Re: [Guide] Comprehensive ASICMiner Blade Setup

Now I am trying a much stronger PSU on a different blade,  When set to port 3333 for Eclipse (not sure where I got it) the proxy scrolls so fast I can't make out what it is doing, but the miner does not hash and the pool shows no work.  hhmmm Sad
Sounds like login/pool info is wrong.

I agree, but I just can't find squat for info on this.   I've tried a hundred combinations now and nothing seems to work.   There is only a few variables here so I'm not sure how I am messing it up.

-o us2.eclipsemc.com -p 3333 (or 8337, or 8332)

On config page,
ports =  Same as pool?
serveraddress = localhost (with or without the ports?!)
userpass = pool user and pass

this seems simple, but obviously because I am showing no hashrate, there is a pool-connection glitch or something I assume.  I just averaged the performance of the last several hours, and they are only averaging 5ghash on the pool.  Why would they restart every 2 minutes if it was pool problems though?

Me = confused...

My blades worked fine with eclipsemc but I had to set up a stratum proxy and go through that.

When this shipment arrives, how many 'extra' blades might there be for us to buy?

Apologize if I am missing this somewhere. What size USPS priority flat rate box for shipping the blades? I would also like to know if the first batch is spoken for.. Thanks Canary and keep up the good work!

Medium flat rate can hold two ... maybe three.

The big question and decision point is: Where does 20 or 30% stop each difficulty increase? I don't see 30% happening for 500 days. Although I COULD be wrong here.

You're right.  I think we'll have some increases of 50+% mixed in there too.

Is there any official information on the power requirements/limits for the fan headers on the blades? I know fans dont take too much power but it seems like the blades can already take quite a bit of power in just for running them.

Just didnt know if it would be beneficial to run the fans through the blades rather than the same power rail from the PSU. (currently have my 4 blades running the fans from 1 power rail and each blade from its own power rail). just trying to think about expandabiltity.

I don't see how it should make much of a difference.  I heard one reason that blade plug only needs two terminals connected (one 12V and one ground) was to leave you room to wire in fans to the plug (in addition to the headers).  The amps pulled by the fans should be pretty small compared to the blade so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, noobish question here. I have the latest (old blade) revision and for some reason when I connect it, All i hear are a few 'clicks' and then nothing.

Silly question: Did you perhaps forget to plug in the red fuse ?

The newest (old) blades have no red fuse? or did mine just really freaking ship without one..

My new "old" blade that I received this week came with a red fuse but it was not packed in the boxes with the boards, it was outside the boxes wrapped in plastic bubble-wrap along with the green power adapter. I almost lost them among the rest of the packing in the shipment. Perhaps look closer at the box/packaging.  Otherwise, the 10A fuse is cheap and not difficult to locate at a hardware store or Auto Parts store. A Quick google search finds this picture of the fuse:

Agreed, I nearly lost mine as well.

Ok, noobish question here. I have the latest (old blade) revision and for some reason when I connect it, All i hear are a few 'clicks' and then nothing. No Ethernet light, nada. I am pretty 100% that I followed instructions and that my rails provide enough power for at least things to 'work'.

Any ideas?

Does your power supply stay on or does it short out?  Mine will power on for less than a second before shorting out the power supply.

Power supply stays on, just no reaction from blade at all. I have a 750W Thermaltake with several hundred watts 'free' (just running AMD + GPU @ idle). I am only using one rail though and only Yellow + Black cables (as per newer blade instructions).

I find it sort of LAZY of ASICMINER to not provide updated sheme/instructions with their latest blade design. Fuse and power connector is different and all I have to go on is the old instructions.. (as sparse as they are)

And you read 12V across the power connector?

Where are you pulling your power from? Don't use a SATA port if thats where you are grabbing it.

My first attempt was two separate molex lines.  My second attempt was off the pci express (3x 12v lines there).  I then also tried two molex plus the 3 12v pci express lines which should provide more than enough amperage.  Like I said before, the psu powers up fine when the blade isn't connected, which is how I can confirm 12V across the green power plug.  I don't have anything else drawing power and it's a 450+ W PSU.  I've swapped out the PSU and had the same trouble with my "used" PSU.

My first erupter blade arrived and I think it may be decfective.  I have a brand new power supply and have wired up the included plug and verified the voltages with my
multimeter (multiple 12v yellow and black ground wires from my psu).  When I plug in the unit and switch on the PSU, the green LED illuminates, I here a click, then about 0.5-1.0 seconds later the PSU powers down.  I think there might be a short somewhere in the blade.  It's 100% reproducible every time I attempt to turn the unit on.  if the unit is not plugged in, with the green plug wired up, I do not have any issues and read 12v across the screws so I'm pretty sure it's not my wiring.

Any ideas?

Its the PSU. Since it is not connected to the mobo, it shuts down.
Use this method and try.
http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/testing-your-corsair-power-supply/

And if you have not so yet, read the OP again. Its mentioned in the OP

So how do we plug the blade into a PSU? First we need to tell the PSU to always be on, as there isn't a motherboard to do this. We use the old paperclip trick. http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/testing-your-corsair-power-supply Similar to that but instead of using it as a test, we'll cut the paperclip short and tape it up for safety.

I already had that set up (that's how I could test the PSU and know the correct voltage is going to the plug).  I can power fans without any problems.  The issue is when I hook the blade up, it seems to short out the psu (I have to turn it off, unjumper the green power on wire to reset it).  Any other ideas?

Shall I buy 1 USB Block Erupter and after starting to gain some bucks, re-invest in another one and so on ?!
As long as you realise that, assuming free electrcity, it will take a year before the BE has "earned" enough to buy a 2nd one ...

This is harder to speculate on since the price will likely drop as well.  Remember, they started at 2btc and have dropped 75% in 2-3 months.

It really depends on what your goals are.  For the price, you will have a hard time ever breaking even on a single erupter - which is fine if you know that going into it.  You might be able to break even through mining something for a small period of time and then selling it (either asic or gpu).

If you want to dip your toe in mining and have any reason to want a higher end graphics card (gaming, cad, whatever), AND you already have a pci-x slot open and psu that can handle it, buying a 7950 new or used is a nice option.  You'll spend more, mine just a bit more than an erupter, but hold your value more.  Also, you can explore ltc mining later if you want.  If you want to learn the mining tools and be a part of the network that's a great place to start.  My 0.02USD.
