. Also, once they do pick up production it would be good to steadily ship products rather than all at once to avoid market disintegration.

Isn't bitcoin itself gambling? It could be all gone in 10 years or it could be really successful.

Heard about the new bitcoin currency last year but didn't really take it serious until earlier this year. Mining when the BFL product ships, which might be when I'm gray.

Email verification and captcha. Perhaps even a more involved captcha that would interpret math word problems.
