Board CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware
Re: New AMD APUs... [AMD A8-Series]

Something I thought was interesting, and sorry for the necro-action . . . but i think this topic best fits my post .  ..

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--c8SVI3WFHk/UWdEgybLKfI/AAAAAAAAAKI/vRkhLd8h0ho/s1152/GUIMiner.jpg

I am mining two workers on the same GPU. Apparently there are two different types of hardware, other than the CPU on this APU. One is [0.0] Beaver creek. The other is [0.1] Turks. Typically when not using my desktop I get between 100-104.9 MH/s. Supposedly this APU has "dedicated graphics", in that the GPU part of the APU has a dedicated 1GB( GPUZ shows only 512MB) of memory. Something like a daughter card usable only by the on CPU graphics . . .

Anyhow when I run with the flag -f 0, I *can* get up to ~114.9MH/s, but the screen lags something horrible, and it just seems that accepted shares slows down considerably. Yeah I do not know what that is about, but if fact, I would have to say because of over stressing the GPU. You can see in the screenshot the APU does run pretty hot, but not hot enough to bother me.

Flags:

[0.0] -v -f 80 -w64 all processors set to affinity
[0.1] -v -f 60 -w64 all processors set to affinity.

Increasing the working set seems to have a detrimental effect, if anything. e.g. -w128, removing the vectors flag decreases performance by around 10% If I add another worker to either of the on APU devices, I can get an additional 4-5MH/s per, but heat does go up, and in fact the fan pretty much stays on high all the time. It seems I can only add two workers per device. Overclocking the CPU has little to no effect.

Anyway, if anyone would be so kind to quote or link this post to the post listed above I would be grateful.

EDIT:

Obviously the Image is edited. This has been edited only for sanitizing reasons only. e.g. do you really need to know my computer name, username, and user information for my workers . . . ?

I believe there was some form of ddos on mtgox and they didn't admit it directly.

They openly admitted to this two days ago to some online tech magazine. Sorry I do not remember exactly where I read this, but I did. This article also explained that these DDOS's for the last week or so are intentional towards the end goal of destabilizing the BTC. Seems to be working pretty good yeah ?

Re: 3x 7950 rig PCI problems

Since you have this motherboard:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme6/?cat=Specifications

You should have those slots:

- 2 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots (PCIE2/PCIE4: single at x16 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4) or dual at x8/x8 mode)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot (PCIE5: x4 mode)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot

From my perspective (having done PCIe signal quality measurements etc. already) any kind of extender cable are potentially trouble for both signal quality and power supply. Not being detected at boot time sounds a bit more like the former. But fortunately for bitcoin mining you don't need much bandwidth. So here is my suggestion:

Check in BIOS Setup (or rather UEFI Firmware Setup here) if you can set the PCIe mode to the slowest Gen1 speed. This should at least give you the highest chance of success, with no impact at all on mining speeds.

Exactly my thoughts. PCIE is not meant to truly be extended externally. So when putting extender cables on the cards, you're potently adding noise. Signal integrity is very important at even PCIE 3.0 1x speeds.

As for you power usage, I would not take anyone word on how much of a power supply you really need. Buy a KILL-A-WATT meter, plus in one card, power up the system full load, check power consumption, and compare it to idle. Multiply difference by 3x, and add ~20%.

Also so keep in mind most switching power supplies ( Computer/PC type ) operate most efficiently at 25%, 50% or 75% load. So with that in mind, when adding 20% dont be afraid to add a little more if it means matching efficient load statistics. Also for what it is worth, most PSUs are the most efficient at 50% load, but always check OEM specs before making that judgment call. As some do vary.

Re: Slush's pool not working correctly

Hi everybody,
I got bitcoin yesterday and I have been using Slush's pool. I understand it is a point method, but after a while the website just stops recognising my computers existence and it stops recording points and shares. However the client says it is still making many shares. Any help would be great.

Thanks very much.

I ran initially on slush's pool too, got to around $.37 US in BTC, and noticed the same thing. I since left, and joined BTCGuild, and havent looked back. Not saying anything nefarious is happening, just saying I wont put up with that sort of garbage, no matter what is going on.

Just my 2 cents . . .

I'm posting this as a response to this post:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=173557.20

Most of the posters are bemoaning the slump in price of bitcoin over the last day or so.

