I'm curious to see some pictures of those mining rigs.  Share your pictures of your rig and then details of build and mhash/sec.  Let's get a frame of reference up here with some visuals.  I will use this first post as a place holder and take a picture of my own rig later today.

I am fortunate enough to have a shop with space for me to setup my mining rigs.  So far I've just gone with the open "bench" setup to save on costs and to make cooling easy.

In the photo you can see the bench with three rigs (a mix of 5870, 5970 and one older 5840) on the floor is the Bitcoin solo server running in -server mode, which also has 2 5870's.  There are a couple of other machines in my office with 5870's elsewhere.  I am at 3.8G/hash and adding about 1/g/hash per week buying up cheap used cards via craigslist.

I am working on building a good Ubuntu Live ATI ISO file today in an attempt to eliminate all of the hard drives by using USB thumb drives, that'll save on electricity as well as hardware costs going forward.

solo mining = hashes accepted only if it matches the network difficulty, which will take forever.

Ah, that makes sense... going to be a long while before I see an "Accepted" then Smiley

do you have a bitcoin.conf file in your bitcoin data folder with a RPC password set?

something like (this may not be exactly correct):

server=1
rpcuser=username
rpcpassword=password
rpcallowip=127.0.0.1
rpcport=8332

Yes, the bitcoin.conf file is configured, otherwise the client wouldn't connect to the server, right?

Here is the bitcoin.conf file:
Quote
server=1
rpcuser=bits
rpcpassword=*****
rpcallowip=192.168.0.*
rcpport=8332
paytxfee=0.00

I enabled verbose mode, here is the output:

Dorking around with solo mining on a spare rig and it never accepts any hashes even though it is running full tilt.

Ignore the low hash rate, I haven't optimized the client with flags yet.  Yes I know that that'd likely take years to find a block solo these days.

Running a Phoenix 2.0 client and connected to Bitcoin-qt v0.8.1-beta running in -server mode that has downloaded the full blockchain.

Where have I gone wrong?

I transferred $750 Monday evening and it still hasn't shown up in my Dwolla account.

Anyone know what the current delay time is?
Ah, just noticed that MtGox customer support replied back to me, and I quote:
Quote
Mt.Gox Support, May 10 10:57 (JST):
Hello X,

Unfortunately, due to huge volumes of Dwolla withdrawals, we are unable to complete your withdrawal at the moment and it would take up to 6 business days for the transfer to be processed. Our apologies for the delay and inconvenience caused.

Thanks,

was about to take you up on this.  unfortunately those 3x pci slots won't do crap for mining.. so these are essentially  3 card boards

Totally agree, I was just using the two native PCIe slots, you would need adapters to attach more than two cards per board.

Core setup for up to 6 graphics cards, a nice inexpensive expansion option for any mining farm.

Qty (3) MSi 870-G45 motherboard (just the motherboard + i/o plate for a case)
Qty (3) AMD Sempron 140 CPU (OEM w/fan + heat sink)
Qty (3) 2GB DDR3 RAM
Qty (1) 1GB USB stick
Qty (2) 4GB USB Stick

Just add a power supply + GPUs and you are ready to mine.

$350 (or BTC equivalent) including shipping from the Seattle area, I will guarantee against DOA and promptly refund any returned component.

WTS: DOA Sapphire 5970 4gb edition

Best offer, including shipping out the Seattle area.

Sapphire 5970 4gb edition

Symptoms: Fans spin when power is applied, card backplane warms up but the card will not display anything.  When put into a known good system with another good GPU as the primary it boots up into the GUI and then hangs the system when this card is installed.

Card only, as-is, no accessories, cables, manuals or anything else will be included.

Here are some photos of the card:

WTS: (2) Reference edition Sapphire HD 6950 2GB video cards
by

on 01/05/2012, 16:26:19 UTC
Two reference edition Sapphire 6950's as shown in the photos, one XFX one ATI from an open air mining rig that I've had operating for the past 9 months.  Card were operated at stock speeds and never over temp, they are in excellent condition.

One card has the shaders unlocked, I forget which one off the top of my head, the other has not been modified.

$450 (or BTC equivalent) for both including shipping via Priority Mail out of the Seattle area. I'll include the crossfire cable and one 16x PCIe riser cable.  I will guarantee against DOA and will promptly refund any returned card.

Will you work with escrow?
What were the hash rates you were getting?

If the escrow service is considered reliable and have a method for me to recover the cards if the funds are not released, then sure, I'm in no particular rush.

