Re: CoinTracking - Profit/Loss Portfolio and Tax Reporting for Digital Currencies

Is there a how-to for the correct way to track Coinbase in CoinTracking using their API keys? I've imported my information but I know I'm missing some steps on to accurately account correctly going back a few years involving deposits, purchases etc. Coinbase takes transfers to different addresses as sells, but for accounting/tax is this the correct way? I'm just looking for a how-to guide on using Coinbase with APIs. If I must I'll use the csv files and follow a how-to as well.  Thanks

I just went to CT, I too have an "Unlimited" account, and found that when I went to my Coinbase API it had a red "Key Invalid". BUT, when I hit the "check now" button, it worked, and the Key invalid went away too.

Thanks, I wonder if they are having API issues, I was using another service and it keeps timing out to Coinbase.

Just tried again and still getting Key Invalid, which I know isn't the case. I wish there was more feedback. Frustrating to pay for it, and immediately run into an issue with a 5 day backlog on support.

Issue fixed - it was a a browser issue of all things. Did not work correctly in Chrome (most likely do to an extension) It did work in Safari... odd!

I posted this on Reddit, but doesn't seem like there is a lot of traffic:

CoinTracking (Coinbase API) says Key Invalid.

I've recently purchased Cointracking and I followed the instructions and gave only read access that it needed to the newly created API Key. On the site it says "Key Invalid" next to the API key I've created and entered. I've also deleted it and added it back, as well as creating another API key and adding that with all read access. They all come back as Key Invalid. Is there an issue or something I'm missing? I've added API keys many times before to other configuration files and sites.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: ETA for the ETF? (and Gemini Exchange speculation)

This is what I see happening. With GBTC coming to closer to parity with NAV just as you said and with the upcoming decision from the Winklevoss ETF (COIN) and the SolidX Bitcoin Trust ETF (XBTC). Let's say they say yes, then you should see an influx of Bitcoin being purchased which should drive up the price of Bitcoin, which would in theory then drive up the price of GBTC. If they come back and say no, then in theory GBTC would once again go up in price and be further from NAV as there would not be a COIN or XBTC ETF available to participate in. Either way, unless BTC falls dramatically for some reason GBTC should only go up from here with both good or bad news from the upcoming SEC announcements.

I think the GBTC might end up significantly lower though.  A rising bitcoin tide will raise all boats. but would it raise GBTC fast enough to offset that? I thought there were some big advantages for almost all investors in choosing an ETF over GBTC.  Is there any reason someone would prefer GBTC?  If not then the only reason anyone would buy it would be because it's cheap enough that going to the trouble of getting the actual BTC out would be worth it.

An ETF is heads and shoulders better than an OTC investment. I'm speaking strictly about the price to NAV of GBTC. Prices will always fluctuate above and below NAV but will always come back to NAV when they swing to far left and right of the correct price. If or should I say when an ETF is approved more money will flow into the ETFs, but GBTC will benefit from the rising price of Bitcoin. The assumption of course if that the ETFs will immediately start taking in money from hedge funds and other investment firms looking to diversify for their portfolios and their investors. The best thing which has occurred recently has been for the recent major 3 Chinese exchanges to impose trading fees and no longer allowing leveraging. Even if the ETF is not approved, I don't think there will be a major swing and if it does occur this time around the gap would be quickly filled.

Why haven't many or any people picked up on the lack of demand for similar ish European initiatives likes the Swedish ETN and the Global Advisers one?

Are they fundamentally set up in a less sexy way, accessed in a completely different way or will the American versions be open to a different class of money? I haven't paid them enough attention to know. There's plenty of money in Europe too which has barely shown a peep of interest.

And here's some fun baseless speculation  as well.

There are some other ways to purchase Bitcoin through overseas market, but the US market and the availability of an ETF which brings in major investment funds and legitimacy is what would be a major bullish long term play on Bitcoin. I don't think a Swedish ETN (Bitcoin tracker one" (BTO) that's listed on NASDAQ/OMX in Stockholm), and the Global Advisors Investment Fund plc (GABI) which is listed on the Channel Islands Securities Exchange (CISE) says mainstream in any way shape or form.

