Re: Great Giveaway from Cointelegaph and Sponsors!

I love to gamble, and a chance to gamble for free is great!

Thanks

I'd rather not gamble but bet on sport with betvip - seems easier. Besides, 2BTC sound better than $30.

I've checked THIS and it does not seem very difficult.

The closer the contest last day, the easier it is to predict the top five teams. Today seems to be the day to play.

Makes sense, playing at betvip.

What the chances are that the teams will stand as they are?

Just voted - after you vote, it shows how the votes stand.

It's good to know if you participate just before the contest ends.

Thanks for telling me this! It sort of gives the late voters an advantage.

Hm, I checked and it makes much more sense to vote right before the voting ends, better chances.

Last. and better, chance to win today. I'm taking it.

Check out THE NEW DATE the contest ends.

encourage me to work better by paying me
paying me more is the only encouragement I like

Sounds reasonable...

A small tip: when making your prediction, don't forget to include a link on your Facebook or Twitter share. This way we can pay you faster. If we aren't able to check this information, we'll pay to another participant who is closer than you.

Hey, please let us know who won! It's time we knew who gets the prizes!

Damn I was close.
They've got the WINNER

PSA: Coinbase declines services to Tor users.

Was at a bar sharing a pizza with a friend one night. This friend of mine has had interest in starting to get into bitcoin. I was handed $100 and asked to purchase bitcoin for him. Later on I then place the order for the amount of 0.2 bitcoin from CoinBase. I have purchased bitcoin from CoinBase many times in the past with no probems. Though this time was different. With CoinBase one has to wait a week for an order to be fufilled. It was a week later when my friend was expecting his bitcoin to arrive, is when I found the nasty gram in my inbox from CoinBase. CoinBase notified me that my transaction was cancelled. The email read "Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel this order because it appears to be high risk. We do not send out any bitcoins on high risk transactions," This made no sense to me, as it was only $100 worth of bitcoin I was purchasing and had a good history with CoinBase. And so I asked CoinBase why my transaction was cancelled. Their reply was that my order was cancelled because I was a Tor user. I found this frustrating, offending. It was bad enough that I had to wait a week just for the order to be fufilled, only to have that order blocked by CoinBase on the last day of the waiting period with no explanation why. On top of that I had to explain to my friend that his order was delayed. I was also offended that I was considered "high risk" or "suspicous" just for merely being a Tor user. This is why I am never doing business with CoinBase again, unless they can reverse their stance on Tor and privacy enhancing technologies.

Mike Hearn is also the guy that is proposing to build blacklisting into Tor, as well as reduce the fungibility of Bitcoin with built in taint tracking and rejection.

What is wrong with a tor node wanting to block something going through their computer and network? It is their connection you're using and are under no obligation to forward any traffic to you in the first place while they risk themselves, and you're still free to use a different node.

This is what you can do if you have a central bank.

Right, that's why no currency from a country with a central bank has ever collapsed. Stay by the phone, the Nobel people may call at any moment.

Re: Charlie Shrem Pleads Guilty - What do you think?
by

But bitcoin isn't money. How can he plead guilty to running a money exchange, when the IRS has ruled it isn't money. He was only buying and selling a virtual property. Do we need to start arresting people who buy and sell high ticket items like wine or cars?

You're confused. The IRS said it's a property, but their opinion doesn't matter when it comes to regulatory issues. The various departments of the government are under no obligation to treat bitcoin the same.
It's stupid, but that's reality.

bitcoin could just be bought by longterm wealth investors and be completely hated/ignored by the general populous and it would still succeed..

Re: Why Do People Believe Bitcoin Will Replace Fiat?
by
superbd
on 30/08/2014, 20:34:25 UTC
Resource wise, it isn't. Those old batch systems are orders of magnitudes more efficient on a per transaction basis than bitcoin is. A lot of this has to do with the rewards system of bitcoin, which encourages miners to keep adding on more hashing power even when there is already astronomically more than is needed to run the network.

When VISA for example gets enough processors to run its network it stops adding them because there is no reason to keep piling them on, bitcoin miners on the other hand keep right on adding because they want higher returns. Bitcoin's reward system incentivises mining inefficiency. The network could be run on a few old desktops at its current transaction volume, but instead it's being run on untold amounts of ASICS with huge processor farms chewing up money and energy to keep going.

Are you paying those costs, or are they?
Mining isnt about processing transactions, it is about fairly distributing coins and preventing anyone from cornering the market.

Re: How do you multiply with 1BTC capital?
by

Just imagine you have $600 (which is an unfortunately small amount to "multiply"). Transaction fees and other costs guarantee an investment of $600 will likely have a lower risk-adjusted profit than if you had more. I can't imagine BTCjam or Havelock return anything close to 8% after defaults.

Re: Coinbase Insured
by

on 30/08/2014, 20:06:16 UTC
Interesting. It's good to see Coinbase setting the standard here. Of course, employee infidelity and hacking are just two ways that bitcoins could disappear.

What about physical theft? Summary says that the insurance covers losses due to physical security breach, so presumably physical theft is covered. Missed that in the summary.
What about natural disasters, fire, flood, etc.?
What about kidnap/ransom/extortion of employees?
What about lawful confiscation (usually not covered by policies)?
What are the actual limits of the policy?
Are the limits on a per-account basis (like the FDIC), per occurrence basis, or per policy period?
Was the policy designed to cover the type of hacking that allegedly occurred with Mt. Gox?

Actually, Circle is setting the standard. They've already been insured by marsh - coinbase is catching up. circle is getting ready to haul past coinbase

Don't agree. In my opinion the bitcoin banking will have the "chaotic foundation" and regulative banking system with this type of foundation never makes you bored.
