But these Vega cards are sooooo expensive!  I will be sticking with the 1080ti's for the foreseeable future.  How long will it take to see ROI with the Vega's?
we don't care for ROI. We do it for the glory!

Ledipaa, Your calculator is wrong. Two rx on eth in dual with dcr currently gives ~$90/month. While unstable working Vega 56 on monero ~85.

power used for 2 rx on eth with dcr  vs power used for 1x 56 mining monero

  I see claims with 140 watts for 2000 hash on vega's doing monero

I know 2x rx 470's 480's 570's or 580's will use more then 140 watts

so form factor a good board could do very well  with vega 56's

I have this board on order. comes on monday

seems really good to run 4 vega 56's with endless spacing for cooling

but right now I am almost all nvidia mostly because of a few more coin choices

do you have the link for this?

the ones I can find on taobao.com are those with embedded cpu

What’s the general consensus on building a new Vega rig @ today’s rates? (Card price vs earnings)
Yes no wait never  Huh

Never say never, but currently IMO price/hashrate ratio isn't in favour of vega. RX 470/480/570/580 gives better results.

even for monero?

Sapphire RX Vega 56 sold by NewEgg.com on eBay w/free shipping:  $419

I have 2 such cards. They can't work normally with 950 MHz HBM overclock... Should I maybe rise HBM voltage?..

no wonder they are so cheap.  Huh

I mean, for rx580, I know some prefer sapphire or msi because they tend to have slightly higher hashrate (after bios mod) than other brands.

if there isn't a obvious difference in hashing power, I'll go for the cheapest ones

I have to ask. how did you power so many gpus if they need 6+8 pin ?

PSUs only have 8 6+2 connectors so it's limited to 4 gpus. even dual PSUs supports up to 8 gpus.

unless your GPUs only use single 8 pin connectors?

I live in a dorm that has untraceable power consumption and since I over pay for the low quality of it I'd like to have fun and tinker with Mining

Currently I have a GTX970 with I7 5280k....it hasnt been rebuilt since moving here. COuld I mine when not using it then keep it as my gaming computer when I want it?

If I was to invest in mining what would be a good set up taking into account energy efficiency is irrelevant...infact with winter coming may need the inefficent power plant to warm up my room

Personally, I think in your situation I would start using winminer right now and figure everything else out as I go.  You can download it and be mining in about 5 mins.  Very easy, you are paid in USD, you can stop the program anytime you want to game.

From there, I would start looking around for used gear.  Once you get past 2 cards it gets bulky and cumbersome.  Because you need so little as far as cpu goes, you can find a cheap old Athlon or Dual core and just add cards.
What would be some of the highest output to purchase cost GPUs? I was hoping there would be some powerful ones that go cheap because they are power hogs

perhaps vega56 and mine monero.

I have a few rigs with more than 4 Vega 56 in them

No neighbours have died though.. sad..

What are you mining with those?

Currently these are the stats for the 6 vega 56 card rig:  ETH: 262MH/s @ 1150W, XMR: 10000H/s @ 1100W (probably I can go down to 1000W)

These stats into whattomine --> ETH: $10.25/day, XMR: $11.67/day  ($12.01/day @ 1000W)  If 6 card HBCC were supported then $13.56/day @ 1000W

Currently I'm staying on ETH, but considering change to XMR

Eth + Dcr

I don't know how you can get 262mh, my cards don't hit 40mh each, most hover around low 30s with default bios/settings. Though i have to profess I haven't had time to tweak much. More concerned about getting more machines up.

Haven't look at XMR, but might explore once I clear my backlog and start tweaking.

I'm more interested if we can migrate out from Windows to Linux as I can't get the nix drivers working after the 4th card, boots into Windows with 8 just fine

Vega 64 bios mod. The best i can get with stock bios is 39MH/s.

best i got is 43-44... Used to be 44mhs

1. Do you have blockchain drivers?

2. Reflash with default bios, or try a bios created by other people. If the problem is still there, then maybe a problem with your card.

yes I am using blockchain drivers

i can't reflash the same bios onto it. i dont think there are 3rd party/modded bios

vega64 hashrates plunged for no reason? Please help

I'm experiencing some weird problems with vega64 and the registry mod (https://www.reddit.com/r/MoneroMining/comments/74hjqn/monero_and_vega_the_definitive_guide/) I used the 1100mhz registry mod for a while now and every 2 days or so, there are large areas of artifacts that appear on the screen but it only appears on 1 window/software. If the window is minimized then maximised, the artifacts disappear.

Did some research and I realised I should have kept my HBM temps low but I kept focusing on the core temps instead. So I set the fan speed to a min of 3000rpm as per the link. even then, sometimes it is hard to keep temps below 82-84degC.

The gpu clock was lowered to 1220mhz instead of the usual 1400+

then things started to get weird over the last 2 days.

1. all the status leds which should have lit up since they were under load but only 1 led lit up despite the card hashing away. then i noticed every now and then, rest of the leds started flashing as if the gpu load was rapidly changing between 0 and 100%

2. a few hours ago, the temps became slightly lower at 72-77degC despite the hashrates remaining at 42-44mhs ( I was watching some videos on the same pc)

3. hashrates started to half, at 22mhs and temps were much lower, about 44degC.  Restarting the pc didn't help, reapplying the registry patch didnt work. cleaned out and reinstalled the drivers didn't work either.

but the mem clock speed was set to 945mhz for some reason and it was hashing at 40+mhs? but when I raised the mem speed to 1100mhz, the hashrate dropped to 21mhs?
and now the status leds work fine!