These posters are making more sense to me:

odolvlobo
Wekkel
BitBuster
Severian

I think people are missing the bigger picture i.e. the reason the bubble formed in the first place was due to the logically traceable consequences of central planning. Cyprus is a taste of things to come i.e. monetary panic. If governments - and their not-so-private stooges - can make up the rules as they go along... people will flee into what they perceive as more stable currency.... even though there are problems with that currency which are due to a globally monopolised monetary system.

Unlike governments, the free market learns from it's mistakes - even when they are not of its own doing.

Funny thing is though Cyprus was the tip of the so called iceberg. So with that in mind I think there will be more to follow. Who knows who is really next. But I think it is a given that more *will* follow.

What do I mean by this ? I mean that "we" will get to do this all over again, when the next economy collapses. So . . .buy low, sell high, and wait for it.

It does seem like it. I've seen mention of people donating BTC to others a couple times on these very forums for one thing or another. I think two of these cases were "rewards" for testing / investigating different things. One was to some fella who investigated which FGPA was in a BFL ( butterfly logic ) Jalapeno i think it was.

EDITED for typos.

Really, how was the tulip boom and bust traceable to central planning?

'Tulipmania' was the result of government meddling. The government passed laws leading to massive expansion of the money supply, which created the bubble.

Conspiracy theorists and libertarians sh*t me to tears.

Perhaps you should try pulling your head out sometime.

Funny thing this "government" concept eh ? We do not need them, they need us, yet they have all the power. Just goes to show how the masses truly are sheep.

You are a tool of the highest order.

Really ? Is that the best you can do ?

Yeah wow, toss out a hard to grasp concept ( I guess ? ) and suddenly the "smart people" start tossing 5 letter words, 8 word sentences at ya . . . I guess thinking for ones self truly is a rarity.

Re: ButterFly Labs SCAM OR NOT???
by

on 12/04/2013, 07:55:12 UTC
I hope not. I ordered 15 asic sc miners 8 and a half months ago. I had good experiences ordering fpga miners from them in the past also.

No personal experience, but I do know someone from another forum who has two what I think are FPGA ( jalpeno 4.5GH/s models ), he also posted a picture of the PCB for the 8 ASIC model the two jalapeno's paid for . . . Not sure where he got the picture, but there you have it.

One thing that does kind of nag me a little in the back of my head. Why would anyone make these to sell to others, when they could be used to make much more money mining coins ? Yeah something about that doesn't sit right with me, but that doesn't mean I think it is a scam. Just means I think it is odd.

Re: Holy Shit! Bitcoin is tanking!

every newbie to bitcoin has to realize that we take part in an experiment whose outcome lays in the future 5 to 10 years.
it's not about the quick buck.

What you describe has little to do with bitcoins, and everything to do with normal investment and non speculation commodity trading.

Really, it is common sense. As for the OP, silly person should have been buying at $77 per, and paying closer attention. But attempting to "daytrade" over the internet at this point with all the DDOS's happening is a recipe for suicide.

Fuck this, I'm cashing out and cutting my losses. I'd rather lose at this much than at $15.

If you have half a mind, you'd sell too.

SO i guess your philosophy is buy high, and sell low ?

Yeah, these network exploiters out there are loving your comments about now.

This is all pretty much common sense trading knowledge.

I think the most important idea to take away from this is, do not pay attention to fluctuations. Especially rapid ones. Any/all commodities fluctuate in price. ---> This is how dirt bag speculators make money. <--- personal opinion, one which I feel very strongly about. Anyway, this is not exactly 100% true, because speculators also rely on people like us, to sell with out paying attention. . . people mining bitcoins should probably pay attention more but I think we all know that will never happen. Sadly.

Also, for what it is worth. This machine can be underclocked down to around 400Mhz-533Mhz. Since the processor has no to little bearing on the Hash rate ( yes I have tested, but not underclocked yet ), it would be truly interesting to see what I could get away with power wise.

But again, we're 100% offgrid so it is moot . . . I did notice however that these APUS are selling on ebay used for ~$30 US, and sometimes less.

Are you even making money with the power the machine uses?

Would wonder as well. Thought the APU's would have lower power draw but just found out that isn't true...

You're kidding me right ? A laptop . . . peaks at 40W full CPU load . . . including monitor.

Either way, it is moot. We're 100% offgrid, e.g. Solar and wind power.
