Can you give a brief explanation of the temperate issue that is being discussed, does the miner really need to run at a minimum of75C ? Also an outline of the algorithm that SmartSpeed is using would be very instructive?

Thanks

Rich

About temperate:

Next Cgminer software will adjust the default target tempature to ~68-70C. 75C is safe but a little high (too clost to the cut-off tempature).
Also, taget tempature can be set by user in next cgminer update.

About smartspeed:

This is a very complex system, partly built in the ASIC. Will add new algorithm in software side to optimize down clock and under voltege
condition later (may not finish in next update). But fully disable smartspeed is not recommend (will course a very high DH% and lost
20-50% real speed), so there will not a "DISABLE" switch.

ng

Thanks for the information it's great to hear that you are planning an update to down clock the A6!

I know it's a long shot but do you have any theorised, tested or project numbers around the down clock?

This is the email I'm talking to Yan on Sales Account <sales@blockc.co>  Or do you want a transcript?

Yes Smiley if you could copy/paste it.  I (and I think others) would be interested reading it in whole.   As there has not been a ton of info on "The smart speed" and were still really learning about it.

With underclock I think it sounds like we need to find a way to get around it, or disable so the more we know the better.

Alright transcript  below:

Most graphics cards run at 90 to 100 c. 75 c is the core temp of the chip.  Ambient temperature and core are very different

75 degrees wow that seems quite high? Is their a design reason for this?

So what is the max temp range for the hash boards before they start to risk blowing up?

Can you confirm that it is planned in a future firmware update that we will have control over the fanspeed ie be able to turn off smartspeed?

Bad news team - I've been in contact with BlocC who said that smart fan speed is integral to it's operation and I doubt we'll have control over it :/

I hope that you are wrong and that true under volt + down clock  is available.

It was available on the avalon 4.

But if you are correct  then these will never work as well as I hoped for.  I am glad to have the 2.  And I will now consider more options.  I may get a hosted s-7.

I'm hoping the same his time is odd at releasing info.  Getting info at Saturday night is just normally not the time they would be sending out support info.

Who are you talking to at BlockC bonez?  Can you post email or picture of email?  The fact you spelled BlockC wrong and time you posted just does not give me ton of confidence in your info.

Lol it's Sunday I'm a bit hungover Tongue

I'm talking to Yan in the sales dep Sales Account <sales@blockc.co>

After asking if there is a firmware update in the works where we will have full control over the fanspeed he said "The smart speed is very important.  The reason the fan control works the way it does is because the chip needs to run at 75C for optimal efficiency.  When it gets too cold you get a high error rate.  If you want to verify just set  your fan to min 80% and your hash rate will drop to about 3.0T"

I also asked him about the ambient temp being so high and he said "Most graphics cards run at 90 to 100 c. 75 c is the core temp of the chip.  Ambient temperature and core are very different."

That shouldn't prevent underclocking. It should be able to slow the fan down sufficiently - or even stop it - to reach 75C at any reasonable frequency/voltage. Am I missing something here?

Please post email Bonez so we can see exactly.  I'm still holding hope that someone will be able able to find a way to underclock.

I feel like were getting half of the info.  But I could be wrong.

This is the email I'm talking to Yan on Sales Account <sales@blockc.co>  Or do you want a transcript?

Hi everyone

First i want to know this forum is amazing and second thing is i have some question before i start mining.

So im new here and i had just listen and see tutorials and see people who write on their blogs about mining also i have read to much about mining so before i start mining first i want to buy 10 Avalon 6  which are 3.5THs i think for me is good start but before i buy i wish to know some question from you

so i get this link to buy avalon 6

http://zoomhash.com/collections/bitcoin-asics/products/avalon-6-3-65-ths-shipping-from-stock-in-us

i think they are good with this,  also i need to know what kind of other things need to buy to complete everythink from parts  but i need to know how to i connect 10 avalon 6 with one computer or on same place to start mining cuz i want like everyone want to take all bitcoins on one place so first of this i wish to know which website you recomande for me to register on it and to connect with my avalon's and start mining also what kind of speed of internet need for electricity and for temperature i dont have problem i have reseloved this i hope someone to help me about this thank you very much.

