Re: Where would society be without the internet?
by

on 05/02/2016, 18:24:32 UTC
The internet has made my life as a graduate student so much easier. Research takes about a tenth as long as it did when we had to sit in the library and dig books off of shelves. Now I can just look up articles and download the pdf!
However I think the internet has also made people nastier in general. It makes me sick to see some of the comments people put on the internet while they hide behind their electronic veil. It is easier to stalk people (facebook, anyone?) and to ruin someone's life (identity theft, hacking).

Society wouldn't be the same without the internet, but I think we would be fine. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if infrastructure crumbled and we had to go back to small societies and self-sufficiency.

I'd love to see Assange get hung out to dry by an American court. Not because I disagree with him. But because it's always satisfying watching someone with a messiah complex get a dose of reality

[2016-02-05]In Defense of Bitcoin Transaction Fees
by

on 05/02/2016, 17:55:39 UTC
Bitcoin does not need to scale. While Satoshi Nakamoto might have arbitrarily designed a 1MB  block size into the Bitcoin protocol with little explanation, many industry people forget that, just because that amount was arbitrary, does not mean the protocol must scale now or ever. The people who feel this way – in what essentially represents a conservative approach to the debate – have been shunned completely in the discussion known as the Bitcoin block size debate. Not scaling is not an option.

This is a great error as it obfuscates the real debate at hand. The reality is many Bitcoiners believe a conservative approach, even if that means no block size increase, is not preposterous. I am not saying it must be the answer. I am saying it is one possible answer for the multiple choice question regarding block size.

[2016-02-05]UN Commission Calls On Caribbean to Become Digital Currency Hub
by

on 05/02/2016, 17:54:59 UTC
The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has published a report examining digital currencies and how they can be used to address regional payments issues.

Written with the aim of providing local policymakers with a balanced appraisal of the benefits and risks of digital currencies such as bitcoin, the report examines the use of the technology in the Caribbean and discusses the broader context of its emerging use at the global level.

Notably, the paper recommends further exploration into the technology with the ultimate aim of turning the region into a FinTech and digital currency hotspot.

[2016-02-01]An Exodus From Bitcoin to Alternative Digital Currencies
by
ukeden
on 01/02/2016, 13:30:39 UTC
If 2015 was the year of the blockchain, perhaps 2016 will be the year of alternatives to Bitcoin.

Since midway point 2015, the Bitcoin community has argued to no end about the future of the Bitcoin protocol. The core of the debate revolves around whether the software should be soft-forked or hard-forked, technical terminology relating to the way in which to implement a change to the way Bitcoin works. In this case, the particular change revolves around how much data the system can process per ten minutes, known as the block size. Many people want to increase the block size from 1MB to 2MB.

[2016-02-01]Premium Hardware Wallet KeepKey Partners with The Vanbex Group
by

on 01/02/2016, 10:27:42 UTC
Bitcoin Press Release: Vancouver, CAN – Among the various digital currency hardware wallets to emerge last year, the Washington-based company KeepKey sticks out for its elegance, simplicity, and security. The device and software, in the form of Chrome extension, remove the nuances of securing a wallet and can be setup in minutes.

The KeepKey software takes control of the management of private key generation, private key storage, and transaction signing. A 12 word recovery sentence gives you access to your money if your device is lost or stolen. To top it all off, private keys made on the KeepKey device never leave the unit, reducing the possibility of theft.

DotA 2 is a bit more complex
Dota 2 will require hours of training for you to comprehend the player matches since there is so much content. League of Legends has a basic tutorial and you can jump in and instantly play
