Re: How to spot fake or forged wallet.dat?
by

Hey everyone. Recently I found a unique method to spot fake wallet.dat files.
Wallets can be faked at least in 2 ways.

1. By changing the iteration number of the hash itself (I'm still looking how to spot fake iterations. The probability that a wallet have fake iteration inserted in wallet hash is kind of low).
2. By changing public key with a key that has amount. (My method will spot this type of fake)

The method is entirely created and developed by me. After  months of investigation, I can spot with a precise level : 99.9% fake wallets that does not have private key, or have a wrong one mapped to public key. Unfortunately there is a very big business with fake wallet.dat, that's why I am willing to help people that are looking for forgotten password of wallet.dat. Also I would like to discuss with more wallet crackers, in order to develop cracking knowledge and share our experience.

Still no-one answered me.....
I would really like to understand what you mean: So you are saying in 2) that someone can change the public key inside the wallet to one that has a balance - so even if you crack the private key it won't open the wallet - as it not the correct key pair?
So when opening such a wallet in bitcoin core - would i see the correct public address? OR the fake public address or both?
if the public key showing a balance is fake, surely there would be recent transactions?
For example a wallet that only has transactions from 2015 would not be fake right?

Re: Wallet encryption bug found (IMPORTANT!)
by
thelema93
on 05/04/2022, 19:04:40 UTC
A serious bug was been found in the "encrypt wallet" function of bitcoin versions 0.4 and 0.5: private keys may be left unencrypted in the wallet.dat file after encryption.

If your encrypted 0.4 wallet file is stolen, an attacker may be able to recover some or all of your private keys and steal some or all of your bitcoins.

The development team has been working on fixes for bitcoin versions 0.4 and 0.5, but it will take at least a few days to test them thoroughly. Until they are available, you should assume that your 'encrypted' wallets are as vulnerable as an unencrypted wallet, and follow all the best practices for keeping them safe (see here for a list).

It is embarrassing and astonishing that this critical a bug was not caught before the 0.4 release; constructive suggestions on how to improve the testing and release processes that do not assume access to hundreds of thousands of dollars of funds to hire security consultants or QA teams are welcome. Getting sufficient testing of code BEFORE it is released has been a chronic problem for this project.

Hi Gavin.
I just saw this post of yours! I happen to have found an old wallet of mine which I lost the password to to which I think was created with version 0.4 or 0.5
So I have a question: How could I search for these unencrypted private keys in my hex editor? Would they have the 0420 byte prefix? OR are they in some other format? How do they appear? Many thanks in advance.

Looks pretty suspicious or a joke. Having a hard drive with 400 million dollars, instead of finding the best masters in reality, he goes to the forum to ask... Are you the author? gkelly 15Z5YJaaNSxeynvr6uW6jQZLwq3n1Hu6RX https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=24346.0 Make a complete copy of the hard disk (image) and upload it here and we'll see what you can do  Grin

Just tell me please if you were in the same situation, caan you trust someone with your hard drive ?

I have done lot of research (ur shit reality), All of them are saying keep the hard drive for check and come back later !!  lol like dealing with an idiot.

So you have a wallet.dat file but you say it is corrupted. In what way? How do you know it's corrupted?
Personally I would try to get the disk recovered and make a clone of it.
Next woudl be to look at teh wallet.dat and see how it is corrupted. In what way. There might be parts that can be repaired.
I can also help you with this.

Are you saying that Bitcoin Core will open these fake wallets and they will show balance? Can you explain in more detail how that is possible?
How can we check to see if it's real or not?

If you have your key file and an idea of what the password is, I can also help you. I am currently working on some multibit classix wallets and have access to some very powerful GPU rigs. So anyway, the first thing you should try is to import the .key file and see if it is even encrypted at all. It might not be!
It will ask you for a password if it is.
Multibit classic didn't use 12 wallet words back then, so that's probably for something else!
I can bruteforce it for you if you want?

Re: Don't buy "wallet.dat" files with lost passwords; EXCHANGE THEM.
by

Well.. There's a reason why people would let go of those files, and that is bc they have deemed it useless so I don't really see the point of this.

