no luck. I was able to recover the original wallet.dat from the external drive but it is damaged and the wallet wont start (error message). Sigh.

You could try contacting http://www.walletrecoveryservices.com/ - they might be able to help you. They've been around for a long time. The wallet format is the same as Bitcoin 0.10.
