Wood won't ignite until a temp much higher than the card would have already fried at.  It's safe to use but it won't allow for airflow.

What works well - go to walmart or target and get the wire dishracks - they're coated with rubber - just make sure not to nick them.

A wire dish rack or other type coated rack is a great idea, I hadn't thought of that.  Cool
In reference to wood: Although I'm sure it is unlikely that a hunk of wood would ignite, I always side on the paranoid since I have had small brief fires in computers from components failing.

Just caught on FIRE.

You get what you pay for!

Picked up a better rework station and have done a bunch of 16MHz upgrades. It has been challenging to work with the tiny parts and I have learned a lot (with only minor casualties in the BE department).

Thanks to all the contributors in this thread that did all the testing and experimenting.
This has been a fun project.  Cool

Ah I was thinking of thin flat strip of wood. Thanks for the warning. Then wood and metal are both ruled out. I would love to build a crate rig like the one you pointed me to (thanks) but I just don't have the time now + my need to be operational is more urgent. Once I am operational, I want to take my time and build a proper rig.

If we are looking at rod shapes, can I use think plastic pipes used in plumbing? I can figure out a way to secure the rods to the case, what about the gpu to the pipes. Should I do that too?

Basically any plastic pipe, rod, or what-have-you that can be secured and will support the weight of the GPUs would work.

Zip ties or Velcro straps can secure the ends of the GPU at the bracket on one end (you can make a nut and bolt anchor using the bracket fastening holes if it suits your fancy).

Often times there is a small hole in the PCB that can be used on the other end but be careful as you don't want to stress the PCB. Depending on the cooling system the GPU has there may be other viable anchor points on the non-bracket end. You can also gently tie down the PCIE cables to the support and the wire tension will provide stability as well.

Of course this setup is not earthquake proof but should be jostle safe. I have two 7970s in a crate doing it this way.

I am getting riser cables so that I dont run my gpus on the motherboard.  I am using a cooler master case, a cheaper one than this image but this will serve nicely to explain.

I have placed the case in a sleeping position and not standing as it is shown here. I now have 12 inch risers for my 2 gpus (R9 280X). Until I build something custom to hold the gpus, I was thinking of placing a plank on the case and placing the gpus flat with the fans blowing upwards. Will that cause problems or can the gpus be placed like that.

If by 'plank' you are indicating a wood plank then I would not recommended that.

If 'plank' means a non-conductive, non-flammable substance in plank or rod shape then that should not be a problem. 3/4" PVC works nicely when secured so it does not roll. The GPUs are placed perpendicular to the support plank/rod.

Black box is case. Purple lines are support. Red boxes are GPUs.

If you have a plastic crate around, open air is my preference. (e.g. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=163306.0)

I have an unconfirmed payment from 11/7 and a negative balance with no double payment visible.

 Huh

On the Slush web site https://mining.bitcoin.cz/accounts/profile/ it says
" Quick updates

    08.11.2013
Some recent payouts didn't go thru bitcoin network because of unsatisfied transaction fees. We're finding a soluton and all payouts will be processed soon"

Hopefully they will fix this soon, or try to contact Slush support email or the Live Support.
In my case the double payments were not consecutive. looking at my wallet transactions, stats (I copy and keep my Slush stats) and the payout history I managed to figure it out more or less...

The account message changed
from: "Notice: The last payment to you was sent twice by a mistake. This has caused that your confirmed reward is temporarily below 0 BTC. We're sorry for the inconvenience."
to: "Notice: Some payments from 2013-11-08 were sent twice by a mistake. This has caused that your confirmed reward is temporarily below 0 BTC. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

The transaction from 11/7 confirmed at last. The double payment showed up about an hour ago.

The account message was incorrect and then premature in regard to my account.

Looks like things are making sense now but in any case it is a little bothersome.

I only have bad news.

Just caught on FIRE. The heating element went bonkers and the wand plastic ignited.

I do not take responsibility for that.

I do take responsibility of overheating the surface mount pad with a fine tipped iron while removing solder and causing the pad to come off.
Which I am pretty sure means I am farked.

Also I burned the nachos slightly.

My head hurts.  Do I read that the people who don't trust Roman with a check want him to stroll down the street with a fist full of cash in his pocket?

I'm more comfortable with the check and a wait.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

Seriously, hasn't ANYONE seen Dumb and Dumber?

Since bitfloor has a lawyer... tell me why this can't work:

Roman gives the lawyer the money with a list of people owed, and the lawyer contacts everyone with a settlement agreement. If they want their money, they sign the settlement, and he mails out checks... why is that so fucking hard?

My understanding is that Bitfloor has a physical check and so far no bank is willing to cash it.

If you read the audenx tumblr all this is explained (as well as it can be from a third party view).

I don't care if it loses money. I'm bored and just want to play on a 1.5ghz netbook to see how bad it really is. Is there any CPU mining software around that will run on Win XP?

cgminer 2.11.4 or earlier.  You should get 1 to 2 Mh/s out of it.

You might need to recompile it.  Read the Windows build readme file.

Assorted builds for various OS and cgminer versions:

Submit issues to Coinbase support using this form: http://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/emails/new

They are usually responsive within a couple hours.

And AudenX deserves steady applause for the effort!

AudenX deserves to be paid for the effort.  If/when I get my funds from Bitfloor, I will most certainly be making a contribution to AudenX.  I would hope that anyone else who has appreciated receiving his updates would consider doing the same.

Does anyone have a link to his announcement for this effort?

1: No (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Backup)
2: Yes (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Restore)

Don't take my word for it though.
Try it. Test it. Know it.
