Wasn't it "Willy the bot" at MtGox that drove the price that high?

I read this 'rumor' too, about the 'willy the bot' thing.

But I remember watching the chinese buying bitcoins.

The chinese influx drove bitcoin up, I think

I watched the action at bitcoinity.org in late 2013

Never underestimate the power of the chinese. Seriously a billion people suddenly being introduced to something has a big effect.

If bitcoin goes mainstream, all the current problems will disappear. It will become like fiat, just a digitized version.

Re: Bitcoin as a catalyst for the next biological breakthrough.

Ive never really thought about it that way. There is a huge amount of processing power behind bitcoin. Though the problem is that a lot of it is in ASICs, so unless biology has to do with solving hashes, I dont think it will be extremely effective.

Re: Does it take significant skill to "analyze the blockchain"?
by

We see reports of police and experts "analyzing the blockchain", usually related to thefts or investigations of some sort.
Does it really take significant skill to "analyze the blockchain" or perhaps it's that human tendency to over-complicate things so 'experts' can (for example) create new income opportunities and consulting businesses?

In general, do you think it takes significant skill to "analyze the blockchain"?

The blockchain is as transparent as it can be. An expert would be someone who fully understands the bitcoin protocol its inputs outputs address and hashes. So the gov would basically hire a bitcoin fan miner programmer to do the "analisis"

Maria

Yes, I think it has mostly to do with tracking transactions, so understanding how bitcoins move and its unputs/outputs would be important.

Re: the usage of Bitcoin now
by

What's the usage of Bitcoin outside the mainstream of the application such as in black market, gambling and pornographic dealing? I think all the applications above can make sure that the hard currency Bitcoin will not die, however, the true value of it should be shown after it stepping into the mainstream of the application.

It's very hard to estimate what all those transactions means. In fact I think it's impossible, it's a mix between trading, speculation, buying of goods and services... all those transactions that get done in person for cash will never have any meaning unless you are part of one of the 2 parties.
As decentralized exchanges start being operative, it will be even harder to track anything.

How is this the issue of tracking? We dont track individual bank notes to check the usage of fiat. Instead we should analyze the growth of vendors that accept btc.

Bitcoin has a long way to go. Its still in its infancy. There is going to have to be a big change in society an attitude toward technology before it truly gets a foothold.

Unlikely. Until we get a united country of earth and there is a big movement toward unity, I think fiat will remain a strong entity and also symbol of each individual country. Fiat is simply too entrenched.

I dont think they have the power to take bitcoin mainstream. Taking bitcoin mainstream would take a change in society, not a signle organization.

Yeah agreed. True change will take time and change in not only social constructs btu also attitude toward technology. Patience.

Yeah its tought to say bitcoin is a thing. Its a digital entity that people have attached a value to that is used a currency... Though that argument can be made for a lot of things, including usd.

Yeah I feel like people are often too uptight around here. How about we just have some fun and forget about the whole "take over the world" thing

Re: Small Block
by

There are actually blocks that have no transactions included. I think the payout then will be only 25 btc as there are no miners fees given to the miner

Do you have examples of these? I cant imagine why there would be no transactions unless they were very early blocks.

Re: whale club is a joke

Pro tip: Whales don't join clubs. It's minnows who school.  Wink

Tongue But people like to brag, talk about their investments, and form clubs. Even if there are people with a respectable amount of BTC to play around (that's what it is, after all), they don't have to be very smart investors or anything.

Exactly. The true whales know their power and dont need any special clubs to realize that. This is only for those who feel the need to validate their skills.

Re: Did Satoshi expect Bitcoin to last this long?

I think satoshi was like any inventor, passionate about what he did. Did he think that Bitcoin would last this long? That's under consideration, but he certainly hoped so. I can't imagine someone inventing something and interacting with it the way he did and just giving up.

Re: Does Bitcoin Has What It Takes To Replace Fiat?
by

Future citizens will be divided into two categories:

- Those who fully understand how modern money creation works, they use bitcoin
- Those who don't, they use fiat money

Currently the number of the people in the first category is about 1 in a million, hopefully with the help of internet it will increase by 4 times per year

I'm not sure I understand your point.

Are you saying that people who understand how bitcoins work will use it because of its potential?

Or are you saying that fiat is corrupt and bitcoin is the better solution?
