With so many legitimate merchants accepting bitcoin it's not unreasonable to think that maybe, just maybe, legitimate use of bitcoin might outpace both. That would explain why the price skyrocketed when Silk Road was busted and everyone was predicting doom.

Back in the early days of Bitcoin illegit use was probably bigger than legitimate. That is totally not the case now, all of the remaining darknet markets combined aren't near as big as SR was back in its prime-time, and they all suck in comparison too, literally none of them have a fucking clue what they are doing at all. People who think that Bitcoin is only used for drugs/hitmen etc etc are idiots who will believe anything you tell them without researching it, so they're no loss to the cause.