Got my 3 x Vega 56, with original BIOS, doing 1800 H/s (XMR) @ 160W each. Total system on the wall: 570W (cause iGPU is active)

The system is stable, mining non-stop.

64 bios only helps to increase power consumption... unless you use the Soft Power Table at Windows regedit. This method, way more complicated, will push the V56 to stable 1880H/s with slightly less power (560W for 3 V56).

Wattman Settings (Blockchain Beta driver):
-30% GPU Frequency;
950 HBM Frequency;
Fans at 3500 - MAX (Ignore core thermals. What you need is to have the memory below 70º to keep the high hash rate. An undervolted gpu will be fresh enough to not auto raise the blower speed, hence not cooling the memory. At 25ºC ambient temperature I needed 3500RPM set at min speed);
Power Limit -20%.

Globaldrive settings (Blockchain Beta driver):
Crossfire disabled;
HBCC on, at max memory available (I'm with 16Gb RAM).

Important note on HBCC:
Every restart, every time you unplug the monitor/dongle, every time you simply turn off the monitor, HBCC will get disabled and hash rate will go down.
I recommend having an HDMI Ghost/Dummy Dongle like this. It's way more efficient than a monitor 24h powered on.

When accessing the machine remotely via team viewer, go to Actions > Log off Settings and disable the windows log out on team viewer session end. The log of will not disable HBCC but the next log in will.

XMR-STAK-AMD settings (2 threads / gpu):
Code:
"gpu_thread_num" : 6,

"gpu_threads_conf" : [
    { "index" : 0, "intensity" : 2016, "worksize" : 8, "affine_to_cpu" : false },
    { "index" : 0, "intensity" : 1600, "worksize" : 8, "affine_to_cpu" : false },
    { "index" : 1, "intensity" : 2016, "worksize" : 8, "affine_to_cpu" : false },
    { "index" : 1, "intensity" : 1600, "worksize" : 8, "affine_to_cpu" : false },
    { "index" : 2, "intensity" : 2016, "worksize" : 8, "affine_to_cpu" : false },
    { "index" : 2, "intensity" : 1600, "worksize" : 8, "affine_to_cpu" : false },
]

If you can't have the above settings working stable...
-Do a Clean Install of the Blockchain Beta driver (Clean install on AMD's setup screen is enough)
-Activate HBCC for all cards;
-Apply Wattman settings;
-Start with 1012+1012 intensity and make it stable. That should give you 1600 H/s;
-Then raise it to 1512+1512 intensity. That should give you 1700 H/s;
-Finally, push it to 2016+1600 intensity.

by chance I saw the reddit link and guide so I tried it out and my results are a little different. I used the "1100MHz HBM @ 905mV" reg file and this is what I got.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uq3Om2MXOE

notice the voltages for the core and memory are different from the youtube video by oldcomer?

so far, the highest hashrate for eth is about 43mh/s but my lcd is connected to this card with other software running as well. so this might have impacted performance.
hwinfo shows gpu core using 68w, mem 21w
I manually changed the p7 core clock to 1221mhz in wattman

Could be a reason if you run any other software. Not sure that hwinfo shows the right information about, use any Watt meter device at your power cord is better. One important hint - use the OverdriveNTool version 0.2.1 beta - it has direct access(press right mouse button at the tool) to the powerplay area in the registry, so you can adjust some values directly(after that reboot the settings are active) - you must start this tool with admin rights to get access to the registry. Have fun.

thanks. I am aware that these software tools are not accurate but it's not an issue for me as i wasn't using this pc to mine. it;s more like my gaming/regular pc that I use for benchmarking/testing various bios

I mean, I mentioned the part about voltages because I tried a different registry file than the ones posted in the link and just wanted to see if anyone had the same settings as me, any stability issues others might have encountered.

I have no idea how some reach 43.5mhs. I tried the steps listed on the reddit page, overclocked it to 1100mhz but I still get 37mhs.

every single time I try to set 900mhz as core clock, it adjusts itself to 902mhz. I have to enter it twice for it to be at 900mhz exactly.

Well you didn't stated, what algorithm, or currency are you mining,
but I suppose that your gpu clocks are set  uselessly high.
Try to lower clocks behavior then.

i;m mining ethereum and using claymore 9.8

just before i saw this reply, I let the green screen remain on while the display timer went off again then now it's showing the miner once again?

random blank green screen and high power draw?
by

on 23/08/2017, 14:28:22 UTC
I am running 5x gigabyte rx580 aorus at stock speeds 1340/2000 iirc on a 1250w psu.

every few hours i get a random blank green screen of death. i have no idea what happened before the green screen appeared as the automatic screen off timer would have kicked in.

Also I noticed even though i am running just 5 cards, the power draw on the wall plug is 1310-1320w? isn't that too high?

full system specs
biostar tb250btc pro
kingston 4gb ram
pentium g4400

it's mining ethereum only on claymore 9.8
