I had pretty much an identical experience. I found out about BTCT and BitFunder at the same time. BTCT account creation was much smoother and I was a little put off about having to sign up with a second service for BitFunder, so I went with BTCT.

I picked "syncretic" way back in 2003 when I was choosing an irc handle - I flipped the dictionary open to "syn" and found it almost immediately - it was originally in reference to my musical tastes but I find that I generally try to live a syncretic lifestyle. My username on reddit is /u/syncretic2, because I deleted my original account in a fit of rage sometime last year Tongue
