Due to the lack of interest and engagement, I stop reporting what is happening in the Elastos environment.

If anyone agrees that Bitcoin should be the foundation for a safer, more inclusive and more powerful version of the Web, then feel free to follow the development of Elastos.

Re: How to reduce energy consumption and eliminate wasted work
by
zbig001
on 05/05/2022, 19:20:19 UTC
Thermodynamically, it hardly makes a difference whether the security budget of a given monetary network is spent directly on proof of work or on return on capital securing this network, for energy consumption will inevitably occur as the owners of capital begin to consume the profits.
So switching to PoS does not reduce energy consumption if at least a similar level of security is to be maintained (secure PoS is just obfuscated PoW).

Do you want to really save energy?
Work and earn less, in order to be able to spend less.

Otherwise you only contribute to shifting energy consumption between industries, depending on what you prefer to spend your income on.

Digital real estate is a new type of investment which includes virtual plots of land next to Snoop Dogg for just shy of half a million dollars, or virtual billboards that you can rent out to big brand advertisers to earn passive income. It is not possible that an oracle could be truly random and decentralized at the same time.

And the concerns raised in the comments seem to be right. If solving mathematical problems is profitable here, is PoUW not merged mining to some extent? Allowing consequently "zero cost attacks", or something very similar to zero cost attacks?

The Bitcoin protocol is not very well suited to the needs of merged mining. Much more than just the algo would have to be changed, and even then the current level of security is unlikely to be maintained.

Merged mining (the real one at least) can be and is a great solution, but for other coins with a different purpose than Bitcoin.

Re: Blockchain is 360GB and growing, can it be consolidated?
by

Paradoxically, pruning and validating only the current blocks may be sufficient for security, but only if it doesn't become too common.

It is better not to provoke the evolution of the protocol towards increasing scalability, which would not only threaten decentralization, but also security.
There can always be a bug that validators cannot detect and that will not be disclosed until a full chain audit by inquisitive, independent researchers.
As was the case with the Stellar coin once

From the publication "Blockchain: Blueprint For A New Economy" was bowdlerized a raft of information of various kinds, in part due to Mr. Feng's involvement. In the announcement there is a paragraph that fetes Feng's contributions to the world of blockchain but it just occurred to me that Feng's is puppet moved by an entity unseen and undetected acting upon everything from the shadows of worlds economical arena.

Do you have something rational to support this statement, or was it just slanderous gibberish?

Re: A Two-Round Proof of Work instead of PoW
by
zbig001
on 16/11/2021, 16:38:17 UTC
The energy saving comes from the fact that most of miners will spend a big part of their time on Round 1 that is not heavy-energy / CPU consuming. At least this is the target, the bet and the hope.

I'm afraid exactly that you might be right, and you might succeed  Smiley

The newly mined coins plus the transaction fees for the transactions included in the block have a certain value.
So it is obvious that the market will seek equilibrium and to channel the resources needed to mine with a similar market value (I assume that mining is still to be permissionless, and we will not create a miners clique or cabal where market law does not apply).

The precedents are not really optimistic...
Memory intensive mining algorithm like Scrypt can effectively reduce the energy intensity of computation. But then the mining equipment itself becomes the main investment of the miner, and the benefit to the environment is disputable due to increased e-waste production.

Where is the energy saving here, when the miner will have lower electricity bills, but there will be more miners?

And the statements that Bitcoin "waste" energy (and consequently imply that something needs to be done about it) haven't been debunked many times?
