Re: Merchant Tools - Which Coin?

I appreciate the link to the chart John. The figures are staggering but will they or could they change? Do they need to change?

Amincd, thank you for your thoguhts, I appreciate your detailed explanations. I am taking each of your points into consideration, they make complete sense.

Yes you should give merchants the option to take different coins, and that may add to their legitimacy and utility as a cryptocurrency
Thanks for your opinion Stampbit, it shows me that there is an argument worth investigating further.

...however without a payment processor like bitpay to handle the transfer into fiat it is unlikely any merchant will want to use an alternative coin.

Yes, I agree. This is true at this point in time. I suppose my real question is will this change?

Mmm I wonder if BitPay would ever consider an alternative coin as a payment option? If so, which one/s?

Would MtGox ever include other coins on their platform?

Thanks again!

I personally support only promoting one blockchain for currency purposes: BTC. More than one blockchain, all of them based on almost identical software, providing the same currency function, is confusing and unnecessary.

Thank you for your opinion. I tend to agree but just recently, over the past 2 weeks, I'm not so sure.

I was thinking it may help the entire crypto community to have one single universal shopping cart plugin where one coin, two or more in any combination can be used. The merchant could make their choice.

For example a merchant may like to use bitcoin and litecoin as a payment option. This way the merchant can simply tick the BTC and LTC option, enter the addresses, select the processing type and any other optional details depending on processing type such as fee structure, number of confirmations etc. Simple as possible.

I posted here because whilst chatting with a friend he said he would be interested in a litecoin version or even feathercoin version. I'm thinking why not have one version with all coins but only if there is a real desire and it will be worthwhile and used. I definitely wouldn't want to make several exclusive plugins that's for sure.

Also, I see a lot of people in chat rooms, trollbox etc debating the value of other coins and statements such as, where can I spend this coin and that coin etc. it aint worth anything if I can't use it blah blah. And some say that bitcoin is the gold and shouldn't even be the every day currency but more a storage system and a lighter, faster coin should be used for spending and used for everyday spending.

Anyway I'm still brain storming, slightly confused and appreciate the feedback as I can't go ahead until I'm focused and a definite plan of action with correct reasoning is established.

Thanks

Merchant Tools - Which Coin?

Introduction

I have stirred up some interest with investors due to some of my activity on talkgold.com. WARNING: Do not invest in any programs listed there as most, perhaps all, are scams. I learned this the hard way!!!

Anyway I have had some discussions with investors that led to the idea of creating a merchant tool/plugin for all major shopping carts (magento, zencart, opencart, bigcommerce etc). The benefit of this tool is merchants can easily choose either BitPay, Coinbase, Mtgox or direct with blockchain api.

This is going well and our developers are finding it very simple. The price for one shopping cart plugin for testing sample was cheap and final quote for 12 shopping cart plugins is a lot less than we expected. Therefore we can afford to take this to the next level and add another or even several coins.

We just need to be steered in the right direction so that all development funds are spent wisely and there is minimal wasted time and money.

Main Question

Which coins should we include and why?

Other Questions

Would it be wise to only have one or two other coins besides BTC? If so which one or two or as many as possible such as LTC, PPC, TRC, NMC, NVC and FTC ?

Are there any other coins that should be considered?

Thank you for your time reading this, all replies will be appreciated and will be considered in great detail.

Is there a good alternative to MtGox that isn't BTC-e?

There must be a more professional and reliable service. If there isn't then we need some competition in this arena quickly.

I like the BTC-e UI but I don't trust them. I have a bitcoin withdrawal with BTC-e that's been in limbo for 24 hours. Poor support. Also many accounts were hacked over the past few days.

I ordered from Coinabul back in March. It took them 3 weeks from the moment I paid to the product arriving and I live in Canada but there was no communication from them during the whole time. Then I checked on this forum about the guy who lost 81btc because of Coinabul, it got my worried. I emailed them 3 times no answer. The last time I emailed directly at jon@coinabul.com (the person who quit, if I recall) he answered me the day that I received them. The coins I received were in good condition, came in individual folded plastic protector.

Overall, I would not order from them again because of their handling/customer support.

That's good news but yeh they should focus on good customer support

Re: Is LastPass Good Enough
by

I like last pass, I trust it fairly well. The important rules are:

  • Use a STRONG master password.
  • Turn on the "Require password reprompt" feature for important/valuable sites.
  • Set the auto log off when idle feature.

