... would we need 120x more powerful hardware in 6 months ...
The hardware will be 10 times (not 120x but still quite an increase) more powerful, so if you want to keep your income steady, you will need a recent hardware ... do you still use your old 386 or even Pentium I (if you are old enough to ever had one of course)?

recycled/donated anything that old ages ago.. mostly Pentium4's and PentiumD's and the AthlonX2 (or whatever the equiv at the time was) lying around my garage.

hd 4870 in one of them pulling 70, a gtx480 in a cpl year old gaming rig pulling 130, and a gts250 pulling 30 in the few years-older rig addition to a cpu mining botnet I have running at night with some client computers. nothing crazy but it was getting me 0.01 per day last summer until I tried to deal with mtgox and lost my morale with btc's when I couldn't get my hands on any USD.. then tried another broker recently when the price spiked and wanted to get back into the game.

looks like you can get about 70GH/sec for about 3.5k if you buy 2 cubes full of blades chalked full of block erupter miners... at this point you need to drop long paper into a 1,200GH/sec miner or go home.

is there a threshold to the difficulty level or will it continue to rise until all have been given out via lottery? crazy that I would need about 60GHash/sec to get the return I was getting with 0.25-0.5GHash/sec just 6 months ago.. would take 16 months just to break even at a 1btc=1k USD rate. if the difficulty keeps rising at the rate it is now, would we need 120x more powerful hardware in 6 months again too?

conclusion: asics currently overpriced most likely due to the volatile btc value from retailers accepting btc

has anything changed in the last 6 months that would require me to change my setup? maybe just the amount of people mining has drastically increased since the prices went up(dropping reward amounts)? I was getting 0.01btc/day just six months ago when mining between 0.25-0.5Ghash/sec between day and night... now I'm not even getting 0.001btc/day mining at that rate.

Don't mine with CPU. Search for GPU miners.

can tell you didn't read anything before posting. thanks for your contribution.

Scrypt? You downloaded a litecoin miner. Also good luck mining if you don't tell the miner on what mine (pool or solo client)

do you have any advice on how to tell the miner what or where to mine? or any advice on what miner that does CPU based mining to use if can't advise me on 'cpuminer'?

this is where i downloaded the miner from, but cannot post in that thread yet:

Hello All,

just getting into bitcoins/**coins etc.. and I have guiminer running on 2 machines right now but had a question regarding CPUminer.

I downloaded the windows 64bit binary files from this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=55038.520

and when I run minerd.exe I get a command prompt window telling me that 4 threads started using the 'scrypt' algorithm but then immedietely it says
"HTTP request failed: couldn't connect to host"
followed by:
"json_rpc_call failed, retry after 30 seconds"

I see nothing in what I downloaded besides the executable and 2 .dll files... can anyone offer any advise on how to get this up and running? I know cpumining is very slow compared to GPU mining but I have access to several machines that just run off of integrated video.

Thanks,
