A quick easy fix is to simply clear out all the blockchain data etc.

Close your wallet.

Simply navigate to the Sterlingcoin folder in your C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\ directory and delete everything except the wallet.dat file.

We repeat, delete everything EXCEPT the wallet.dat file (do not delete the wallet.dat).

If you are not on version 1.4, update first and then open the wallet again and it will connect and sync.

I have experienced this problem with other coins.  I always recommend to backup the coin(Sterlingcoin in this case) directory before you start to ensure you have a complete roll-back point.
