You can try

Replace MYIP with you ip or network address.
I did have rpallowip=127.0.0.1 wouldn't work. I changed it with the public IP and it worked! Damn me. Thanks.

So, i downloaded, compiled and run bitcoind 0.9.2 on debian stable.
bitcoind is run under 'bitcoin' user.
there is a ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf file containing
so i start bitcoind, and then i try to interact with it like:

It's strange cause this setup used to work until the previous bitcoin version, or the one before it. Any ideas what's going on?

Still connects with 1.9.7 on Linux.
One point worth noticing : since some time now (don't remember version), electrum client doesn't connect to a single server, but to more. That's for getting block headers and notify the user if a certain server lags some blocks. In that context I don't know if it worths connecting to a hidden service, since your client will further connect to different "normal" nodes.
Observe :
Of course your subscriptions will be sent to the hidden service you selected. Don't know. I guess it depends on your threat model.

I did set up the server from scratch. I'm using the newest db verstion. I've also setup the hidden service, and seems to work. Check it out : TCP : 56ckl5obj37gypcu.onion:50001
Side note: With cgminer up an running this Linux is using ~55-60 MB RAM and it looks like there is no swap file used at all. Guess the SD card will last much longer than using Raspbian wheezy... 
finally got raspbian to work with cgminer. it takes only 33MB of RAM. Nice post though, thanks.
Weird, I have 2 USB 3 hubs connected to my Pi, working perfect (8 usb miners running from it, 1 ztex fpga, and 1 bfl fpga)
what distro and what hub if i may ask?
