Thats the whole idea. Its not possible to use bitcoin as a currency without the lightning network. its too slow and the fees are way way too high.

That's the breakthrough Bitcoin really needed. It will be really difficult for altcoin supporters to sell their ideas after this, since fast transactions is what most of them say when asked about why their altcoin is superior.
