You could try the standalone version of the client:

http://bob.nem.ninja/

Download the file called "nis-ncc-0.6.25.zip" and unzip it to a folder in your hard drive (e.g. C:\NEM). Then open the folder and double click on runMon.bat. This should automatically open a browser window containing the wallet.

I'm curious about this too. From what I can see, it tends to stay between 100 and 150.

Now if I had to guess, I'd say that it's a measure of how many coins are harvesting at any given moment. Just like in the case with NXT, if 800,000 coins are forging then difficulty is high. If only 100,000 coins are forging, then difficulty is low and it would be easier to forge a block. Can anyone confirm?

I started runNCC.bat first. Then runNIS.bat afterwards.

The last step was to run runMON.bat and I was good to go!

Synchronizing now. And I can see a shield at my taskbar =)
