Can I get some beta testers for a new S3 firmware please? Download link is here, it *should* be good to go but as you know....

Rolls back to the last good patch in Oct (1024), but fixes voltage adjustment and the important reset button. Hopefully.... let me know.
Link works for me...  will try as soon as I've plucked up enough courage!!
S320141219.bin installed and, so far, everything looks okay. Have we, at last, got working stable firmware?..  let's hope so.

In Jan next year my electric costs go down 10% and with bitcoin value creeping upwards it looks as if S1's will again start to earn their keep. At the moment they are just breaking even so effectively l get free heating. I'm happy. I only ever did mining for something interesting to get into.. and if l earn from it that's great. No other interest l can think of gives me a return although l stand to be corrected on that!

The best fans for my S3's are Corsair SP150 performance edition blowing in and Enermax UCMAA12A blowing out. The Enermax are not PWM but have a choice of three speed settings. I use the lowest 1000rpm setting. The S3 temps hover around 48-50C at ambient 22C and are a rock solid 440Gh at 218.75 Mhz, very quiet too. For lower temperatures I use Thermalright TY-143 both ends, not so quiet but easy to live with and the S3 temperature drops to 44-45C

Like many other mining enthusiasts no doubt, I have migrated from S1's to S3's and now have S1's gathering dust. So what to do with them? They are undervolted and lowered frequency using 150watts at 128Gh. Running costs are £0.50p per day each. They run almost silent. l intend using one per bedroom to warm the room up and maybe point them at a solo pool..  you never know your luck or l could stay with my usual pool and then the running costs drop to £0.10p per day.

As an aside I have 6 S3's all providing heating. It's winter here in England with outside temperatures ranging from 0 to 10C. One S3 is in the shed to keep the place from freezing, 3 in the lounge hidden in a corner..  the temperature there now never drops below 22C..  and 2 in my study which keeps it comfortably warm. Fan noise is not a problem having replaced all fans with much quieter ones.

Smiley l took your advice and ordered the Thermalright TR-TY143...  Just out of interest I'd like to add that I think discussions about temperatures on this forum are a little over-hyped. 50C is a perfectly acceptable temperature for an asic to run at. Note that the menu shutdown temperature default is 80C. I worked for a computer manufacuturer and regularly changed ic's using hot-air guns where temperaturers attained hundreds of degrees C during the process and it never caused problems. You'd be surprised how much abuse ics can take. It's over-voltage kills them, not overheating.

My S3 is running virtually silent now. l replaced the stock fan at the front (the end with the network connector) with a Corsair SP120 fan blowing in and removed the rear fan entirely. The fan is running at 1920 rpm with 48/48 temps, ambient is 23C.. S3 is overclocked to 225. Maybe won't work so good in hotter countries but here in Uk with summer over should be okay for the next 6 months

yes, my measurements were made at the wall and I'm using a Corsair G550M power supply.
I'm just a little disappointed that l cannot achieve BITMAIN'S spec figures.
At freq=225 I'm getting 420GH/s and 354watts

What with the difficulty level and the current value of bitcoin every watt saved helps.

any ideas if updating my S3 would improve my GH/s vs watts?...

My current measurements are:

Freq   Gh/s   Watts
*********************

100   200   166

150   300   250

200   400   336

218.75   427   350

225   450   389

250   500   450

The watts per GH/s all seems a little on the high side.

l purchased my S3 secondhand and believe it's a first generation model
and has never been updated...  also are there any thoughts about undervolting
the S3. l note from the BM1382 datasheet reducing supply volts by just 0.05v reduces
consumption by 25%+ without affecting the hash rate.
