The lawyer knows that Alpha is a high-risk target; meaning they might NOT have any funds so the laywer will not work on a "fee out of the winnings" basis.

Of course you are entitled to your skepticism.

Maybe it's a good thing to go for an escrow here. Once the payments are there, you show "the crowd" and the escrow the contract/invoice with the sollicitor and maybe the escrow calls the lawyer for verification