Hi! We are glad to assist you on getting started with mining. We can provide you a checklist of what are the equipment you may need and at the same time we can provide you quotation of our best offer.

Has that checklist been posted somewhere on the forum?

Really it comes down to you either buy some S7s now, or wait a moth or two till the next price drop/new model. If your going to buy now, do it. If not, wait.

Or you just pass on mining all together.

"Now pick up your skirt, grab your balls, and lets make some money" "Your gonna pass? The only people I see making money passing are NFL quaterbacks and I don't see a number on your back" -From the movie Boiler Room, one of my favorite.

Now adding this movie to the 'to watch list' haha. Massive Pats fan from downunder!

There is currently a lot of debate around the future difficulty and the block halving which is taking place in July (block reward is changing from 25 to 12.5) so people are unsure about the real returns in a years time. Check that you calculator takes these things into account somehow! I am not too familiar with calculators yet so I'll leave that to someone else to discuss.

In regards to electricity prices if you have a business you can always get cheaper electricity from your retailer. I just remembered this tbh! I'm going to start my own sole trader business to get cheaper electricity at home.

The thing is just be smart and realistic about it, try and get as much info as you possibly can! Then make an informed decision my friend!

Wow.... This is really disappointing to have read all this.
I'm just now hating myself for being so naive.

That's probably more than 2 months on mining on this pool for me. Fml.

My first scam on the crypto scene. And boy my butt is sore.

Can someone take this pool off the Bitcoin wiki page.
U know they really should only put verified or trusted pool operators on the the wiki page.

I wouldn't of been suckered into this pool if that was the case.

Dammit I'm still cursing.

Its a shame...

I threw some hash at this in the beginning because I liked the website.    and just like solo mining ... you take a chance...

after awhile I quit because of trust issue... but was hoping that a block would be found and it would turn out to be a legitimate pool so i checked the website once in awhile to see if someone had found a block.

I only lost hash time for my miners,

I feel for the people that probably were buying hash power and its a shame that this did not work out.

Good call! Officially listed pools should be vetted more or at lease have paid out some people before being allowed on the page.

Or have a verified and trusted tag next to pools or something similar.

Both of you guys I have advice for:

DO NOT GET INTO MINING.

It's a waste of god damn money and electricity at this point. Do not be fooled by the guise of money printers.
Mining sucks. I used to mine before the ASIC came into play as well as afterwards with the S1 miners.

Needless to say you will likely never break even unless you either have free electricity or you manage to mine with them for a bit and sell them to some sucker here on the forums for some ridiculious overprice..

I know mining seems like a good idea on paper.. Its not. Its's shitty, hot, loud and basically fruitless. These I learned first hand.

Well if you are only focused on ROI sure BTC isn't a get rich quick scheme.

I'm getting involved because it is the most geek fun I've had in years and am learning a shit tonne about different things. I love learning and want to back BTC into the future that's why I'm here.

Hey Mate,

I'm a newbie as well and have been looking at Avalon 6s actually really favorably to the s7 as a home hobby miner.

if you are looking at 10 i would contact blocc.co directly they are the world wide distributor and have probably supplied zoomhash. Reason being that they sell a 10 pack at a much cheaper rate - http://www.blockc.co/collections/bitcoin-miners-shop-avalon-blockc-co/products/avalon6-bitcoin-miner

10 for 13,900 and they will throw in the RPi controller for free (zoomhash charge $75 i think)

You will only need one RPi controller for all 10 A6's

You will need PSUs for all your rigs which could be expensive - BlocC has PSUs they can sell you just ask the sales staff (the rate imo is good!) BUT I would wait for the guys on this thread to test the undervolted PSUs if you are considering running these ever at a lower hashrate but higher effency - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1257327.0

I'm waiting on these guys atm! They seem like good people who know their shit and have taught me a bunch in the last couple weeks.

For pools I would go with Kano's pool https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=789369.0

Pools is a massive debate in itself but read this topic to get an idea of the 'behind the scenes' dealings between pools and the debate about what's good for the BTC network - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1085800.0

This topic convinced me to never mine on Eligius or the bigger PPS pools like Antpool and Discus Fish (And I feel dirty for giving them my hash now)

But if you are just after the BTC and making ROI asap you may have different priorities in choosing a pool.

