Update June 26, 2013

The Tennessee Grand Jury has voted to Indict. The indictment paperwork is in public domain, so finding it should be easy. Obviously I won't post any details or comments about this for now.

I wonder if is Bitcoin the most disruptive technology out there or is there something more affecting our lives. I want to know your personal opinion on this.

If you are interested leave here a reply with you favourite disruptive technology(s) and you can add your view of it.

Please try to post something different than Bitcoin  Smiley

So you're an author of sci-fi books?  Huh Wrote anything good?

Explanation: The word "cyberpunk" originally referred to a certain dystopian literaric genre as well as the small circle of authors defining the genre.

Then.... bad things happened and suddenly the term "cyberpunk" was applied to anything and everything most definitely related to pretty much everything BUT cyberpunk, like people with spiky hair and glowy clothes surfing the matrix inside the computer. That's not cyberpunk. That's glowy people surfing the matrix.

Sorry, my fault  Roll Eyes No, I am not author of sci-fi books, except the one which I was hesitate to release even for free (it was silly)

Now I look like an ignorat, gonna delete this thread.

Re: Floppy disks viable for wallet.dat storage?
by
tpantlik
on 20/06/2013, 08:37:52 UTC
Every major storage medium has a flaw in it.

  • Hard Drives are known to fail randomly. Also it would be ridiculous to have a 1TB hard drive for only 1MB of data.
  • Flash Drives are a nightmare when it comes to reliability.
  • CD-Roms are known to "melt" over time, after ~10 years they might fail. Also inefficient to have a 700MB CD for just 1 file.
  • Paper wallets are perfect, but many power users don't have a printer since it is becoming an outdated device. Also some printers may "save" the data printed making it unsafe.
What are the flaws with floppy disks and how do they compare with other storage mediums? Price is not a factor really since you can usually find some disks and you can get the drives for $1. I would enjoy using them because they feel more firm rather than paper or a cheap plastic flash drive.

Dude, never heard of SMART before?

What about backup media? CDs/DVDs made for purpose of backup, costs a little more but can survive hundred years. Combined with some redundancy.

And what about LTO tapes? DAT tapes?

And even encrypted clouds???

And floppies? These are good for this: http://youtu.be/16vcIUY_bAE

EDIT: And the ultimate #1 storage: human brain  Cheesy

“There are a lot of amateurs in the market, I call them cyberpunks, they don’t understand currency or finance or even how governments look at currency,” said Kremen, adding that government analysts “are confident that cyberpunks are using anonymous money for criminal purposes or tax evasion unless they are on the fringe, believing virtual currencies to be the next Gold 3.0.”

So, if you are considering yourself a cyberpunk(er), you are a criminal. It remainds me the confusion of public with term "hacker", bended by dickheads in USA to scare their sheeps. It is all over again, this time it is aimed (probably) on cryptography. USE IT!!

I think that govts. could be angry on their central-bankers-overlords. So there is always this possibility that Satoshi was made by govt to get rid of them. But somtehing says to me that Satoshi is made on cypherpunks roots so the mysterious anonymous creator pretty fits into cypherpunks thinking.

This is true. I've seen all bitcoin related service suffer the same fate in the last few days, including Rugatu, and I don't seem to understand what is the purpose of this sustained attack.

The purpose is to kill off Bitcoin as a currency and as a community.

What if the mafia or criminal enterprises are finaly looking on Bitcoin as a tool for their shady financial activities. They want some coins for testing so they DDOSed and manipulated the price down, so they can bought a lot of them for cheap.  Cheesy

Almost every major Bitcoin website has been under DDOS attack over the past few days. It’s becoming a real problem, not just for the exchanges. It is also opening up other vulnerabilities.

Installing defensive tech (like cloudflare) is not enough. Isn’t the Bitcoin community supposed to include some of the best hackers in the world? We should set up a bounty and take the fight to whatever botnets are trying to mess with Bitcoin.

As long as attackers can get away with it for free, attacks will continue. Let's just readjust their incentives a bit  Wink

I suggest setting up:

0. Reward for proving that there is a real attacker
1. Reward for whoever can identify the source of the attacks
2. Bounty for taking down (with prejudice) any major attackers

Considering the potential losses for major Bitcoin businesses if these attacks continue, I’m sure pledging a few coins each for this would be worthwhile. It might also be a good project for the Bitcoin Foundation...

DDOS could come from anywhere – about a month ago there were DDOS attacks on Czech internet banking sites, biggest search engine seznam.cz and some institutions sites. It lasted a FULL WEEK! Now the investigation come to results that those DDOSs comes from NORTH KOREA! Now tell me how you can find who is behind attacks and how do you (legaly) fight with Chinese or North Korea governmet, or Russin botnet operators with contacts to mafia. Hell, I can even imagine that this could be the work of CIA or some other shady organisation.

Fight fire with fire is not the answer, we can only make more exchanges so the attackers cannot DDOS them all. Or just use local/face2face exchanges.

Also if I remember it correctly the Gox is using Prolexic as an DDOS protection and it is used also by big banks around the globe. How is that possible that DDOSers were so succesful? Did the mass histeria and crowds trying to connect to Gox help them?

Why yes, they have. They purchased Bitomat after it collapsed because the servers crashed and Amazon couldn't do data recovery because it was in the cloud. So yes, they are well aware of cloud services.

I'm not even sure where to start.

You think that if a server crashes 'in the cloud' that the data is unrecoverable?

You don't think that the particular people at Bitomat might have just not known what they were doing?

'In the cloud' isn't some magical meta-space where things don't exist and the data is unrecoverable, it just means the machines are somewhere else and you can programatically request more of them, for you know, like, proper load balancing.

This stuff has been figured out like 10 years ago buddy MtGox just don't know what they are doing.
LOL, I think that Maged surely know this stuff  Cheesy But anyway did you heard of Linode?