Re: How to backup Google Authenticator?
by

on 12/01/2014, 23:59:31 UTC
Use this program https://code.google.com/p/winauth/ Then make sure after you add all your secrets to it, then back up the winauth.xml file which houses our your secrets from %appdata%\winauth
Also has password/encrypted option and allows you to tie to the PC in question if so desired.

As others have said backup the secrets or QR code and you can also use another phone or tablet to house your info in Google Authenticator or Authy < which you can set to backup your data. Authy also allows you to set a pin # for the program, GA doesn't but you can download a 3rd party app to do the same.

Re: My friend got scammed. BTC-e code stolen.

Who knows the true story, but the most obvious issue is that someone let their computer be controlled by an unknown 3rd party.
This is no different than giving your password via email or over the phone.

I saw no mention of 2fa. 2fa is needed to log-in or to withdrawal or both if you check it along with changing security which is mandatory. I assume that only log-in was checked and not withdrawal? If so, that explains how the BTC-e code was generated.

Also, since there was access to the computer, I'm sure they simply opened up the email client, which was already logged in and  confirmed the withdrawal.

The moral of the story is, if you don't know the general security rules of the internet, then don't get on it, especially when it comes to $.

Just curious, why would your "friend" allow someone to remote into his PC in the first place? What was this support person supposed to do anyone? Even though we know it wasn't a real support person.

BTC is gone, nothing to recover, unless somehow the confirmation email went into spam, but if there are no BTC in the account, then it's bye bye.

I received a reply, but it was not in reference to my actual problem.
I need to have 2fa removed, as my phone crashed and the QR backup did not sync up before it crashed.
I will do whatever validation is needed, thanks.

you answered, see ticket

Thanks, just FYI, that link you sent was all in Russian. I translated it via Google translate, and now I will wait 2 weeks. Thanks again

Re: CoinMarketCap.com - Market Cap Rankings of All Cryptocurrencies!
by

on 05/12/2013, 16:35:11 UTC
NXT should only be listed if it is trade on an existing exchange and not a private exchange, where prices are manipulated.

I don't hate any coin, but the listing on coinmarketcap, links to a non-existant location at http://www.cryptocoincharts.info/#jump-nxt-btc <- Which means it's not on an established exchange.

The trading back and forth on the small p2p exchange does not do justice to the price and it is currently inflated.

If coinmarketcap is going to add a coin that only trades off the major exchanges, then that tells me that coinmarketcap has other motives for promoting these coins on their site.

For those that own the coin, great, but don't get upset that someone points this out. If it gets added to one of the major exchanges, then it can be added to coinmarketcap.

Re: MtGox withdrawal delays [Gathering]
by

on 18/11/2013, 05:12:18 UTC
First, is USD being processed at this time or is the only option to request current BTC on hand and then use an alt-exchange to process to USD.

If they are processing USD, I have a question.

If you submit a withdraw from MtGox and let's say the price is at $500 and they don't "process" your withdraw until 2-4 weeks later, at what price are you being locked into? Are you being locked into the price on the day you initiated the withdraw, or on the day that the actual withdraw takes places. Obviously you would want to have the higher price, assuming it was going up. If the money is still in MtGox while it is "in-process", then they are making money when the price goes up, but taking the difference in the price.

Can someone elaborate on this for me?

Thanks

It works fine since it looks after the colon ( : ) for the @ then the host.
So an @ before the ( : ) is ignored.

Trying to set deepbit as backup, but how to do it, when username contains @? Eg --backup=abc@gmail.com:password@pit.deepbit.net:8332 won't probably work, because it thinks that  "gmail.com:password@pit.deepbit.net:8332" is the whole hostname?

Well, the only issue I see that I overlooked and I'm not sure if rrdgraph can do it or not but I want the left side "load" scale from 0 to 100%, and the right side "temp" to scale from say 50 to 90C.  If that's not possible, it's not a big deal, as I can simply look and see the avg load and last load.
