Re: Is it normal to not want to work at all?
by

If I had enough money that I didn't need to work then I'm not exactly sure how I would spend my time but I can't think of a job that I enjoy so much that there's nothing else I'd rather be doing. I think my interests lie mainly outside of work. I'd travel more, I'd spend more time with family and more time on my hobbies and interests.

I don't mind TV and video games but I wouldn't want that to be all I ever did. That's just me though.

I wasn't quite that poor, and it was a long long time ago, and it still feels weird to look at my bank balance. A part of me still always fears that is will be taken away.

Re: Why am I so handsome in the mirror but so ugly in a photo?
by

"ugly in a photo" could mean a lot of things. If you look bad in a selfie, that could be due to using a wide-angle setting on the camera (the default for most cell phones), which distorts any object that's close to the camera. It could be the lighting, too. If you look bad in all photos, even ones taken by other people from 20 feet away in good light, it could be that you are not photogenic.

In either case, you can understand and change your approach to having your photo taken if you learn to think like a model. All people have good points and bad points. When you look in a mirror, you are only seeing one point of view. The camera sees you differently.

To be "photogenic", you present yourself in a way that maximizes the good and minimizes the bad, at the moment the image is captured. Some people do this unconsciously, but you can learn.

As another example, I once knew a young woman who, to be honest, was rather plain. Both her face and body were roundish, she generally looked kind of gawky, but in every photo she always looked vivacious and pretty. Her smile, her eyes, the way she held her body just made her come alive. I don't know whether she did anything consciously or not.

For me, the big problems are my a big nose and weak chin, and I'm very tall and large-framed. When other people take pictures of me, the camera is low so they see a lot of my chin and the size of my nose is accentuated -- the worst view of me. I noticed by accident that a very few pictures made me look much better, and in those, I had my whole head pointed down, as if I had been looking at the photographer's knees but moved just my eyes to look into the camera lens. I look better when I am slightly behind other people (even if we're all in a row), because that makes me seem less huge. I started making those adjustments whenever anyone takes a picture of me, and I look a LOT better in photos. In reality, I am sure I look huge to everyone, but I don't care.

I don't know if you are handsome or not. But I do know you can do a lot to make yourself look better in photos with practice and by using a critical eye to discover your good points and make sure that's what's captured in the image.

Re: Is it weird to wake up 2 hours before anybody else to have time alone?
by

I get up at 5am too. And it's also so I have time alone before anyone else gets up. The main reason is that I've set aside that time to game because if I game in the evening chances are I'll get interrupted by a family pet needing to go out, a child needing something, a phone call, my wife needing something etc. Being "on call" all the time doesn't give me time to really relax and get into anything because I'm constantly listening out for issues. At 5am to 7am it's quiet, no one is up, no one needs anything and I get that time to myself uninterrupted (most of the time). I'm not slightly on edge waiting for the next call of "Daaaaaaad?" or the sound of a dog scratching the door etc.

I'm a much happier person because of this, it doesn't hurt anyone so it's win, win for everyone. Everyone needs down time. Don't worry about it.

Re: What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"?

Last job I worked.

"Yea, everyone here is new, but it's totally because of covid"

"The boss doesn't like people going out to get lunch because they're afraid you'll never come back, so being your own lunch"

"You'll get weird looks if you leave on time". It was a chinese owned company with heavy chinese work culture influence so you were expected to stay overtime all week.

Also "the people here are nice but it's pretty stressful".

Eta: also was told by my trainer "you want to know the best advice I can give you? Find another job". This was like...my 2nd week in.

My wife lived in Japan for a few years and worked at an educational center. Her work hours were from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. She was the only non-japanese person that worked there. Her first few weeks she worked until 8:30 p.m. because she noticed that when she got to leave at 5:00, nobody else budged and that everyone else worked much much later. She clarified with the recruiter that got her the job that she is not obligated to stay any later than 5:00 even if everyone else is staying later. She would get up and leave and everyone would give her dirty looks as she walked out. Asian work culture is toxic

Social worker. I spend 75% of my day on the phone listening to really sad stories and do my best to find a solution or some assistance 😕 then the other 25% documenting the crap out of everything like my life depends on it.

Excel / Sheets! Seriously. Quantify your life, man. Learn the numbers and the formulas. Learn yourself and your world in a new way. Get control of things. It’s a big ol’ puzzle for your brain and you can go as deep as you want. Bonus points to integrate iOS shortcuts and Jailbreak’s Activator. I could go on for days...

Volkswagen ignition cylinders.

When I worked at Vw, we had to constantly order ignition switches because either they are cheaply designed or cheaply made. So when we would place the order from Volkswagen North America, it gets shipped directly from the manufacturer (either Huf or Valeo). And they would include the invoice in the box.

Well, Vw would charge the dealerships $99.95 and set MSRP at 129.95. The invoice from the manufacturer to Vw, showed cost to Vw being $14.95

I am picturing your cameras on top of a long, thin electrical conduit, and everybody else must gingerly build the rest of stadium around it so as not to disrupt your contract.

Re: How do you make friends when you're 30+?

My story; I recently switched jobs and I hadn't met any of my coworkers due to corona.

I saw a coworkers Volvo V60 (my dream car) was up for grabs and I was the only one who showed interest in taking it, so I went by his house to see it; We started talking and it turned out we shared a lot of common interests; BBQ, Beers, Whiskey & sigars. He mentioned that he and some other coworkers had a little club and they got together for slowcooking sessions! I instanly became best friends with half the management at my company!
Those are some niche interests. Its extremely rare for two men to share those interests. Chance a million.

Re: What’s the weirdest thing that you’ve kept in your wallet?

I was wandering around Pike place market in Seattle when I was approached by a guy dressed as a monk. He wordlessly goaded me out of 20 bucks, gave me a bracelet and a small card type thing that says some nonsense like "Work hard and live well" then sent me on my way. I keep it in my wallet behind my ID, so I can always remember that time in Seattle when I was hustled by a monk.
