Of course, this can backfire too. Those who mined Dogecoin in the first few days after launch or Darkcoin back when it was worth pennies would have made a very nice return on their investment if they had simply held onto their coins.

You're probably thinking of either Rosetta@home or more likely, Folding@home. SETI@home is a BOINC project so you would be able to mine Gridcoin at the same time. For a list of BOINC projects, click here and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