Hash rates were ~325 per core running under BAMT at stock settings.

Thanks,

Why are you selling?
Just thinning out the mining rigs, my return on mining vs. electricity is approaching the breakeven point.

on 01/05/2012, 02:39:42 UTC
The cards are ATI Radeon HD 5970 2gb editions.

Both are from an open-air mining rig for 9 months, never OC'd or over temp, no fan or resetting issues at all. They are completely stock, never opened up or modified in any manner.

$325 (or BTC equivalent) each, shipping included (priority mail from the Seattle area) within the continental US, if you buy both I'll throw in (2) 4-pin molex to 8-pin PCIe power adapters, a 16x PCIe riser cable and the crossfire cable.

Here are some photos of the actual cards:

Alright, I'll bite, I'm a sucker for laser gadgets.

Order placed, discount applied, bitcoins sent.  Will report back if/when the device arrives and if it hits their specs after testing.

Yay, the unit finally arrived.  Well packaged, well put together, this thing is ridiculously bright.

One note, the sale is just for the base unit, you will need a couple of CR123A batteries and a set of appropriate safety glasses on hand.

Good seller, I am satisfied with the transaction!

Re: BAMT version 0.5 - Easy USB based mining Linux with farm wide management tools

looks like xwindows isn't happy.  try (logged in as root, never sudo):
/opt/bamt/start_mining pre
(let it sit there for a bit)

and

xauth merge /home/user/.Xauthority
all that happens on boot anyway, but sometimes if your rig boots slowly it can happen too soon.

the best test for if its fixed is:
atitweak -s
if atitweak can't list your cards, the ADL libs aren't working and BAMT isn't going to have any joy.

That did the trick, just running the /opt/bamt/start_mining pre and everything suddenly appeared on my monitoring machine, then I ran a mine restart to get things hashing.  So, how do I make this happen properly during the normal booting sequence?

Thank you for the advice.

I burned a new USB stick with the .5b image tonight, edited bamt.conf and the pools files, then applied the fixes via fixer.

The GPUs won't start mining, I'm getting the "No protocol specified" error.

Mother -v returns:
Quote
mother starts (19 seconds since last run)
babysit autoconf client...
        autoconf client is ok
look for defunct phoenix...
gathering GPU status...No protocol specified
done
broadcasting status
No protocol specified
checking GPU health...
refreshing desktop bg..

Running /etc/init.d/mine restart returns:
Quote
Stopping mining processes...: mine...
Starting mining processes...: minestart_mining: starting mining processes
No protocol specified
..munin.

Running aticonfig --list-adapters returns
Quote
* 0. 07:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
  1. 0e:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
  2. 0f:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
  3. 06:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
* - Default adapter

What did I miss, it seems like things should be running fine?

Thanks!

Re: Second GPU overheating on a 5970
by
xanadu
on 02/03/2012, 00:17:50 UTC
Thanks for all of the advice!

I opened the card up and it was a mess, clearly the previous owner had been inside at some point and didn't really know what they were doing.  There was way too much thermal paste on the GPUs and the pads were far too thick, never mind that some were out of place and that they left old adhesive behind.

I redid the thermal paste but since the pads were wrong it still had the same overheating issue with the second GPU, I returned the card and got my money back, not worth dealing with all that hassle, maybe I can find another 5970 somewhere else.

Thanks,
-X

Second GPU overheating on a 5970
by
xanadu
on 21/02/2012, 02:34:00 UTC
I picked up a 5970 today and after dropping it into a rig it runs great!  Except for the fact that the second GPU runs about +23C hotter than number one.

Running BAMT, 820/300, getting 379M/hash from both GPUs.  GPU 1 is running at 77.5C and GPU 2 is at 101.5C

Obviously I didn't leave it running at those temps  Shocked

The card is clean and the fan is running properly, even if I run it up to 90% the temps are reported as very high.  I'm thinking maybe they did a bad job applying the thermal compound on the second GPU? Are there any major tricks to removing and re-applying the heatsink compound?  I have both generic "white paste' and silver based CPU paste to use, which would be better in this application?

Anyone ever had a bad thermal sensor on a GPU?  The back of the card measures the same temperature as a properly behaving 5970 with my IR thermometer.

Or, is it just time to return the card and call it a day?

Thanks for any advice,

How much is your time worth to you?

HD4890 = This *10

I am struggling with this problem, 5970's pull ~230W each when mining, what PSU are you using that will run 4x 5970's and the motherboard without issues?  I really need a better PSU solution!

Thanks,
