the best way is to make your passwords as strong as possible, never ever use the same password (email, exchanges).
also be careful of phishing mails and a good antivirus softwares that could secure your information can help.

IMHO it is really hard to say an ICO is good or bad....
It would take a lot of reading, research and background checks for the ICO, the ICO's devs and core team.
Be careful with hypes, as 'too good to be true" type of promises always ends up to be some sort of a scam.
I say also that ICO will give you hefty % of profit if it turns out to be realistic, otherwise.........

The best thing to do is to HODL. or taking some cutting-lost measures will also be necessary.
One thing I learned about crypto is that you should have patience and sense of timing..

Short term or Long Term investment?
I say it depends on the coin's whitepaper and roadmap and the purpose of the coin.
If the WP and roadmap is being executed without delays it will be good for long term,
otherwise coins that are always into PnD are best for swing/day trades; short term.

Buying ICO will definitely give you more profit, but you should be very careful that it isnt a SCAM.
While buying later on exchange will give you not much profit (or even loss your investment) but the good thing is that it hit already an exchange and trading is LIVE..

ICO's might not be gaining much attentions for the next 5 years, because of the SCAM ICO's that has victimized many crypto traders (noobs).
