However, it will come to the point that which party should deliver first.

For OTC trades, yes. But for a trusted exchange, hard to see why they don't accept deposits via Skrill if they don't allow chargebacks :S

This is a thing that holds back bitcoin Its hard to buy coins.

It's easier in some countries than others. I was expecting it to be quite easy from the UK, but actually quite hard because we don't have either Dwolla or cheap SEPA transfers, and all the exchanges that had domestic UK accounts had them closed (AFAIK). OKPay still has a UK account but they have £4 fixed fee and often takes them a while to process deposits.

I was quite excited when I found a place to buy bitcoins using via Barclay's PingIt smartphone service but even using all the tricks to "hide my root" on my android phone, I couldn't make it install Sad

I think maybe in the UK we have a problem that the financial services industry is so powerful they see bitcoin as a threat.

Re: BTC for L$ Linden Dollars

It feels very scammy to me since I know the history of the Bank run in SL they claim to have insured and, well, they took my money and they haven't given it back yet.

Not at all scammy, I've been dealing with them for a while now and hold the operators in the highest regard. They always make sure whatever happens (thefts, scams, SL rule changes) their clients don't lose out, often taking some pretty big losses themselves.

It's that or it's really a hobby website trying to pose as more than it is.

The trading volumes have rocketed lately so they are in the process of stepping up a few gears. But they are very professional and responsible, more so than a 'hobby' outfit.

I'll let you know if they give me my money back.

If you have a problem just let me know, I promote that site whenever I can because I trust them enough to stake my own rep on their conduct. So if there's any issue I REALLY DO want to know about it!

For small amounts you can buy Linden $ using credit card then change them for BTC at VirWoX or The Rock. That is how I got my first few BTC in the end.
This is indeed the way. However I would not recommend this for high volume because you end up with triple transaction fees.
- You pay 3% - 20% depending on deposit method.
- You pay transaction fees for exchanging USD/EUR to Linden $
- You pay transaction fees for exchanging Linden $ to BTC

I don't pay all that just buying L$ via the official SL Lindex, they just charge your card directly then I only pay 1% commission to The Rock for BTC.
It's OK now that they know me and I have a high deposit limit, but to start with I could only make very small linden deposits to The Rock each day.

I think you must be talking about going VirWoX first to buy the Lindens, which is crazy expensive. I only tried that once. I put funds on Neteller from my credit card, deposited that to VirWox and bought Lindens, which I moved then to The Rock. At the time Lindex wouldn't take my card, which turned out to be a problem with their gateway and I got 2000 L$ free as compensation for that. But the smile was soon wiped off my face when I got my credit card bill and saw that MBNA charged me an extortionate fee for Neteller as a 'cash' transaction.

Anyway, back on topic, the only way this can be done is to push the risk off onto another entity, in this case Lindex. The risk is partly shared in that SL sometimes confiscates L$ from The Rock if they are traced back to a source that since did a chargeback. Hence the cautious deposit limits initially.

It's all very frustrating but eventually you can always find ways that are not too expensive. Nowadays I buy enough BTC to use wire transfers but this method via L$ still comes in handy at times.

No rush to post

Kind of an assumption, don't you think?

you should spend itme looking around and getting a feel for a forum

Lots of people read this board without ever having an account.
Or maybe you follow a link from twitter to a topic particularly relevant to you, you try to make a reply... oh.

posting useless shit and rable

I think that was the OPs point, you end up having to post useless shit and babble just to get onto the main board, which is not what everybody came here for.

Surely there's a better way?

I do not see why alot of people are negative about what i am doing.... I am only trying to help!

Not so much being negative as recognising that - in spite of what you are doing - it's frustrating for newbies that they can't quickly get hold of enough bitcoins to really start using them as currency.

But that's just the way of things now, bitcoins are no longer easy to come by and they aren't just "maybe worth something some day", they are worth quite a lot today.

Transaction fees are getting expensive is really the point I think.

Even when I started trying to get a few satoshi together (not so long back, when BTC was ~$10) I had started using a wallet at 'flexcoin' to collect up what I could get for free from faucets etc. and was quite upset to later discover that it would cost me more than I had made after hours wasted clicking links, watching videos, refreshing pages trying to catch bigger prizes and so on, just to transfer money out of the flexcoin wallet (always read the smallprint!).

Now payouts are much lower and everyone is applying mandatory transaction fees for the network too. So it really is hard for newbies, but IMHO they need to understand that bitcoins are not just a toy currency, hence they don't come free. Otherwise they are just as likely to get frustrated and give up on it as they are to get interested and go buy some.

Doesn't mean I think what you're doing is bad at all. I'm sure plenty of newbies are grateful.

Please let me out so that I can stop clicking around just to meet the time requirement.
Otherwise I might get fired and then I can't buy any more bitcoins!

Is there a way for mining them?

IIRC ripples are more like an intermediary denomination between currency markets.
So no, unless I misunderstood, you won't ever be able to mine them.

I missed out too Cry

I have spent a couple of hours with that, got around 2 mB and still can't send the first satoshi to anyone because of mining fees (using http://blockchain.info).

I guess you have spend a lot more than a couple of hours to get a useful amount of BTC.
Wasn't always the case when BTC was worth less.

What's the point of free bitcoins websites?

There's not a lot of point. It's mostly for people without a job and nothing better to do, like Swagbucks etc.

Re: Do Bitcoins need something REAL to back them?
by
wdaniels
on 19/04/2013, 15:53:53 UTC
I agree that bitcoin needs to be backed by something... an economy.

The definition of a 'fiat' currency is one that can be used to pay taxes.

One day perhaps it could happen (who knows!) but the same principle applies regardless. You have to be able to buy stuff with it. And you can. So that way it is 'backed' by very real capital.

The only thing we need to get the bitcoin economy moving is price stability.

Things that I think would help improve price stability are:

  • Broader distribution of the coins in circulation (more consumers, fewer speculators).
  • A higher value in exchange for fiat currencies (harder to move the market).

So everything seems on track, it's just going to take time.

You can also trade BTC vs L$ at The Rock Trading.

I actually do 90% of my bitcoin trading there, they have some BTC (and L$) investment funds as well.

The Rock HQ is in Buttermere region in SecondLife.

Why would you want to post if you find it difficult to post 5 times?  Huh

Not difficult, just frustrating. A few times I've followed links here (to non-newbie sections), had something to say, but couldn't. So I move on elsewhere.

Finally decided to make an account and get these stupid posts out of the way.

One down.