A nice thing about last pass is that your passwords don't actually make it to their servers - your vault get decrypted on the client side and only with the master password. I like using a unique 32 character password (letters, numbers and special characters) for every site I use.

The only danger is if you get a keylogger, but I'm not too worried about that since I keep my computers secure (hardened linux everywhere - not invulnerable I know).
Thanks for your info.

Why do you set the auto log off when idle? can someone access your pc and control it from their end? I understand about keyloggers and how a hacker can export files etc but can they do more?

That's your first mistake right there.  I transfer all coins off of those wallets immediately as soon as I can.

As for LastPass, I use it to store 1/2 of password, which is a 15-25 digit string.  The other half is one of several phrases that only I know which are indicated as a bit of text/numbers embedded in the stored password that get substituded out.

So even if lastpass was broken into, they'd still have between 62^5 and 62^10 combinations to try to get to the completed pass.  I store the back-up wallet in a cloud drive using a variation of the password scheme I just told you.

Ideally, I should also be storing this methodology (along with wallet back-ups) with a family member or lawyer in case I die, and keep the lastpass passwords in another location on a piece of paper that you would know but wouldn't make sense to others (or a bank vault like most people) in case lastpass goes kerplut - and my half of the pass phrases with someone I trust.

And to be honest, with the amount of coins I have right now, a crook could get more money by surprising me with a pipe-iron.

Thanks. I have a lot to think about. I like how you store half the passwords, very clever.

I know storing in online wallets is not so good. I do have a paper wallet with a % there but I like to have some in online wallets and trading accounts for quick access and don't want all in one trading account just in case. I suppose i just have to keep minimal in online wallets/trade accounts and get more serious as btc and even ltc is big bucks now.

I'm lazy and get used to the way I do things but yeh i really have to make some changes.

Thanks again!!!

I like it. Very clear and simple which is perfect.

You could provide it free and open source as it is now. This would be a good way to gain users/subscribers. Just ensure they use real email with a confirmation link to download it. The more subscribers the better as it's the best marketing strategy. When you are ready to launch the trading functions you will have an audience and a % will upgrade for a price. And yeh the upgrades cannot be open source.

Open source all the way is brilliant for all concerned and will gain many users/subscribers to sell something else to in the future but only if you have other forms of income and set up financially to do it.

Is LastPass Good Enough
by

on 09/04/2013, 03:37:26 UTC
I use LastPass and have found it very useful but I am now concerned about security with the increase of btc value.

My bitcoins are scattered over several online wallets and trading accounts.

LastPass is used to store all login details including additional fields such as pins etc. and I never store or save the data anywhere else.

KeePass is used to store LastPass password. The LastPass password is very strong but I rarely need to use KeePass as I use the save password function for LastPass.

Is this safe? Can my LastPass account be compromised.

If it can be, what can I do to help boost my security? Any tips will be appreciated and may help others too.

Thanks

Have you received your gold yet I_Wanna_Ride?

I ordered from coinabul very recently (just a tiny bit) and I'm a little worried.
I'd like to know to. Was planning to spend a few btc there.

I get it but you need to have some trust when a noob otherwise one would just sit and wonder.

The best way to learn is to play and to play you must trust. If you don't want to call it trust call it a gamble.

Example: I don't trust you at blah.com but I will take a gamble and hopefully develop trust and get to know you/system.

BUT the rule with gambling is the same as investing is do not gamble/invest more than you can afford to lose.

I've trusted/gambled for 18 months and wow am I happy I did.

A reputation system, like on a lot of vBulletin style forums?

Yes that would be good.

I just saw this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=86580.0
That explains a bit more.

Are there any more ways to know who is a true leader and who I can trust and should listen to?

Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts (new topics or replies).

If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic.

Also:
- Newbies cannot upload their own avatars.
- You must have made one post in order to send PMs.
- You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature.

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted. (The system automatically checks every 10 minutes and promotes people as appropriate.)

Good idea but quite easy for trolls to overcome this. Is there another method to show who knows their stuff and is a leader in the industry besides the number of posts?

We are starting up our ASIC mining business now and would like to join the forums to be able to discuss our solution and make it better. I hope this request will make it possible.

Cool where can I find out more?
