But I'd like an expert and proponent of Bitcoin to demistify the currency for me, and to talk about the potential threat, if there even is one, but also discuss the benefits of the currency and its advantages.
A lot of proponents for bitcoin would trout anonymousness as a feature rather than a threat. It really depends on your point of view. If you're a privacy advocate, it's a good thing. Law enforcements and anti-money laundering people thinks it's a bad thing.
I believe Steve Gibson, of Security Now, called it the "crypto-dilemma". On one hand, it could be tool of political activists to resist repressive states such as China and Libya. On the other hand it could be used as a tool to launder money from kidnapping operations and organized crime activities.
If bitcoin succeeded, we will all have to live with the consequence of the new technology. For nation-states of all stride, from authoritarian to democratic ones, it will be a devastating attack on their power. It will give power back to the individuals. For some of us, that's what we like to see.
One of the large US banks (Wachovia) recently was fined for laundering 400 BILLION DOLLARS in drug money.
Has anyone ever bought that many drugs with bitcoin ? What about a story showing how illegal things are done using existing systems?
witcoin (http://witcoin.com/) is a social news site (think reddit) powered by bitcoin. To post, reply and upvote costs a fraction of a witcoin (1 witcoin = 1 bitcoin); this is distributed among the original poster/replier, previous upvoters, category renter and site dev team/charities chosen by witizens [1].
Depending on the category you post in your mileage may vary. http://random.witcoin.com/ has a post cost of .00000001 for instance.
To promote witcoin.com I am giving away 0.05 witcoin (0.05 BTC) to the forum users that sign up on http://witcoin.com/getwitit and post their witcoin.com account url (for example http://witcoin.com/witizens/7) as a reply in this thread.
Please use this gift to post content, send replies and upvote on the site; but you are welcome to withdraw witcoins for bitcoins.
For more information about witcoin, read their FAQ at http://faq.witcoin.com/ and if you have bug reports and/or feature requests use http://meta.witcoin.com/ (bug reporters are currently rewarded).

Trading of illegal goods is forbidden on this forum.
Right, I read that but it's ok to link to sites that trade in illegal goods. I'm not sure if that's a fine line or if that's totally ok in the mind of the ISP / internet community.
Also it says illegal in buyer/sellers country if I remember right. If a guy in Amsterdam wanted to sell some hash (marijuana not a mining contract) to his buddy I'm assuming he'd be allowed to despite being illegal where the server is hosted (US I think)
These days even linking to torrent files can see you site get shut down if you refuse to censor your users.