BTC mining from my knowledge doesn't really require a fast internet connection but a reliable one so you should be sweet!

hope this helps! super jealous of your 10 units!

Yup definitely waiting for your results before I decide anything!

I just wanted to plan ahead on whether I try to get a PSU and PDU in the states or I try to source one back home in NZ just unsure what the best plan would be.

If  you need a PDU order it online.  I owe phil for pointing me onto this.  But you will find much nicer and lower priced PDU's on ebay they you normally will at local stores.

I got a PDU online and it was nicer then local stores had, and I paid much less with it being used.  So far it's worked out great for me.   If you need a PDU find a good deal online and order it.  The PSU like you said we will know more on Tuesday when phil tries out his awesome PSU.

not only the pdu on ebay I got that 358 usd retail psu on ebay.

so I paid around 225-250 on ebay for about 600 in gear.

those pdu's were really good deal.  30 amps 240  volts  built in over load fuses cheap.

If I really knew what I was doing I could  access them from a smart phone to do a hard boot. from anywhere in the world.

this was the pdu seller http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=thenighttech&ftab=AllFeedback

he sold me 2 of these for http://www.ebay.com/itm/Server-Technologies-Sentry-Switched-Cabinet-Distribution-Unit-PDU-CDU-CX-8H2C211-/140824045552?

45.00 bucks!      one of the best purchases I have ever made on ebay.  I turned notlist3d on to them  he got 2? can't remember.

as for the meanwell psu.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/MeanWell-Power-Supply-Rsp-1500-12-/191732204742?   I offered him 110 he took it.

That looks like a couple amazing scores! My problem is location aka being at the bottom of the world shipping is often more than the part I want to buy off ebay haha

Have had enough time to get a general idea of speed on certain frequencies.  This is with a Gold EVGA SuperNova, if you have Platinum psu you likely will be a little less.  And it's on 110 so again if on 240 a little more more efficiency.

It is pretty close on efficiency no matter what freq you choose. Above is not perfect but a very good general idea from a few tests. But you are able to lower frequency if for some reason you wanted to run on a smaller PSU.  But as of now running it at default of 500 on frequency seems like best idea.

On underclock likely it is going to be input voltage that makes it possible.

I will try:

13 volts
12.5 volts
12 volts
11.5 volts
11 volts
10.5 volts
10 volts

with this psu

https://www.trcelectronics.com/ecomm/pdf/rsp1500.pdf

and this one

https://www.trcelectronics.com/ecomm/pdf/hrp600.pdf

my gear is due on tues the 24th

If I was wanting to start off running one of these and then add on one or potentially two with the option of undervolting when desired would it be worth it to get a serious PSU upfront or just buy ATX PSUs and as needed?

Well no one knows if this gear undervolts well.  So looking into good  psu's that drop volts like the meanwell  is fine but if you buy one and pay a premium for it and the gear does not volt well at 10 volts or 11 volts you will be pissed off.

my 1500 watt meanwell runs close to 358 usd and it does 10 to 13 volts.  so far I have not found  the s-7 to allow undervolt (does allow over volt)

just wait until tues.  I will set gear to freq 400 and drop volts to 11 see what we get.

Yup definitely waiting for your results before I decide anything!

Nice review and the more I am reading the more I like the Avalon6 over the S7.

Much prefer the single piece heatsink to the mini heatsinks that the S7 has.
Just 2 hash boards with a clean symmetrical layout, must be better for cooling than a 3 board layout.
Connectors out the back, and only 4 needed much nicer.
Looks like it will run to 4TH with a little bit of overvolt which is quite easy with Server PSU (Much easier than undervolt)
Hopefully the A3218 is more stable than the BM1385 and we are not going to see silly batches.

However  Smiley 3.5TH/s for 995W is 0.284J/GH is bang on spec but not as good as S7 with 0.25J/GH

So big decider for me is how well will it undervolt & underclock with it's auto setting algorithm? Hope you and Phil can make some measurements and see how low in volts it will go and to what degree the J/GH improves?

Rich

I'm thinking the exact same, liking this more I look at it.

And thanks guys for putting this up.
