Thanks for your replies.  are there no miners about <$1500-2000 ish that will make ROI within a few months?

I think I might go down the route of buying BTC then, and trying to find sites that I can spend it on.

Ta
Adam

you are missing one thing in your calculation.
difficulty.
it will go up, maybe not that much but will go up so your ROI in 22 months will become never.
your electricity cost will stay the same while your earnings will drop down with diff go up.
buy some BTC and play with them on Bitstamp, you know selling high and buying low.
I'm earning that way more than I mine in a month with 20TH of hashing power.

don't think so.
that kind of hashing power fluctuations are common on daily basis.
you can't even feel it from miners perspective.

To the OP, why do you think the difficulty decreased this period?

Because some farms shut off their miners silly!

We're already at that point were the price drop isn't covering hosting and electrical costs...

difficulty decreased?Huh
you call -0.73% on 40 billion difficulty decrease???
are you serious???
difficulty stayed the same.
you know why???
not because some farms shut off.
it's because no new hash power is added to network.
why?
because nothing even close worth buying is on market lately.
everyone waiting for next generation miners.

friendly advice, buy some btc and hold on them.
there is no mining equipment worth of buying.
with that money you can buy way more btc than any miner on the market can mine you in his lifetime.
I have certain amount of btc and by trading on bitstamp (sell high, buy low) I am earning in a month more than I was able to mine with 20TH in 6 months.
don't throw your money.
be smart.

sorry but you throw your money away.
first thing, forget about btc mining with gpu. as you can see you can't earn anything with it.
second thing, 40GH asic is obsolete right now and also won't earn you anything.
even if you have free electricity with 40GH you will earn around 0.00049916 BTC or $0.19/day on this diff and btc value which is miserable earnings.

internet traffic is at least of your problem there.

as far as I can see here you don't have anything to mine with.
don't tell me that your laptop is only thing you have to mine with???
if you didn't notice, you can't mine with laptop or any other average desktop.
you need mining rig with couple of gpu-s in it to mine some scrypt coins or ASIC miner for btc mining.