It's either op has actual wallet.dat with funds and private keys in it but it was too difficult to crack or that there's something wrong with it like having no private keys so there's no way to spend those funds. If it's the former, then those two also applies to the one you are gonna be exchanging with...

Are you saying that it's possible to alter a wallet.dat file to remove the private keys and it will still open in Bitcoin Core normally?
The reason I am asking is because I am currently attempting to crack some wallets and as far as I am aware, if I can open the wallet normally in Core, then it must be crack able right? or am I missing something?

I often have funny discussions with family members about Bitcoin. Last night I spoke to my brother about - in his words "Bitcoin crashing".
So I showed him the 3 month time frame chart and pointed out that the price is UP 83%.
He got a confused look on his face.
I also told him that now would be a great time to invest as the price will almost certainly go to new all time highs in the next few months and it probably won't drop any lower than 7000 approx. He looked worried.
Well they say you can lead a horse to water.....

The MCO token price is sinking.

The project is in trouble with all its CRO hype.

Many investors are selling and moving on to other crypto even though they made huge losses.

Failed CEO Kris Marszalek and his Monaco "team" should be ashamed of themselves.

What nonsense is this???!!!!

They just announced they will ship all across the USA very soon. They are currently taking shipping addresses to post out cards to US customers.
This trashy FUD is pathetic. PLEASE stop polluting this thread with garbage.

They should seriously create a web version of MCO app because I still can't update my mobile app to a new version.
That's why I would prefer web-based wallets than mobile apps. The web wallet can be used from both PC and smartphone. Moreover, they are more secure as for me, but you may disagree with this

MCO cards are due to start shipping before October ( in Q3 )
I have been following Monaco since the ICO and I only have good things to say about them. A rock solid team with great management, good communication and they are pretty much on schedule despite what you might read.
I just got given 50 referrals for friends - each one gets $80 of free money on their cases when they sign up - no strings attached.
Seeing as I have only  maybe 10 friends who’d be interested, I’m offering the referrals to anyone here who might want a card. You can apply for any card, even the free one and you’ll get $80 free!
This is not a scam!
Anyone I interested just has to pm me your phone number because to send you a referral you have to be in my contacts list. Don’t worry I won’t start calling you! I’ll judt delete your number after.
Pm me if interested

Are you saying that this project is good just because it has a decent referral system?
Ok, let's say it turns out that Monaco (Crypto.com) is a scam project, is it still that good for you? What about those people you referred, will you be the one responsible for what happened with a project for them? It is just an assumption, I am not stating it is a scam, but you cannot say they are a great project and a solid team without trying their cards firstly, it looks like you were paid for your opinion

Lol!
Are you serious?
I have been following them since the ICO.
How long have you been following them?
Do you read all their q and a sessions posted on reddit?
I have read every single one.
I have also spoken with Kris the CEO on discord and asked him questions.
They are the only Visa approved program manager that has been given the go ahead to release a crypto related Visa debit card.
The cards have been manufactured. Right now the app is fully functional and the cards are undergoing a final update which Kris said was necessary due to some issue they had with chip & pin. No big problem.
I am totally confident that the cards will ship in Q3 as promised.
I didn’t come here to defend from this FUD nonsense anyway.
I genuinely wanted to use my referrals because yes I’ll get a small kickback too.
Not sure why so many people are hating on MCO.
Your going to look pretty silly after the cards ship and they have millions of users.

"Bitcoin sucks by the way. It is slow, it can cost $20 to send some, people spam it and kill the network all the time. Even doge is better."

This was true a few months ago.
The latest Bitcoin Core 0.16.0 has segwit by default. Faster, and low fees.
I'm not sure how anyone is paying $20 fees now?! you must be doing something wrong. I regularly see payments worth over $10,000 and the fee is less than 50c. The days of high fees are over my friend.

Nano is great tech. But also now Bitcoin is geting faster with Segwit being implemented by Coinbase and GDAX.
Combine that with Lightning Network rolling out soon too. Also Bitcoin Core's next version will have Seqwit by default too.
But hey, Nano's interesting too.
